Verdict: If you are searching for IKEA Place, look for IKEA Kreativ instead. In the U.S., IKEA presents Kreativ as its current room-visualization experience in the IKEA app and on IKEA.com. It is useful for inspiration and a rough sense of furniture scale, but it cannot confirm fit, clearances, delivery access, or installation conditions. Measure independently before ordering.
What happened to IKEA Place?
IKEA Place was the company’s original augmented-reality furniture-placement app, launched in 2017. Its basic idea was to show IKEA products in a room through a phone camera. IKEA later introduced IKEA Kreativ, which adds room-image capture, removal of existing furniture from a scene, product swapping, and room-design features. IKEA’s current U.S. pages direct shoppers to Kreativ through the broader IKEA app or website, rather than presenting Place as the current standalone experience. IKEA’s announcement of Place for Android describes the older app; its Kreativ launch announcement describes the newer experience.
This is a U.S.-specific description of IKEA’s current offering; the app name, feature availability, and access can differ by country. The current U.S. IKEA app listing advertises room visualization, and IKEA’s Kreativ support page explains the active design experience. Avoid assuming an app called IKEA Place in another market is the same current product—or downloading an unofficial copy.
What IKEA Kreativ does
Put products into a room image
In the app, you can capture a room; on the web, you can upload an image. Kreativ lets you erase existing furniture from the scene, add supported IKEA furnishings and decor, and swap products to explore different looks and arrangements. This is the quickest route if you want to compare a shortlist against the appearance of your own room.

Build a room in 3D
The mobile app can scan a whole room on supported Apple devices with LiDAR. In the web version, Room Builder lets you create a room by entering dimensions manually. These are different workflows: an uploaded photo is a visual reference, a LiDAR scan creates a 3D room, and manual entry depends on the measurements you supply. IKEA’s app and web feature comparison explains which tasks are available where.
Browse virtual showrooms
Kreativ also offers more than 50 pre-built virtual rooms, according to IKEA. You can browse furnished examples, change products, or start with an empty room. These spaces are useful for ideas, but they do not model the quirks of your own walls, openings, or built-ins.
App or browser: which should you use?

For current entry points, start at IKEA’s Design and planning tools, then choose Kreativ where it is available. IKEA may change navigation labels, so the app or local IKEA site is a better guide than an old menu path.

Device compatibility and availability
iPhone and iPad
IKEA’s Kreativ support page lists iOS 14.0 or later as the feature baseline and identifies LiDAR scanning on iPhone 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max, iPhone 13 Pro and 13 Pro Max, iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max, iPad Pro 11-inch (3rd generation and later), and iPad Pro 12.9-inch (5th generation and later). However, the current U.S. App Store listing requires iOS 16.0 or later for the IKEA app as a whole. For installation, use the live store requirement, which may change independently of the Kreativ support page. Check IKEA’s device support information and the current app listing.
Android
IKEA’s support information specifies Android 9.0 or later, an ARCore-supported device, and Google Play Services for AR. That does not mean every Android phone supports the app’s AR features, and the cited documentation describes full-room scanning as an iOS LiDAR capability. Check your specific device rather than relying on the Android label alone.
Browser
Kreativ is available through IKEA.com, but the browser is not a substitute for every app feature. Use it for manual-dimension Room Builder and web-based editing or sharing; use the mobile app to capture a room. The IKEA app listing notes that features may not be available in every country.

How useful—and accurate—is it for buying furniture?
Kreativ’s real value is shortlisting, not certification. Seeing a sofa, cabinet, or table in a room image is more informative than judging it from a catalog photograph alone. It can help you compare styles and colors, spot a piece that looks plainly oversized, or decide whether a layout is worth measuring properly. Its integration with IKEA’s shopping experience also makes it convenient to move from visualization to product discovery; the U.S. app is listed as free, though local access and features can vary.

- Measure the room and compare those dimensions with the exact product’s dimensions on its product page.
- Check door and drawer travel, recliner or sofa-bed extension, and the walking paths you need to keep clear.
- Account for windows, outlets, vents, radiators, baseboards, uneven walls, and ceiling height.
- Confirm the exact product, configuration, and finish; a visualization is not confirmation that a pictured variant is the SKU you intend to buy.
- Check local stock and delivery or collection availability separately.
- For large or awkward items, check the route through doorways, stairs, and elevators; the room image does not establish delivery access.
- For wall-mounted furniture, verify the wall construction and fixing requirements independently.
For construction or renovation decisions, do not use Kreativ as a measured floor plan or contractor document. A visual fit and a buildable, safe installation are different questions.

What Kreativ does not cover well
IKEA’s U.S. documentation says Kreativ does not currently support textiles such as curtains, pillows, blankets, and tablecloths, or ceiling-mounted items such as pendant lamps and curtain rods. Those omissions can materially change how finished a room appears. IKEA also directs users to a separate Kitchen Planner for full kitchen design. See the Kreativ feature and limitation details.
The tool is also centered on IKEA’s own catalog, so it is a poor choice if you need a neutral planner for a room assembled from multiple furniture brands. Feature access may vary by country, device, app, and browser, and an attractive render cannot validate stock, exact fit, or installation requirements.
How to use it without mistaking a render for a plan
- Open the IKEA app or IKEA.com, go to Design and planning, and choose IKEA Kreativ if it is available in your market.
- Choose a virtual showroom for ideas, capture or upload a room image for visual comparison, or use web Room Builder to enter measured dimensions.
- Add and swap supported products to develop a shortlist; treat the picture as an appearance check, not a measurement result.
- Open each shortlisted product’s listing and verify its exact dimensions, configuration, finish, and local availability.
- Measure clearances and access separately, including door swings, drawers, walking routes, delivery paths, and any wall-fixing needs.
- Save or share using the options available in the app or web version; use the web version if collaborators need a Remix link.
When to use another IKEA tool or get design help
Use an IKEA planner for a specialized system
IKEA’s planners page provides specialized tools for kitchens, wardrobes, storage, and other systems. Use the Kitchen Planner rather than Kreativ for a full kitchen layout; IKEA notes that the Kitchen Planner is not compatible with mobile devices.

Consider professional IKEA design for human guidance
IKEA’s U.S. virtual interior-design service is a separate paid service, not an upgraded Kreativ subscription. The listed residential service is $149 per room and includes two virtual meetings of up to 60 minutes, a 2D top-view floor plan, a digital model, one revision, and a product quote. Additional revisions are listed at $50 per option. Check current terms and availability on IKEA’s service pricing page and interior-design service page; prices and service availability can change.
Choose a broader planner when you need other brands or measured plans
RoomSketcher is more oriented toward 2D/3D floor plans, dimensions, print-to-scale output, and professional workflows. Its pricing page lists a limited free plan and paid Pro and Team tiers; the page’s current billing options and prices should be checked directly before subscribing: RoomSketcher pricing. Homestyler offers a broader design and rendering toolkit, including multi-brand and presentation features, but has more complexity and subscription or rendering limits; consult its pricing page for current plan details.
Those alternatives make sense when your work requires more than IKEA-catalog visualization. If you are only deciding whether an IKEA piece might suit a room, Kreativ is the simpler starting point.
