Usually, a cracked modern LCD or LED television is not a radiation emergency or an immediate toxic-chemical hazard. However, it is damaged electrical equipment. The practical risks are cuts from broken glass, electric shock or fire if the impact damaged internal parts, further panel failure, liquid intrusion, unstable mounting, and—on some older LCD televisions—mercury-related disposal concerns.
Turn the TV off, unplug it from the wall, keep children and pets away, and do not press, clean, open, or move the damaged set unnecessarily.
What makes a cracked TV hazardous?
The risk depends on more than the crack itself. Check the entire television, including the cabinet, power cord, stand, wall mount, and the area around it.
- Glass and sharp edges: Broken fragments can cause cuts, especially when the screen is touched or the TV is moved.
- Electrical damage: An impact can damage wiring, circuit boards, or the power supply. Liquid entering through a crack or damaged cabinet can create shock or fire risks.
- Heat or fire: Smoke, sparking, a burning odor, unusual heat, popping, flickering, or repeated shutdowns are warning signs.
- Structural instability: A fall may have weakened the stand, wall mount, brackets, or cabinet even if the TV still displays an image.
- Possible mercury in older models: Some older LCD televisions use fluorescent CCFL backlights that may contain mercury. The EPA lists LCD screens and monitors among products that may contain mercury.
A crack with a normal picture is still mechanical damage. The TV may continue working electrically while the panel remains fragile and could deteriorate when pressed, moved, or exposed to heat.

What to do immediately
- Turn the television off.
- Unplug it from the wall outlet. Remote-control standby is not the same as disconnecting power. Manufacturer guidance from Samsung and Sony recommends disconnecting power before cleaning or service.
- Do not touch or press the cracked panel. Do not tap it, wipe it aggressively, or push loose sections back into place.
- Keep people and pets away. Restrict access if fragments or sharp edges are reachable.
- Inspect from a safe distance. Look for smoke, burning smells, heat, sparking, exposed wiring, liquid intrusion, a damaged cord, or an unstable mount.
- Do not open the rear cover. Internal components can retain hazardous voltage after the TV is unplugged. Samsung advises qualified assistance when repair safety is uncertain.
If the TV is wall-mounted or has fallen, do not move a large set alone. Secure the area and arrange safe removal. If there is smoke, sparking, burning odor, heat, liquid inside the cabinet, or cord damage, leave it unplugged and arrange professional service or electronic-waste handling.
Is the liquid inside an LCD screen dangerous?
People often see a black, purple, rainbow, or spreading “ink” mark and assume that a poisonous liquid is leaking. In many cases, these marks are damaged display layers, liquid-crystal displacement, or panel failure—not a pool of liquid released into the room. Samsung describes the LCD panel as the thin layer of liquid-crystal material used to form the image.
That does not justify touching or dismantling the panel. A cracked screen can contain unknown materials, coatings, adhesives, or residues, and the exact construction varies by model. Avoid skin and eye contact with any substance that has escaped, wash your hands after handling the television, and seek advice if exposure occurs.
Do not try to seal the crack with glue, tape, adhesive film, or a “liquid LCD repair” product. These methods cannot restore the panel and may press on the damaged layers, trap fragments, damage coatings, or create false confidence.

Does a cracked LCD or LED TV emit radiation?
A crack in a modern LCD or LED television is not considered an X-ray hazard. Modern flat-panel televisions do not use the CRT electron-beam and vacuum-tube display system associated with the historical television radiation concern. The FDA distinguishes modern LCD, LED, plasma, and similar displays from CRT receivers.
“Not a radiation hazard from the crack” does not mean the television is completely free of all electronic emissions. It means that radiation is not the ordinary safety concern here. Focus on sharp fragments, electrical damage, fire signs, liquid intrusion, mounting stability, and responsible disposal.
Can you keep using a cracked TV temporarily?
Using it may be physically possible in limited circumstances, but unplugging it and arranging service or disposal is the safer default. A risk-managed temporary choice is only reasonable when all of the following are true:

- The crack appears superficial and has no accessible sharp edges or loose fragments.
- The cabinet, stand or wall mount, and power cord are intact.
- There is no smoke, heat, burning odor, sparking, liquid intrusion, abnormal flickering, or repeated shutdown.
- The TV is stable and no one needs to touch the damaged area.
- Children and pets cannot reach it.
Stop using the TV and leave it unplugged if:
- Glass is loose, falling, or exposed.
- The crack reaches the edge or exposes internal layers.
- The panel is bulging, separating, or releasing unknown material.
- The cabinet, cord, stand, or wall mount is damaged.
- The picture flickers abnormally, the set overheats, sparks, smells burned, or repeatedly shuts off.
- Water or another liquid entered through the crack or cabinet.
- The television is accessible to a child or pet.

How to handle broken screen pieces
Prioritize isolation and collection rather than cosmetic cleaning.
- Wear cut-resistant work gloves and closed-toe shoes.
- Pick up larger pieces with cardboard or stiff paper.
- Use tape or a damp disposable cloth for small fragments.
- Place pieces in a rigid, closed container where practical.
- Do not rub the damaged panel with bare hands or compressed air.
- Do not spray water or cleaner onto the screen or cabinet.
Avoid vacuuming directly over a severely shattered older display until you know how it should be handled. The EPA advises against vacuuming broken mercury-containing fluorescent lamps because vacuuming can spread powder or vapor. That is a lamp-specific instruction, not a television-specific cleanup procedure, but it supports cautious handling when an older fluorescent-backlit LCD may have broken.
How to clean a damaged TV
Do not aggressively clean a cracked panel. Never spray cleaner or water directly onto the television, and do not press the screen while wiping. Avoid alcohol, acetone, ammonia, benzene, solvents, abrasive pads, paper towels, and metal objects. Water entering the set can create shock or fire risks, as LG explains in its TV-cleaning guidance.

What if the TV is old?
Identify the exact model and approximate manufacturing year before disposal. Newer flat-panel televisions commonly use LED backlighting, but age and the word “LCD” alone do not prove whether mercury is present. Some older LCD models use cold-cathode fluorescent lamps, or CCFLs, which may contain mercury.
Do not dismantle an old, severely shattered TV to investigate its backlight. Contact the manufacturer, your local household-hazardous-waste program, or an electronics recycler that accepts televisions. If mercury exposure or unknown residue is suspected, follow professional guidance rather than applying the EPA’s broken-CFL procedure as though it were a television-specific protocol.

- The TV is relatively new, premium, unusually large, or difficult to replace.
- An accidental-damage policy or extended protection plan may apply.
- The repair quote is clearly below the cost of a suitable replacement.
- The TV has specialized features, installation, or sentimental value.
Replacement is often more practical when:
- The television is older or midrange.
- The panel is shattered rather than lightly scratched.
- Panel, labor, transportation, and installation costs approach replacement cost.
- The impact also damaged the cabinet, mount, stand, or electronics.
Check the exact warranty and protection-plan terms before paying. Physical-impact damage is commonly excluded from a standard warranty, while accidental-damage coverage depends on the product, plan, deductible, exclusions, and claim window. LG directs customers with cracked or damaged screens to its retailer or repair channels; Samsung likewise presents professional repair and replacement as alternatives.

Do not attempt a DIY panel replacement unless you have the appropriate model-specific service documentation, tools, experience, and safe handling procedure. Fragile panel components and internal electrical hazards make this unsuitable for most homeowners.
How to dispose of a cracked TV
- Record the model number and approximate manufacturing year.
- Check the manufacturer’s recycling or service guidance.
- Contact your local solid-waste district or household-hazardous-waste program.
- Use an electronics recycler that accepts televisions and can handle displays that may contain mercury.
- Transport the set upright and protected from additional breakage.
- Do not dismantle the panel at home.
Do not automatically put a television in ordinary curbside trash. State and local requirements can be stricter than federal household rules; the EPA recommends checking local recycling and hazardous-waste channels. CRT televisions have separate concerns because they contain leaded glass; see the EPA’s CRT guidance if the set is an older tube-style model rather than an LCD television.
When to seek urgent help
Seek prompt medical advice for a deep cut, embedded glass, uncontrolled bleeding, signs of infection, or material that entered the eye. Flush an exposed eye with clean water and obtain medical advice. In the United States, contact Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 if someone may have been exposed to mercury or unknown residue; do not induce vomiting or use household chemicals on the skin. The number is also provided in the EPA’s mercury cleanup guidance.
For smoke, fire, active sparking, or an electrical incident, move away and contact emergency services as appropriate. Do not reconnect or open the TV.
