Powdery mildew usually appears as white or gray, flour-like growth on leaves, and many tree infections are mostly cosmetic. Whether to act depends on the tree species and how much damage is occurring: start with identification, airflow and selective pruning, and use a fungicide only when the exact product is labeled for that tree and site.
How to identify powdery mildew on a tree
Look for white-to-gray powdery fungal growth on leaf surfaces. It can appear on either side of a leaf and may spread to shoots, buds, flowers or fruit. New growth may be dwarfed or distorted; infected tree fruit can develop rough or corky scars. Symptoms vary by host, so a pale coating alone is not conclusive.
Powdery mildew fungi tend to be host-specific. Dogwood, crape myrtle, London plane tree and oak are among the ornamental hosts discussed in extension guidance; fruit-tree guidance covers apple, peach and nectarine, among others. A mildew affecting one tree species should not be assumed to infect a different species. If the symptoms do not fit or you are unsure of the tree’s problem, ask a local extension service or plant diagnostic service to identify it. University of Maryland Extension and UC IPM’s ornamental guidance describe host and symptom examples.
Does powdery mildew harm trees?
Often, the main effect on ornamental trees and shrubs is cosmetic. University of Minnesota Extension says of the trees and shrubs covered by its guidance: “Powdery mildew does not cause significant damage to the health of the tree and does not require management.” That should not be treated as a rule for every host or every outbreak. Some susceptible plants, including rose and ninebark, can suffer substantial leaf loss or branch-tip dieback, as Wisconsin Extension explains.

Consider what is happening to this particular tree: a light coating without meaningful loss may warrant monitoring, while repeated severe leaf loss or dieback on a valued, susceptible tree makes management more worthwhile. Tree species and the pattern of damage matter more than the presence of white growth alone.
What to do about powdery mildew
Improve growing conditions
- Choose resistant varieties when available. University of Maryland Extension lists resistant dogwood and crape myrtle options in its tree and shrub guidance.
- Give trees suitable sunlight and room for air to move through the canopy. Avoid crowding susceptible trees.
- Avoid excessive nitrogen fertilization, which can encourage lush, vulnerable new growth.
- Monitor lightly affected trees rather than treating automatically. Cultural prevention and observation are reasonable for many cases.
Prune selectively
When appropriate, pruning can improve light and airflow or remove a small infected area. Remove severely affected shoots only where advised for the host, and dispose of infected material according to local guidance. Avoid heavy pruning during the growing season: it can stimulate a flush of fresh shoots that are vulnerable to infection.

Decide whether treatment is justified
Consider treatment when the host is highly susceptible, the tree is important to you, or damage is repeatedly substantial. For a lightly affected tree with no significant decline, monitoring and cultural measures may be enough. These are practical decision factors, not a universal treatment threshold.

Fungicides generally protect healthy leaves and shoots; they are less useful once infection is extensive. For susceptible plants selected for chemical control, University of Minnesota Extension advises scouting and starting treatment when the first powdery mildew leaf spot is found. Some oils are described for mild-to-moderate infection in UC IPM’s ornamental guidance, but an option’s suitability depends on the tree and the product.

Extension sources discuss product categories such as horticultural oils, neem or other plant-based oils, sulfur, potassium bicarbonate and biological products. Those categories are not blanket recommendations for every tree. Before using anything, check that the exact product label includes powdery mildew, the tree or plant site, and the intended use; follow all directions and local regulations. If the label does not cover the tree and site, do not use the product for that purpose.

- UC IPM warns not to use oils when temperatures exceed 90°F and advises keeping oil and sulfur applications at least two weeks apart. Check the exact label as well: product restrictions or plant sensitivity may require additional caution. See its ornamental guidance and fruit-tree guidance.
- Do not assume a product safe for one kind of tree is appropriate for another. Host, site, timing and label directions control the decision.
- Avoid relying on homemade spray recipes. Extension recommendations emphasize labeled products and their cautions; an unverified mixture can injure plants.
A practical decision checklist
- Identify the tree and check whether its symptoms match powdery mildew; seek local diagnosis if uncertain.
- Assess the impact: note whether the infection is light and cosmetic or causing recurring, substantial leaf loss or shoot dieback.
- Improve sunlight and airflow where feasible, avoid excessive nitrogen, and monitor new growth.
- Prune only a small affected area or severely infected shoots when appropriate; avoid excessive growing-season pruning.
- If considering a fungicide, verify that the specific product label covers the disease, tree and site, then follow its directions and temperature and application restrictions.
