IKEA’s BILRESA two-button Matter remote is available in the U.S. for $6.99, not exactly $6, with two AAA batteries sold separately. It can pair directly with compatible IKEA smart products or join a Matter smart-home system—but app-based use requires the right controller and, because BILRESA uses Thread, a Thread Border Router. The bargain is most compelling if you already have that equipment.
What you get for $6.99
The white BILRESA remote control (article number 806.178.76) has two physical buttons, runs on two AAA HR03 batteries, and communicates using Matter over Thread. IKEA says one remote can control up to 10 IKEA smart products when paired directly. Batteries are not included; IKEA recommends its LADDA rechargeable AAA batteries.

The buttons are not limited to one fixed action. Depending on the connected products and smart-home platform, a short press, double press, or long press can trigger different actions. IKEA’s lighting examples include switching lights on or off, changing color, and dimming. In a broader Matter setup, you may be able to assign button events to a scene or automation.

Do not assume every app exposes every press pattern. Support for remote-button events and automations varies by controller, app, software version, and device. IKEA lists Amazon, Apple, Google, Homey, and Samsung ecosystems as examples of compatible Matter platforms, but that is not a promise of identical controls everywhere.
Three ways to set it up
1. Pair it directly with an IKEA smart product
This is the simplest option if you only want a physical control for compatible IKEA products and do not need app-based smart-home features. IKEA’s manual says direct pairing supports up to 10 IKEA smart products per remote.
- Insert two AAA batteries.
- Place the remote within 5 cm of the IKEA product you want to pair.
- Quickly press the remote’s system button four times. This opens a pairing window of about 30 seconds.
- Wait for the LED to blink twice to indicate connection.
This direct pairing is different from adding the remote to a Matter ecosystem: it uses the nearby IKEA product and a short pairing window, rather than commissioning through a home app.
2. Use IKEA Home smart with DIRIGERA
To use BILRESA in IKEA’s Home smart app, IKEA’s manual requires a DIRIGERA hub and the IKEA Home smart app. DIRIGERA is listed at $119.99 in the U.S. It can also help bring older TRÅDFRI/Zigbee products together with newer Matter devices in IKEA’s system.

If you already own DIRIGERA, the remote’s low price is easier to evaluate: it adds a physical controller without another hub purchase. If you would buy the hub solely for this remote, the total cost is no longer a $6.99 proposition.
3. Add it to another Matter ecosystem
BILRESA can also be commissioned in another supported Matter system, such as Apple Home, Alexa, Google Home, or SmartThings, subject to that platform’s support for Matter controller devices and button automations. Matter does not mean the remote connects directly to Wi-Fi. BILRESA uses Thread, so a compatible Matter controller and a functioning Thread Border Router are needed for a full smart-home setup. Some devices combine those roles; check your existing system’s specifications rather than assuming a phone or ordinary Wi-Fi router is enough.
For Matter pairing, insert the batteries, open your platform’s home app, start adding a Matter device, and scan the QR code on the remote or packaging. The remote enters a 15-minute pairing window after battery installation; if it expires, press the system button once to reopen it. Keep the remote, phone, and relevant hub or controller nearby while commissioning.

If the remote does not appear during setup, first check that the relevant app and hub software are up to date. Press the system button once to reopen the pairing window, then try commissioning again while staying close to the controller. IKEA’s manual says the LED pulses during pairing and blinks twice after connection.

If the remote was previously commissioned and you are moving it to another Matter setup, reset it first. Open the battery compartment and hold the system button for 10 seconds, or until the red LED stops blinking. It restarts and opens a new 15-minute pairing window.
IKEA also documents resetting the Thread network in DIRIGERA settings if repeated failures have left the network in a mismatched state. Treat that as a later troubleshooting step, not a routine fix: other Matter-over-Thread devices may need to be recommissioned afterward. For non-IKEA systems, follow that platform’s Matter troubleshooting guidance.

- Consider it if you already have a Matter controller and Thread Border Router, own compatible IKEA smart products for direct pairing, or want an inexpensive physical trigger for supported scenes and automations.
- Think twice if you expect a standalone Wi-Fi remote, want IKEA Home smart but do not own DIRIGERA, or need guaranteed button-event behavior in a particular app without checking its support.
- Check the model if you want a rotary control: the dual-button version does not have the scroll-wheel model’s rotation-style input.
Older TRÅDFRI products use Zigbee rather than Matter over Thread. Do not assume BILRESA directly replaces every legacy remote or controls every older product on its own. DIRIGERA is the more relevant route when combining older IKEA devices with newer Matter products.

IKEA’s setup guidance includes recovery steps for Matter pairing and Thread-network problems, and customer reviews describe mixed experiences. Those reports are not proof that all units or platforms have a reliability defect. They are a useful reminder that a successful Matter pairing does not necessarily mean every button action will be exposed as expected in every app.
Bottom line on the price
At $6.99, BILRESA is an inexpensive way to add physical control if the smart-home infrastructure is already in place—or if direct pairing with IKEA products meets your needs. It is less compelling as a reason to buy into a new system: the IKEA Home smart route requires DIRIGERA, while other app-based Matter setups still need compatible controller and Thread Border Router support. Buy one first if you are uncertain about platform automation behavior; consider multiples once you have confirmed the actions you need work in your setup.
