Basic myQ app control is currently free for compatible Chamberlain and LiftMaster garage-door openers: you can check door status, open or close the door remotely, and receive notifications without a standard consumer subscription. The app is not a free opener, though, and video storage, some vehicle integrations, and partner services can cost extra.
What you get for free
Chamberlain says owners of compatible Wi-Fi or “Powered by myQ” openers can connect to the myQ app without a recurring fee. Basic use generally includes checking whether the door is open or closed, remote opening and closing, and access or status notifications. Guest and co-owner access is also promoted in the app’s feature list, subject to device and feature availability.
This is the standard U.S. consumer garage-control use case. Compatibility, connectivity, and feature availability depend on the exact opener, hardware, region, and app setup. myQ’s terms reserve the right to establish license fees, so “currently free for basic control” is more accurate than “will always be free.”

Hardware is the key distinction: the software may be free, but the opener or compatible Smart Garage Control/Hub is not. A Chamberlain label alone does not guarantee that a particular opener has built-in Wi-Fi or works with a hub. Check the model using myQ’s setup and compatibility information before buying. A strong Wi-Fi signal in the garage is also required for reliable app control.

Camera viewing and video subscriptions
On the Smart Garage Camera, myQ describes live viewing as free. Storing recordings and reviewing past events are separate paid features; you do not need a video plan just to use basic garage-door control.
myQ’s video pricing is not one universal rate. Its Video Monitoring plans page lists Basic at $24.99 per year, Essential at $7.99 per month or $79.99 per year, and Ultra at $14.99 per month or $149.99 per year. The page describes different device coverage, event-history periods, and detection features by tier. Separately, the Smart Garage Camera product page lists 7-day storage at $3.99 per month or $39.99 per year, and 30-day storage at $9.99 per month or $99.99 per year.

Those price lists appear to cover different product or plan flows, so do not assume one applies to every camera or secure-view opener. Check the subscription offer shown for your device in the app or on its product page, and confirm the plan’s eligible devices, retention period, renewal terms, and included detection features before subscribing.
Vehicle and partner services are separate
A free myQ app does not mean every in-car myQ service is free. myQ Connected Garage is a separate vehicle integration, and pricing and eligibility depend on the automaker, model year, vehicle, and region.

- Tesla: myQ advertises a 30-day trial and a Smart Garage Control offer described as free hardware with a $0.99 handling charge, subject to the offer’s terms.
- Kia: the page describes a free-trial flow for compatible 2024–2026 U.S. vehicles but does not establish one universal long-term price.
These are examples, not a price promise for all vehicles. Verify the current offer and renewal terms on the page for your automaker. Likewise, Walmart+ InHome is a separate delivery service, not a required myQ fee; myQ lists a 30-day trial followed by $19.95 per month or $138 per year for the combined Walmart+ and InHome service. Availability and terms can vary.
myQ Community is another distinct product for apartments and managed properties, with shared-access and administrative features. Its plans do not determine whether a homeowner needs a subscription for ordinary Chamberlain garage control.

How to tell whether you need to pay
- Compatible opener, no camera or vehicle service: Basic app-based door control is currently presented as free. You still need compatible hardware and garage Wi-Fi.
- Older or non-connected opener: Check the exact model for Smart Garage Control/Hub compatibility. You may need to buy hardware, or the opener may not be supported.
- You want recorded footage: A video plan may be needed for event history or advanced detection. Live viewing on supported camera products is distinct from recording.
- You want in-car control or delivery access: Review the automaker or partner’s terms; these are not included automatically with basic app control.
Basic setup and common payment prompts
For the standard consumer setup, confirm built-in Wi-Fi/myQ support or hub compatibility, make sure the garage has a strong Wi-Fi signal, download the free app, sign in or create an account, and follow the prompts to add the opener or Smart Garage Control and pair its door sensor. Test both remote operation and status notifications. Chamberlain’s setup page provides the compatibility and setup path.

A prompt may be for video storage, a vehicle-connected service, a third-party partner, a community plan, hardware, or installation—not the basic garage-control function. A free trial is not the same as a permanent free plan: check its duration, payment-method requirement, automatic renewal, and the exact feature it covers.
If setup fails, confirm the exact opener model is supported, check garage Wi-Fi, and make sure the opener is not already linked to another myQ account. Follow the app’s prompts for the correct hub or door sensor rather than assuming every opener is added in the same way. If remote control works but recordings do not, that can be expected: door control and video history are separate services.
Bottom line for homeowners
If you already have a compatible Chamberlain or LiftMaster opener and only want app-based opening, closing, status checks, and notifications, you generally do not need a monthly subscription. You may pay for the compatible hardware or installation, and you will pay extra if you choose video history, certain vehicle integrations, or partner services. Confirm model compatibility and the specific price shown for your device or service before buying.
