Yes—free floor-plan software can produce a useful, scaled layout for furniture planning, room renovations, rental listings, and early design discussions. The most important step is not creating a realistic 3D image; it is measuring the space accurately, setting the correct units, and checking the dimensioned 2D plan.
For most beginners, Floorplanner is the easiest browser-based starting point. Sweet Home 3D is a stronger choice for a detailed desktop workflow. Other tools suit mobile measurement, fast decorating, or flexible 3D modeling. Remember that “free” may mean free drawing but paid exporting, printing, high-resolution rendering, or additional projects.
Decide what kind of floor plan you need
A floor plan is a scaled, top-down drawing showing walls, rooms, doors, windows, stairs, fixtures, built-ins, dimensions, and—when useful—furniture.

Free software is well suited to:
- Testing furniture arrangements.
- Planning a kitchen, bathroom, bedroom, or home office.
- Comparing renovation concepts.
- Checking whether furniture will fit.
- Planning flooring, paint, cabinets, and storage.
- Creating a rental or real-estate visual.
- Communicating an early idea to a designer or contractor.
It is not automatically suitable for permit drawings, structural work, engineering, or construction documents. A consumer plan may omit structural, mechanical, electrical, fire-separation, accessibility, and code information. Software cannot determine whether a wall is load-bearing or whether a proposed layout complies with local requirements.

Free access is not one thing. Check separately whether the product allows free drawing, saving, 3D viewing, sharing, printing, high-resolution export, editable-file export, and commercial use.
Current free-tier examples
- Floorplanner: free projects are limited to five projects, three floors, and three designs, with SD exports and a watermark. See the pricing and project-level pages for current limits.
- Planner 5D: its listed free plan includes unlimited projects, web and mobile access, and part of the furniture catalog. Exact dimension controls and advanced functions may require Premium or PRO.
- RoomSketcher: its free subscription includes up to two projects, measurements, labels, furniture, and low-resolution 3D viewing. Downloading or printing a generated plan may require an in-app purchase.
- Magicplan: its Sketch plan documentation describes two free projects and export formats including PDF, JPG, PNG, SVG, CSV, DXF, OBJ, and USDZ. Confirm the current entitlement before relying on a free export.
Measure the space before opening the software
Start with a hand sketch. Record whether each measurement is taken from the finished inside face, outside face, or wall centerline. Do not mix those conventions.
Room geometry
- Overall wall-to-wall length and width.
- Wall thickness where it affects the plan.
- Ceiling height.
- Irregular corners, alcoves, bump-outs, and angled walls.
- Room-to-room transitions.
Doors and windows
- Door width and location from the nearest corner.
- Hinge side and swing direction.
- Window width, height, location, and sill height.
- Sliding-door or pocket-door direction.
Fixed elements
- Fireplaces, radiators, columns, and posts.
- Plumbing stacks and kitchen cabinets.
- Appliances, stairs, and landings.
- HVAC registers, electrical panels, and built-in shelving.
Use a tape measure for small rooms and a laser distance meter for larger or irregular spaces. Measure important walls twice, photograph every wall and corner, and record units explicitly as feet/inches or metric.

1. Set units and project scale
Set the unit system before drawing. In Sweet Home 3D, use Sweet Home 3D > Preferences on macOS or File > Preferences on other systems to set units, default wall thickness, and wall height. Browser interfaces can change, so confirm the current labels in the product documentation.
2. Draw the exterior outline
- Draw the longest exterior wall.
- Continue around the perimeter.
- Close the outline.
- Enter exact lengths.
- Add offsets, bump-outs, and irregular corners.
- Compare the result with the hand sketch.
Build the shell before adding furniture. If the shell is wrong, every later decision is misleading.

3. Add interior partitions
Draw interior walls from measured endpoints and match wall thickness where possible. If testing a renovation, save separate existing, demolition, and proposed versions. Never assume a wall can be removed because the software lets you delete it.
4. Add doors and windows
Enter the width, position, height or sill height where available, and operation type. Include the leaf, hinge side, and swing arc. A room that looks spacious without door swings may become unusable once the openings are represented.

In Sweet Home 3D, doors and windows are added after the walls and automatically create openings in them.
5. Add stairs, fixtures, and built-ins
Add toilets, sinks, showers, tubs, counters, appliances, stairs, closets, radiators, columns, and other fixed elements before decorative furniture. Include door-clearance zones and access for maintenance.
6. Add furniture using real dimensions
Measure your actual sofa, bed, table, cabinets, and appliances. Use a library object with similar dimensions, resize it when possible, and label custom objects. Catalog images and names do not guarantee that an item matches yours.

7. Check the 2D plan
- Are the walls and room dimensions correct?
- Do door swings avoid furniture and fixtures?
- Can cabinet doors, drawers, appliances, and closets open?
- Are walkways practical?
- Are windows, radiators, vents, and electrical panels accessible?
- Do stairs align between floors?
8. Review the 3D view
Use 3D as a checking layer, not as proof of accuracy. It can reveal a sofa blocking a window, an overly deep counter, a low ceiling, a poor sightline, or a room that feels cramped despite fitting numerically. The dimensioned 2D plan remains authoritative for measured relationships.
9. Add labels and dimensions
Identify rooms, overall dimensions, major wall lengths, door and window widths, and relevant furniture dimensions. Add orientation or a north arrow when daylight matters, and include the version name and date.
Example workflow: Floorplanner
- Create a free account and start a project.
- Set the correct unit system.
- Use the build tools to draw walls or rooms.
- Add doors and windows.
- Correct geometry with manual dimensions.
- Upload and scale a background drawing if tracing an existing plan.
- Add room labels, dimensions, furniture, and fixed elements.
- Open the 3D view and inspect circulation.
- Check the export resolution and watermark before sharing.
Floorplanner is a strong first choice because it combines browser access with dedicated wall, room, opening, dimension, background-plan, and 3D tools. Its free tier is best for planning and informal sharing; higher-quality exports, additional project capacity, and some formats may require credits or a subscription.
Example workflow: Sweet Home 3D
- Set units, wall thickness, and wall height in Preferences.
- Import a scanned blueprint or sketch as a background image.
- Correct the background scale using a known dimension.
- Draw walls over the image.
- Adjust wall thickness, height, color, and texture.
- Add doors, windows, dimensions, and text.
- Add and resize furniture.
- Review the 3D view.
- Save the editable project before exporting or printing.
If walls are misaligned, move their endpoints. To create a branch, use Plan > Split wall. If the entire plan is incorrectly scaled, correct the background-image scale or rebuild it from verified measurements instead of stretching individual rooms.
Other tools: when they make sense
Planner 5D
Use Planner 5D for quick visual experimentation, templates, and cross-device 2D/3D work. You can begin from a template, uploaded plan, or blank project. However, its help documentation states that changing many object dimensions—including ceiling height, wall thickness, opening widths, and furniture dimensions—may require Premium or PRO. Do not assume every precise control is free.

RoomSketcher
RoomSketcher is useful when ease of measured drawing matters. Its free subscription supports drawing, measurements, room labels, furniture, and basic 3D review, but the Help Center distinguishes designing a plan from generating a downloadable or printable plan. Confirm the required purchase before committing to it as your final-output tool.
Magicplan
Magicplan is most useful for mobile capture and existing-space documentation. Its listed export formats include PDF, JPG, PNG, SVG, CSV, DXF, OBJ, and USDZ, but creating a sketch and having unrestricted exports are different things. Check the current project and export limits.
SketchUp for Web
SketchUp for Web is a free browser option requiring a browser and Trimble ID. It is powerful for unusual spaces and custom 3D objects, but it requires more manual work. Use groups or components so geometry does not stick together, then create separate scenes for plan, 3D, and presentation views.

Keep at least four versions:
- The editable project file.
- A dated existing-conditions copy.
- A dated proposed-layout copy.
- A dimensioned PDF or image for sharing.
Use PNG or JPG for casual sharing, PDF for printing, and DXF or 3D formats only when the software and receiving professional support them. A screenshot may be acceptable for informal furniture planning, but it is not a scaled construction drawing.

Common problems and recovery steps
The plan looks right but is not to scale
Check the unit setting, background calibration, and whether you entered inside or outside dimensions. Compare one known dimension, correct the project scale or redraw the geometry, and then check at least two unrelated dimensions.
Interior and exterior dimensions disagree
Wall thickness may have been ignored. Decide whether the source measurements are inside-to-inside, outside-to-outside, or centerline-to-centerline, and apply one convention consistently.
Furniture fits, but the room does not work
Inspect door swings, cabinet and appliance openings, window access, circulation, sightlines, and maintenance access. Numeric fit alone is not a usable layout.
The free plan cannot export
Possible options include sharing an allowed project link, using a screenshot for informal planning, recreating the basic geometry in a desktop tool, or paying for the required export. Do not describe a screenshot as a scaled technical drawing.
A plan was generated from an image
AI or image-conversion tools can speed up tracing, but treat the result as a draft. Verify every wall, opening, and dimension against physical measurements.
What free software cannot replace
- A survey or verified as-built measurement when exact existing conditions matter.
- Structural analysis or confirmation that a wall is load-bearing.
- Engineering for beams, foundations, stairs, or additions.
- Accurate plumbing, electrical, ventilation, or fire-system design.
- Local permit and code review.
- Guaranteed manufacturer-specific clearances.
For structural changes, additions, stairs, egress, or major plumbing and electrical work, involve the relevant licensed professional and check your local authority’s requirements. A polished render is not the same as a permit-ready or construction-ready drawing.
Final recommendation
Choose Floorplanner for the fastest beginner-friendly browser workflow. Choose Sweet Home 3D when you want a detailed desktop tool without relying on a subscription-first workflow. Choose Planner 5D for quick visual experimentation across devices, RoomSketcher when ease of use matters and paid output is acceptable, Magicplan for mobile field documentation, and SketchUp for Web when custom 3D modeling matters more than speed.
Whatever tool you select, use the same sequence: measure, set units, draw the shell, verify scale, add openings and fixed elements, furnish with real dimensions, inspect in 2D and 3D, and preserve the editable source file.
