1X’s NEO is a real humanoid home robot with pre-orders open, but it is not an ordinary appliance shipping to everyone today. 1X says U.S. deliveries are planned to begin in 2026. The listed options are $20,000 for Early Access ownership or $499 per month for a subscription, with a $200 refundable deposit shown on the order page. Early units are expected to have basic autonomy, and unfamiliar or complex tasks may require a scheduled remote 1X Expert. NEO is a significant attempt to bring a general-purpose robot into homes—not yet a proven, fully autonomous housekeeper.
What is the 1X NEO home robot?
NEO is 1X Technologies’ consumer-oriented humanoid robot, designed to move around a home and manipulate objects using spaces and tools built for people. It is intended to help with domestic tasks rather than operate as an industrial robot in a controlled factory. That makes the challenge unusually broad: homes differ in layout, lighting, clutter, flooring, furniture, pets, and daily routines.
The commercial NEO follows earlier development generations. NEO Beta was a home-focused research prototype announced in 2024; NEO Gamma, introduced in February 2025, was another development generation aimed at improving walking, manipulation, reliability, and safety. The NEO announced on October 28, 2025, is 1X’s commercial pre-order product, not simply an invitation to view a prototype. That distinction does not mean its launch capabilities are already mature. What is NEO expected to do?
1X presents NEO as a mobile household assistant that can follow instructions, perform scheduled chores, and learn tasks for later repetition. Its public examples include moving through rooms, opening doors, carrying objects, putting away dishes, and cleaning areas such as kitchens, bedrooms, and bathrooms. The product page describes giving NEO a chore list and scheduling when it should work. These are intended uses and company-presented capabilities, not a guarantee that each early unit will complete every task autonomously in every home. (1X NEO product page.)

Cooking is not established as a guaranteed launch capability in the available product information. Nor should a general household-assistance pitch be read as evidence that NEO can safely handle knives, hot cookware, boiling liquids, childcare, medical care, or unsupervised pet care. Those tasks carry risks and require specific capabilities and safety evidence.
How autonomous is NEO at launch?
“Autonomous” can describe very different abilities: moving without a person beside the robot, completing a familiar task without step-by-step control, or handling a new situation safely and recovering from mistakes. 1X’s early-access offer points to basic or foundational autonomy at delivery, with capabilities expected to improve. It does not establish that NEO can independently understand and complete arbitrary household work from day one.
When NEO needs help
For chores it does not know or finds complex, 1X describes a scheduled Expert Mode in which a 1X Expert remotely guides or supervises the robot. The intended pattern is that NEO performs tasks it already knows, and an expert may help it handle an unfamiliar task that it can then learn to repeat. This makes early NEO a hybrid system: autonomous in some contexts, with a human in the loop for others. The company’s pre-order material says the robot’s ear rings change color while an Expert Operator is active and that real-world task data helps refine the system. Details such as appointment availability, which tasks qualify, and what happens if a session is interrupted should be checked against current terms and the live FAQ. How it learns
1X says NEO uses its Redwood AI model and is designed to learn and repeat tasks. The company’s development approach has included remote-operated robot data, real-world data, simulation, imitation learning, reinforcement learning, and onboard computing. In a March 2025 collaboration with NVIDIA, 1X showed a dish-loading autonomy demonstration using a continuous 5Hz vision-action loop. A demonstration shows a particular task under particular conditions; it is not a general benchmark of home reliability. (1X order page; 1X and NVIDIA collaboration.)

Lift, carry capacity, and arm payload are different measures and should not be treated as interchangeable. In particular, a listed maximum lift does not establish that it is safe for NEO to lift a person or a heavy object in a domestic setting. 1X lists four hours of runtime and says quick charging provides about six minutes of charging per hour of runtime. Actual operating time will depend on movement, manipulation, idle time, connectivity, and the mix of chores. The order page also lists head injury criterion below 250, 95% backdrivability, IP68 for the hands, and IP44 for the body; those figures need their technical context and do not mean the whole robot is risk-free or waterproof. Why make a home robot humanoid?
A human-shaped machine can potentially use existing household infrastructure: stairs, door handles, counters, shelves, cabinets, and appliances. It does not require a home to be redesigned around a single specialized machine. That is the attraction of a general-purpose humanoid.
The trade-off is that bipedal movement and human-scale manipulation are difficult. A robot must balance, navigate around people, cope with thresholds and uneven floors, and avoid falls while handling objects. A wheeled cleaner may be simpler and more effective for floor cleaning alone; NEO’s proposition is broader physical reach, not proof that a humanoid is the best tool for every household job.
Safety, privacy, and household trust
Physical safety
1X describes NEO’s design as including a soft body, a three-dimensional lattice polymer structure, tendon-driven actuators, low-inertia tendon drives, mechanical compliance, and a no-pinching-joint approach. These are design measures, not a blanket safety certification for every home or situation. The pre-order material tells users to follow safety instructions and remain attentive, especially around children, vulnerable people, and pets. NEO should not be treated as an autonomous babysitter, nurse, or pet-care replacement. (1X pre-order information.)

Before relying on NEO around other people, buyers need clear product guidance on emergency stops, fall recovery, stairs and slopes, detection of people and animals, child commands, safe operating areas, collisions, and handling loads near people. The public information cited here does not establish universal performance limits for those situations.
Remote access and data
Expert Mode creates a privacy boundary as well as a way to help NEO with a task: a remote operator may need to perceive the home through the robot’s sensors and influence its actions. Before enabling it, a household should understand whether experts can connect only during a scheduled, owner-authorized session; what audio, video, or other sensor data is recorded or retained; where it is processed; whether data sharing can be limited; and how visitors are informed. Do not assume an answer based on a promotional description—review the current FAQ and terms for the exact policy. (1X order page and FAQ; 1X legal terms.)
Connectivity and the home environment
NEO lists Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and 5G, but that does not show which features work offline, whether 5G service is included, or exactly how the robot behaves when a connection fails. Those details matter if Expert Mode or cloud services are needed. Likewise, the listed water-protection ratings do not establish that the robot can safely work around steam, cleaning chemicals, hot surfaces, or wet floors.

Clutter, loose cables, toys, transparent glass, spills, fragile objects, narrow passages, and items hidden beneath other objects are common in homes and can complicate perception and manipulation. A public demonstration or a task that works in one layout cannot establish reliable performance across all household conditions. The product information also does not establish universal limits for stair geometry, floor surfaces, or thresholds.

At $499 monthly, the subscription arithmetic is $5,988 per year and $17,964 over three years, before taxes, fees, or other terms. That total is below the $20,000 ownership price, but the offers are not automatically equivalent: ownership includes stated warranty and support benefits, while subscription cancellation, damage, repair, service, and end-of-term conditions need to be reviewed.
1X says U.S. deliveries are planned to begin in 2026, with other markets expected later. A pre-order is not the same as immediate retail stock or a guaranteed delivery date. 1X also says its Hayward factory has capacity for up to 10,000 NEOs annually and that 10,000 units of production capacity were booked in five days; capacity and bookings do not prove how many robots have shipped to customers. Who should consider NEO, and who should wait?
It may suit an early adopter who
- Can afford the commitment without needing an immediate household return on investment.
- Is comfortable with an early-access product whose abilities may develop over time.
- Is interested in participating in the deployment of embodied AI and accepts that remote expert assistance may be part of the experience.
- Has checked household layout, connectivity, privacy expectations, and safety needs against the current product terms.
Waiting is more sensible if you need
- Reliable, independently demonstrated autonomous completion of specific chores now.
- A mature repair, replacement, and service program with clearly understood costs.
- Confirmed privacy controls and a preference to avoid remote human involvement.
- Evidence that the robot is appropriate for unsupervised use around children, pets, or vulnerable residents.
- Immediate availability, international delivery, offline operation, or a predictable return on investment.
For a narrower need, a specialized tool may be a better fit: robot vacuums and mops focus on floors, smart-home assistants handle information and device control, and human cleaning or care services can adapt to tasks in ways a developing robot may not. These are functional alternatives, not direct equivalents to NEO’s intended general-purpose role.
