Yes: iOS 18 lets certain iPhones pair with and locally control compatible Thread smart-home accessories without a HomePod or Apple TV. But it does not turn the phone into a full-time home hub. Apple says a Thread-enabled home hub or compatible third-party Thread border router is still needed for automations, notifications and remote access.
What Apple changed in iOS 18
Apple’s current support guidance says an eligible iPhone can pair with Thread accessories when it runs iOS 18 or later. The capability was reported shortly after iOS 18 arrived in September 2024; Apple’s June announcement of Home updates had emphasized other features, including guest access, Home Key improvements, energy-use information and robot-vacuum support. Apple’s support article now spells out the Thread requirements.
The change is narrower than saying an iPhone has become a Thread border router. Apple describes the phone as a Thread-enabled device that can communicate directly with supported accessories. A border router has a different job: it routes traffic between a Thread mesh and Wi-Fi or Ethernet, helping the mesh remain connected to the rest of the home network. Apple’s Thread documentation describes that role.

Which iPhones are eligible?
Apple lists the iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max and later models as Thread-enabled. The phone must be running iOS 18 or later. That does not mean every iPhone that can install iOS 18 has Thread hardware; use Apple’s model list rather than the iOS version alone to check eligibility.

Thread, Matter and Apple Home are different things
- Thread is a low-power mesh networking protocol for connected devices.
- Matter is an interoperability standard for smart-home devices. It can operate over Thread, Wi-Fi or Ethernet.
- Apple Home is Apple’s smart-home ecosystem and control layer, including the Home app and Siri.
- A Thread border router connects a Thread network to Wi-Fi or Ethernet and provides persistent network infrastructure.
A Matter logo by itself does not tell you which network transport a product uses. Check whether the exact model is Matter-over-Thread or Matter-over-Wi-Fi, and confirm that it supports Apple Home. A Thread radio alone does not guarantee that an accessory can be commissioned or controlled in Apple Home.
Apple supported Matter before iOS 18: its Matter documentation covers support beginning with iOS 16.1. iOS 18’s relevant change is that supported iPhones can use their Thread capability for direct accessory setup and local management.
What works without a home hub?
An eligible iPhone can pair with a supported Thread accessory and control it locally while the phone is available. That can be useful for a temporary setup or a small installation where you do not need an always-on home system. It does not provide the full set of services associated with a home hub.

In Apple’s setup, the eligible iPhone is not a substitute for persistent household infrastructure. If you need an accessory to remain reachable when your phone leaves, or want automations, notifications or remote control, add a supported home hub or compatible third-party Thread border router.
Which Apple devices can provide Thread infrastructure?
Apple lists these Thread-enabled home hubs:
- Apple TV 4K (2nd generation)
- Apple TV 4K (3rd generation, Wi-Fi + Ethernet)
- HomePod (2nd generation)
- HomePod mini
Not every Apple TV has Thread. Check the model and connection type before buying one for this purpose. Apple also says a compatible third-party Thread border router may work, but compatibility depends on the accessory, Apple Home or Matter support, and the manufacturer’s implementation. How to pair a compatible accessory
- Check the exact accessory. Confirm that it uses Thread and supports Apple Home or Matter. Do not assume every Thread device works with Apple Home.
- Update its firmware. Use the manufacturer’s app to check for updates. Apple notes that battery-powered accessories may need a firmware update to work with iOS 18.
- Check the iPhone. Use an iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max or later eligible model with iOS 18 or later, and turn on Bluetooth.
- Start setup in Home. Open the Home app, choose to add an accessory and scan the Apple Home or Matter setup code when prompted.
- Follow the accessory’s commissioning prompts. The specific flow can vary. Apple says iOS can use the setup code to provision a Matter accessory onto the appropriate network, including Wi-Fi or Thread.
- Test local control. Try controlling the accessory from the iPhone while nearby. If you need automations, notifications or remote access, plan on adding a home hub or compatible border router.
For Matter accessories, Apple also provides management under Settings → General → Matter Accessories. The available options can include reviewing accessories and removing pairings; reset options depend on the accessory and workflow. Apple’s Matter setup guidance explains commissioning and control through Apple Home.

“Thread Border Router Required” or “Needs Thread Network”
Check that the phone is an eligible Thread-enabled model, the accessory supports Apple Home or Matter, and its firmware is current. Some accessories or setups require a persistent Thread network. If direct pairing is not available, use a supported home hub or compatible third-party border router. Also check that the iPhone is signed in to the Apple Account associated with the Home.
A battery-powered accessory will not pair
Check the manufacturer’s app for a firmware update. Apple specifically notes that some battery-powered devices may need one for iOS 18 compatibility.
The accessory pairs but remote control does not work
This is expected if you have only the iPhone-based local setup. Add a supported Thread-enabled home hub or compatible border router for the persistent home services Apple identifies, including remote access, notifications and automations.
An existing hub is present, but the accessory is unreachable
Apple’s troubleshooting suggestions include restarting the home hub, confirming you are using a device signed in to the Apple Account that set up the Home, and checking Wi-Fi connectivity and interference. If an Apple TV is connected by Ethernet, Apple suggests temporarily connecting it to the same Wi-Fi network as the iPhone while troubleshooting. You can also power-cycle Thread accessories and check their status in the manufacturer’s app. Treat resetting network settings as a later step, and check whether a VPN or third-party security software is interfering. Should you rely on the iPhone or add a hub?
Rely on the iPhone alone if you have an eligible model and want occasional, local control or need to set up an accessory without buying a hub immediately. The trade-off is that control depends on the phone being available, and it does not replace the home services that require persistent infrastructure.

Add a HomePod mini, supported Apple TV or compatible border router if you want automations, notifications, remote access, access that does not depend on your phone being home, or an always-on Thread network. A HomePod mini is one Apple option; a supported Apple TV may suit a household that also wants a streaming device. Check compatibility before purchasing: Thread support varies by Apple TV generation and configuration.
Direct phone-to-accessory communication may avoid a border-router path in some local-control situations, but that does not guarantee a faster response. Performance depends on the accessory, firmware, signal and network conditions.
Bottom line
iOS 18 makes Thread setup and local control more convenient for owners of eligible iPhones, but it is a limited, phone-dependent option—not a replacement for a home hub. Confirm the iPhone model, accessory compatibility and firmware first. Choose persistent Thread infrastructure if your home needs automations, notifications or remote access.
