IKEA’s new smart-home devices can cost about $10, but a low sticker price does not guarantee a simple setup. Many newer products use Matter over Thread, which still depends on a compatible controller, a Thread Border Router and a healthy home network. IKEA’s affordable hardware and cross-platform ambitions are real; the gap is between technical compatibility and the plug-and-play experience many buyers expect.
IKEA wants smart features to feel like part of the home
IKEA is not just selling connected bulbs. Its smart-home range spans lighting, sensors, plugs, remotes, blinds, speakers, air purifiers and controls for scenes and routines. The ambition is to make useful smart features affordable and ordinary enough to add to a room alongside other furnishings. IKEA has described Matter as central to broadening access to smart homes, and says its current range includes 21 Matter-enabled devices. IKEA’s Matter guide and system setup guide lay out that approach.
The appeal is easy to see: a motion sensor can trigger a light, a remote gives family members physical control, and scenes or schedules can reduce the need to open an app. The difficulty is that a smart home is not one product. It is a chain of devices, wireless networks, controllers, apps and integrations—and every link has to cooperate.
Matter is a common language, not a magic hub
Several terms help explain why a Matter label does not mean “no setup required.”

Matter can make cross-platform control easier, but it does not determine whether a device uses Wi-Fi or Thread, supply a controller or Border Router, guarantee that every platform exposes every feature, or fix a router that blocks local discovery. The standard addresses interoperability at one layer. The actual experience still depends on the device, its firmware, the controller and the home network.
Many of IKEA’s newer devices use Matter over Thread. A buyer therefore needs a working Thread Border Router as well as a compatible Matter controller. DIRIGERA includes both relevant hub functions, but some households may already have suitable Apple, Google or Amazon equipment. The exact capabilities depend on the device and setup; do not assume that every hub supports every IKEA product or feature. Why a $10 device can become a bigger purchase
On IKEA’s U.S. site, the TIMMERFLOTTE temperature and humidity sensor and MYGGSPRAY motion sensor were listed at $9.99 each; the DIRIGERA hub was $119.99. Other examples included a BILRESA remote kit at $17.99, a KAJPLATS E26 bulb pack at $12.99, a GRILLPLATS smart plug with remote at $14.99 and a TOFSMYGGA smart plug at $17.99. These are U.S. prices observed in the research materials and can change; check the current IKEA smart-home catalog and DIRIGERA listing before buying.
If you already own a compatible Matter controller and Thread Border Router, a single inexpensive device may be a sensible trial. If you do not, the real starting cost could include a hub—or compatible equipment you already own. DIRIGERA is easier to justify when you plan to build an IKEA-centered setup, want IKEA’s app and automations, or need to keep older TRÅDFRI products. It is harder to justify for one sensor if another compatible setup is already in place.
There is no universal extra-cost figure: it depends on your existing equipment and the product you choose. The useful question is not simply “How much is this sensor?” but “What controller and network will run it, what features will I get there, and do I need to buy anything else?”
What DIRIGERA adds—and what it does not
DIRIGERA connects to a router with the supplied cable and requires a Wi-Fi network for the broader setup. It is designed to bring IKEA devices together in the IKEA Home smart app, support Matter functions and connect with voice platforms including Apple Home, Google Home and Amazon Alexa. IKEA lists app requirements of iOS 16.4 or later and Android 10 or later on its DIRIGERA product page.
You do not always need DIRIGERA to use an IKEA Matter device. IKEA says Matter products can be set up with a compatible Matter controller, and Thread products also need an appropriate Thread Border Router. Skipping DIRIGERA may mean fewer purchases and one less hub, but also more reliance on the features and setup flow of Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa or another platform. Some capabilities available in IKEA’s app may not appear in exactly the same way elsewhere.

For a mostly IKEA household, the hub’s value is broader than pairing one new sensor: it can provide a central IKEA interface and help bring supported older devices into a newer Matter-based setup. For a buyer who wants advanced automation across many brands, a dedicated multi-brand controller may be a better fit—but usually adds its own cost and complexity.
The old IKEA system and the new one are not identical
Many older TRÅDFRI products use Zigbee, while many newer IKEA products use Matter over Thread. Those are different technologies with different pairing and network behavior. IKEA says DIRIGERA can connect supported older Zigbee-based products and bridge them into Matter, which can save existing owners from replacing everything at once. That backwards-compatibility story is useful, but it also makes the range harder to explain. Two IKEA products that look like part of the same system may use different protocols and have different setup requirements. An older Zigbee bulb working reliably through DIRIGERA does not prove that a new Thread sensor will behave identically, or vice versa.
Why some new devices have been frustrating
Reports about IKEA’s newer Matter-over-Thread devices describe failed onboarding, products that pair but later go offline, and confusion over which hub or platform is required. Tom’s Guide reported connection problems with newer bulbs, plugs, programmable buttons and sensors, while also noting that some installations worked without trouble. That variation matters: these reports are evidence of inconsistent experiences, not proof that every IKEA Matter device is defective.
IKEA has continued to update its hub software. T3 reported that DIRIGERA version 2.934.0, released in March 2026, targeted Matter onboarding stability and a BILRESA remote issue. That shows the software is evolving; it does not establish that the update fixed every reported problem. T3’s report on the update describes its stated aims.
It is too simple to blame either IKEA or Matter alone. A failure can originate in the device or its pairing mode, Matter commissioning, a Thread mesh, the controller, the IKEA or third-party app, or the router and local network. IPv6, multicast discovery, mDNS, guest-network isolation and segmented networks can all matter in some setups. A generic error message may not reveal which layer is responsible. Differences in homes and controller combinations help explain why one buyer reports a smooth setup while another cannot keep a device online.
How to decide whether to buy now
- You already have compatible Matter and Thread equipment: A single IKEA device can be a relatively low-cost test. Check that your controller supports the product category and features you want, then follow its setup path.
- You have older TRÅDFRI devices: DIRIGERA may be worthwhile as a way to keep supported Zigbee products while expanding into newer devices. Confirm compatibility for your specific products before purchasing.
- You are building a mostly IKEA setup: The hub is more compelling when you want multiple IKEA devices, the IKEA app, scenes and a central place to manage them.
- You want one cheap sensor and no troubleshooting: The sensor price may understate the cost and effort. If you lack the required controller and Border Router, consider a device designed for equipment you already own—or wait until IKEA’s requirements and your preferred platform are clear.
- You want complex, multi-brand automation: Compare the controller and automation tools you need, not just device prices. IKEA can provide affordable endpoints, but it may not be the ideal center for every advanced system.
- Your network is segmented, unreliable or tightly isolated: Setup can be more sensitive. Check whether your router allows the local discovery and communication required by your chosen setup before adding devices.
Pairing and connection checks
For a new Matter device, IKEA’s documented path is to put the device into pairing mode, open IKEA Home smart or a supported platform app, and scan the Matter QR code. If scanning fails, use the 11-digit numeric Matter code printed on the device or packaging. Add it to a room and then configure the controls or automation available in that platform. If setup fails or a device drops offline, work through the layers rather than repeatedly resetting it:

- Update the IKEA Home smart app, DIRIGERA firmware and the app or controller you intend to use.
- Confirm that a Matter controller is active. For a Thread device, confirm that a Thread Border Router is active too.
- Keep the phone, device and controller on the same local network during commissioning. Avoid guest Wi-Fi or client isolation unless you know the network permits the discovery traffic needed by the setup.
- Reboot the controller and router before repeatedly factory-resetting the device.
- If the product was previously commissioned in another Matter ecosystem, follow the manufacturer’s removal or reset instructions before trying again.
- Use the numeric Matter code if the camera cannot scan the QR code.
- If it pairs but later goes offline, check Thread coverage and controller status as well as the general network connection; they are different parts of the chain.
These checks cannot diagnose every router or firmware issue. If they do not help, consult IKEA or the platform maker’s support guidance before assuming the device is faulty.
Support and ownership after setup
IKEA’s published policy says DIRIGERA and TRÅDFRI hubs receive at least three years of support after purchase, and IKEA smart products receive at least five years of support after purchase when paired with DIRIGERA or TRÅDFRI. IKEA also says products may continue to work locally after the formal support period, while future app, cloud and compatibility support is not guaranteed. Those are stated minimum support commitments, not promises of perfect operation or indefinite compatibility with every third-party platform. Read IKEA’s support policy for the full terms.
That distinction matters for long-term ownership. Local control can outlast formal software support, but the experience may change if apps, integrations or connected services change. Matter can reduce dependence on a single brand for compatible functions, but it cannot guarantee that every advanced feature will be preserved across every platform.
The real problem is the gap between compatible and simple
IKEA has made a convincing case that smart-home hardware can be affordable and approachable. It has also made a credible effort to support multiple platforms and retain older products. What it has not yet eliminated is the consumer’s need to understand which radio network, controller, border router and app combination a particular device requires.
That is why IKEA’s smart home is not simply “not working.” Some setups work; others have encountered real onboarding and stability problems, and software updates show the system is still being refined. The bigger shortfall is that a promise of universal compatibility can still lead a buyer into a surprisingly technical setup. IKEA has made the devices cheaper. Making the whole system feel as simple as buying a lamp remains the harder job.
