Short answer: IKEA’s newer Matter-over-Thread smart devices can work without the DIRIGERA hub, but “any Thread hub” is too broad. You need a compatible Matter controller, a Thread Border Router and support for the particular device in your chosen smart-home system. DIRIGERA remains useful for older IKEA devices and for using the IKEA Home Smart app.
What IKEA announced
IKEA announced a range of 21 Matter-enabled smart-home products, spanning lighting, sensors, plugs and remotes. Examples include the TIMMERFLOTTE temperature and humidity sensor, MYGGBETT door/window sensor, MYGGSPRAY motion sensor, KLIPPBOK leak sensor, ALPSTUGA air-quality sensor, KAJPLATS bulbs, GRILLPLATS and TOFSMYGGA smart plugs, and BILRESA controls. The announcement dates to November 2025; product names, availability and stock vary by country, so check your local IKEA site. IKEA’s announcement describes the wider range.
For many of these devices, the relevant combination is Matter over Thread. That makes them suitable for compatible third-party smart-home systems, rather than locking them exclusively to IKEA. IKEA says the new Matter devices do not require DIRIGERA. That does not mean they can connect to literally any device marketed as a Thread hub.
Matter, Thread and the two hub jobs

One product may perform more than one of these jobs, but a Thread Border Router is not automatically a Matter controller. A phone can help with setup without being the always-on controller or providing the Thread network. The practical test is whether your exact hub or ecosystem supports Matter over Thread and the device category you want to add.

When you can skip DIRIGERA
You can usually skip it if you already have a compatible Matter controller and Thread Border Router, your platform supports the IKEA product type, and you are happy managing the device in that platform’s app. IKEA lists Apple Home, Google Home, Amazon Alexa, Homey and Samsung-related systems among compatible ecosystems. Its guide gives examples such as a HomePod or Apple TV for Apple Home, Google Nest devices and Amazon Echo devices. This is not a promise that every model in those product families—or every feature—will work. Check the exact model, software and device-category support in your ecosystem.
IKEA’s Matter guide says DIRIGERA is not required for its new Matter devices. However, direct pairing to Apple Home, Google Home or another Matter platform is different from adding a device to the IKEA Home Smart app. For that IKEA-centered experience, DIRIGERA is the recommended route.

- Exact hub model: Brand name or Thread capability alone is not enough. Confirm that the hardware supplies a Thread Border Router and works as a Matter controller in your chosen ecosystem.
- Device category: Matter support does not guarantee that a platform exposes every type of sensor, control or feature identically.
- Network: Thread devices do not normally join Wi-Fi directly. They use Thread; the border router and controller connect them to the home network. Check that IPv6 is enabled and working on your router, and that local-network isolation or VLAN rules are not blocking setup or Matter traffic. These are useful troubleshooting checks, not a claim that every IKEA installation has an IPv6 problem.
- App and firmware: Check the current software requirements for your controller and IKEA product. Firmware update paths may differ when a device is paired directly with another ecosystem rather than through DIRIGERA.
- Batteries and total cost: Some inexpensive sensors need separately purchased batteries. IKEA recommends two AAA rechargeable batteries for TIMMERFLOTTE, and its page says batteries are sold separately.
- Local availability: The 21-product announcement does not mean every item is stocked in every country at the same time.
How to set one up
- Power the device or install its batteries, then put it into pairing mode if needed.
- Open the app for the Matter ecosystem you intend to use and start adding a device.
- Scan the Matter QR code. If scanning fails, IKEA says you can enter the 11-digit numeric Matter code printed on the product or packaging.
- Assign the device to a room and configure any supported automations.
- If you want it in another Matter ecosystem too, use that platform’s multi-admin process where supported. Multi-admin does not guarantee identical controls or features in every app.
Setup can require more than a scan. Third-party reporting described unclear Thread Border Router requirements and cases where IKEA Matter-over-Thread devices took multiple attempts to commission. IKEA has not published a complete official list of alternative hubs, so verify your hardware rather than assuming a generic Thread router is sufficient. See TechRadar’s report on hub requirements.

If pairing or connectivity fails
- Confirm that the Thread Border Router is powered, online and within useful range of the device.
- Check that the Matter controller is online and that the phone and controller are on the same home network during setup.
- Temporarily rule out guest-network isolation or VLAN rules that prevent local device discovery.
- Confirm IPv6 is enabled and functioning on the router.
- Move the device closer to the border router for commissioning, then restart the controller and router if needed.
- Update the smart-home app, controller firmware and IKEA device firmware where the chosen system allows.
- If the device was already commissioned to another ecosystem, check that platform’s Matter sharing or multi-admin steps. Factory-reset and recommission only after checking the network and existing pairing.
A March 2026 report said DIRIGERA software version 2.934.0 improved Matter onboarding stability, with updates delivered through the IKEA Home Smart app and rollout timing varying. Because hub software changes, check IKEA’s current app or support information rather than treating that version as current indefinitely. T3 reported on that update.
Does the price still make sense?
If you already own compatible Matter and Thread hardware, the device price is the main purchase cost, plus any batteries the product needs. If you do not have the required infrastructure, the hub can change the calculation: IKEA’s US DIRIGERA page listed it at $119.99 when checked on August 18, 2026. That is far more than a low-cost sensor, so buying DIRIGERA just for one inexpensive device may not make sense. Prices and stock change; check your country’s IKEA listing.

DIRIGERA is more compelling if you are also integrating older IKEA Zigbee products or want the IKEA app, scenes, routines and device management. For a single product, first check whether hardware you already own can provide both required functions. Avoid buying a generic Thread router without confirming its Matter-controller role and the platform’s support for the specific IKEA device.

They are a reasonable fit for people already invested in a compatible Matter ecosystem, IKEA households with DIRIGERA, and budget-conscious buyers comfortable checking specifications and troubleshooting commissioning. Consider another product or ecosystem if you need a documented, tightly controlled setup, extensive platform-specific automation, or a setup that cannot tolerate occasional connection problems. Independent coverage has found the new devices inexpensive and capable, while also noting separately purchased batteries and reports of connectivity problems; those reports do not establish that every installation will have trouble. Home Assistant users should be especially careful not to treat “Matter over Thread” as a plug-and-play guarantee: the experience can depend on the Matter Server version, Thread Border Router, IPv6 setup and other hardware choices. Confirm the current support for your exact setup before purchase. More broadly, Matter improves interoperability, but it does not ensure every ecosystem exposes the same controls, supports the same automations or handles commissioning identically.
