Yes, IKEA is moving its newer smart-home products to Matter, and those devices can work with Apple Home. But this is not a clean replacement of every older IKEA product, nor does “Matter” always mean “no hub required.” New IKEA devices may pair directly with Apple Home; older Zigbee products generally need the DIRIGERA hub to appear there through Matter bridging.
What IKEA’s Matter transition actually means
IKEA has used Zigbee for much of its smart-home range since 2012. Its newer strategy is different: the company says almost all of its current smart products now use Matter, with a latest range of 21 Matter-enabled devices covering lighting, sensors, plugs and controls. The important distinction is between three product generations:

- Native Matter device: the IKEA accessory itself communicates using Matter.
- Older Zigbee device: the accessory remains Zigbee and does not become natively Matter-enabled.
- Matter-bridged device: DIRIGERA translates supported older IKEA products so they can be exposed to Apple Home and other Matter ecosystems.
So “IKEA is going all-in on Matter” describes the company’s direction and newer range—not a claim that every historical TRÅDFRI bulb, blind, remote or sensor has been replaced by a native Matter product.

How IKEA Matter devices work with Apple Home
Apple Home supports Matter accessories in the Home app, through Siri, in Control Center and in compatible HomeKit apps. Technically, Matter compatibility and legacy HomeKit certification are different things; for current IKEA products, the more precise description is usually “works with Apple Home through Matter.” Apple documents its Matter support through its Apple Home Matter documentation.
For Apple Home use, IKEA says you need a compatible Apple home controller such as a HomePod or Apple TV. A phone by itself is not necessarily enough for ongoing Matter control.
Transport matters too:

Many newer battery-powered sensors use Thread. For example, IKEA lists the TIMMERFLOTTE temperature and humidity sensor as Matter over Thread and identifies the need for Thread infrastructure. Check the exact product page rather than assuming every IKEA Matter product uses Wi-Fi.

Do you need DIRIGERA?
Not necessarily for a new native Matter device. IKEA says Matter-enabled products can be connected to a preferred Matter ecosystem, including Apple Home, without DIRIGERA. However, DIRIGERA remains valuable—and effectively necessary if you want to bring older IKEA Zigbee products into Apple Home.

DIRIGERA can serve three roles: an IKEA hub for older products, a Matter bridge that exposes those products to Apple Home, and a Matter controller for supported third-party Matter accessories. IKEA also identifies it as a Thread Border Router for its newer Thread devices. Buying DIRIGERA solely for one native Matter bulb usually makes little sense if you already have the required Apple and Thread infrastructure. Its strongest justification is compatibility between older and newer IKEA products.
Which IKEA products are most useful for Apple Home?
IKEA’s range includes lighting, blinds, plugs, remotes, speakers, air-quality products and sensors. Matter exposure and Apple Home features can vary by product, so treat the following as starting points rather than a guarantee of identical controls.

- TIMMERFLOTTE: a Matter-over-Thread temperature and humidity sensor. The US price was listed at $9.99 as observed in August 2026, but batteries are sold separately; IKEA recommends two AAA rechargeable cells.
- MYGGBETT: a door and window sensor listed at $9.99 on the US catalog.
- MYGGSPRAY: a motion sensor listed at $9.99.
- BILRESA: remote-control products ranging from approximately $6.99 to $27.99 depending on model or kit.
- GRILLPLATS: a smart plug listed around $14.99 on one US listing.
- TOFSMYGGA: an outdoor smart plug listed at $17.99.
Prices are US observations from IKEA pages around August 2026, not permanent prices. Review the current IKEA smart-home catalog and the individual product page before purchasing.
Lighting
The KAJPLATS range includes Matter-compatible E26 and E12 bulbs, including white-spectrum and color models. Several listed US packs were approximately $9.99 to $13.99, depending on the bulb and pack configuration. IKEA also lists products such as VARMBLIXT smart lamps and existing ORMANÄS light strips, but check the exact Matter status and whether DIRIGERA is needed for the complete feature set.
Apple Home users should verify whether the particular bulb exposes brightness, color temperature, color control and adaptive-lighting features. A bulb that pairs successfully may still offer fewer controls in Apple Home than in IKEA Home smart.
Air-quality products
The ALPSTUGA air-quality sensor was listed at $34.99 in the US catalog. Before buying it for Apple Home automations, verify which measurements Apple Home exposes—such as particulate readings, air quality or other sensor values—and whether firmware updates require IKEA Home smart or DIRIGERA.

How to add a new IKEA Matter device to Apple Home
- Confirm that the product is labeled Matter compatible and identify whether it uses Wi-Fi or Thread.
- Confirm that Apple Home has a compatible home controller.
- For a Thread product, confirm that a compatible Thread Border Router is available. Check the specific Apple TV or HomePod model and current operating-system support.
- Power on the device and place it in pairing mode.
- In Apple Home, choose Add Accessory.
- Scan the Matter QR code, which IKEA says is on the yellow cover in the packaging, or enter the 11-digit numeric Matter code.
- Assign the accessory to a room.
- Test manual control before creating scenes or automations.
Keep the packaging or photograph the Matter code. You may need it after a reset or when commissioning the device to another ecosystem.
How to combine old IKEA devices with Apple Home
- Connect DIRIGERA to your router by cable and set it up in the IKEA Home smart app.
- Add your existing IKEA Zigbee products to DIRIGERA.
- Add native Matter products either directly to Apple Home or through DIRIGERA, depending on which app and architecture you prefer.
- Expose older products through DIRIGERA’s Matter bridge.
- Choose one primary integration path for each accessory.
Matter supports multi-admin operation, so a compatible device can be shared with more than one ecosystem. That can be useful if one household uses Apple Home alongside IKEA Home smart, Alexa or Google Home. It does not guarantee identical sensor readings, buttons, scenes, automation triggers or lighting controls in every app.
Prevent duplicate accessories
Adding the same products through multiple integrations can create duplicates in Apple Home. IKEA documents this issue in its guidance on multiple Matter bridges and Matter bridges and other integrations.
If duplicates appear:
- Choose the integration you want to keep.
- Remove the duplicate bridge or integration from Apple Home.
- Leave the preferred accessory path intact.
- Reassign rooms and rebuild automations if Apple Home removes that metadata.
Do not factory-reset every device as the first response.
What can go wrong?
A Thread sensor will not pair
Check for a Thread Border Router first. Matter over Thread is not hub-free; it simply uses a different network technology. Also confirm that the sensor has batteries, is in pairing mode and has not already been commissioned to another controller.
Pairing fails or the device disappears
Potential causes include weak or fragmented Wi-Fi, disabled or mishandled IPv6, blocked multicast or mDNS, VLAN or guest-network isolation, outdated Apple or IKEA software, old DIRIGERA firmware, and mesh-router discovery problems. Update Apple operating systems, IKEA Home smart, DIRIGERA and router firmware, then retry on the main home network.
DIRIGERA release notes and industry reporting have included Matter onboarding and stability fixes, but individual reports should not be treated as proof that every installation has the same problem. IKEA’s release notes are the better place to check firmware changes.
The device appears but has limited controls
That is usually a feature-support issue rather than a failed pairing. Check whether the product’s temperature, humidity, air-quality, button, color or scene functions are explicitly supported in Apple Home. Firmware updates may still require IKEA Home smart or DIRIGERA.

Who should buy IKEA Matter products?
IKEA is a strong budget entry point for Apple Home users who want inexpensive bulbs, plugs, sensors and remotes. Buy a native Matter device directly for Apple Home when you already have the necessary Apple controller and, for Thread products, Thread infrastructure.
Choose DIRIGERA when you own older Zigbee IKEA products, want one IKEA app, need a dedicated Thread Border Router, use multiple ecosystems or want DIRIGERA to manage supported third-party Matter devices.
Delay or avoid the purchase when you need advanced lighting behavior, complete Apple Home feature parity, or a phone-only setup for a Thread device. Compare the real cost: the accessory, batteries where required, DIRIGERA if needed, and compatible Apple hardware.
