An iRobot Roomba Virtual Wall creates an invisible boundary to keep a compatible robot out of a doorway or away from a small floor-level object. First check your exact Roomba model: support varies, and many newer models do not work with physical Virtual Walls. If yours is compatible, choose the right accessory and mode, position it, then test the boundary before relying on it.
Check whether your Roomba supports Virtual Walls
Find the model name or number on the robot, its box, in the app, or in your purchase record. Then check iRobot’s Virtual Wall compatibility and setup guide and its broader compatibility table. Do not assume support based on the Roomba family name alone.
iRobot’s Virtual Wall overview lists the 500, 600, 700, 800, and 900 Series; e and s models; i3/i3+, i4/i4+, i5/i5+, i6/i6+, i7/i7+, and i8/i8+; and Combo i5/i5+ as compatible. It lists many others as unsupported, including i1/i1+, i2/i2+, j-series, several Combo models, Essential models, and newer 100, 200, 400, 500, and 700 Series products. The list can change as models are added, so verify your exact robot before buying or troubleshooting an accessory.

Identify the Virtual Wall accessory you have
Different accessories called “Virtual Wall” use different controls and compatibility rules. Identify yours before following setup steps.

The current Dual Mode Virtual Wall Barrier product page identifies it for Roomba s, i, e, 900, 800, 700, 600, and 500 Series, but model-level support still matters.
Set up the Dual Mode Virtual Wall Barrier
- Install batteries. Open the compartment and insert two AA batteries, matching the polarity markings. The product listing says two AA batteries are included with that product. iRobot says they can last up to approximately 12 months under normal use; that is not a guaranteed service life.
- Choose the mode. Move the switch up for Virtual Wall Mode, leave it in the middle for Off, or move it down for Halo Mode. The ring pulses five times when the unit activates or a new mode is selected, then normally turns off during operation.
- Place it for a doorway boundary. For Virtual Wall Mode, set the unit on the floor with its sensor aimed across the opening you want to block—not parallel to it. Its beam is cone-shaped, so the boundary widens with distance.
- Check the opening width. iRobot gives an approximate maximum span of 10 feet (3 meters) for the current Dual Mode Barrier. Treat this as an approximate limit, not a guarantee for every room layout.
- Run Roomba and observe it. Start the robot normally and watch at least one approach. It should detect the boundary and turn away. If it crosses, use the troubleshooting checks below before relying on the placement.
Use Halo Mode to protect an object
Halo Mode creates a circular exclusion zone of approximately 2 feet (0.6 meters) around the Dual Mode Barrier. Switch to the lower position, place the unit on the floor near the object, and keep the object within the zone. The mode is suited to a bowl, vase, plant stand, or other small floor-level item—not a large area or a hazard that requires a physical barrier. Test Roomba’s approach before leaving it unattended.
Set up the separate Virtual Wall Halo for bowls
The Virtual Wall Halo is a different, bowl-focused accessory. Follow iRobot’s Virtual Wall Halo instructions rather than the Dual Mode steps.

- Remove the Virtual Wall unit from its sleeve and install its batteries.
- Set the unit to Auto mode, then reinsert it fully into the sleeve. Check that the circular lens is completely visible at the top.
- Place the Halo on the floor beside the bowls. For one bowl, position it beside the Halo and almost touching the wall; for two bowls, place one bowl on either side.
- Use it only with non-metal bowls less than approximately 10 inches (25 cm) in diameter and up to approximately 3.5 inches (9 cm) tall. Test the setup; a weakening battery can make the protective field insufficient.
Use a Virtual Wall Lighthouse only with a compatible older Roomba
A Lighthouse is not simply a Dual Mode Barrier under another name. It uses RF communication with compatible older Roombas; standard Auto Virtual Walls use infrared. iRobot lists Lighthouse-compatible models including 564, 570, 571, 572, 577, 580, 581, 587, 599, 610, 611, 625, 780, 785, 790, 799, 877, 880, and 889. Check the exact model and accessory instructions before use.
- Virtual Wall Mode: use it as a fixed barrier to block an area.
- Lighthouse Mode: place one in the doorway of each room to be cleaned, with the iRobot logo facing forward and the selector set to Lighthouse. Start Roomba from its Home Base; the Lighthouse helps guide room-to-room cleaning, with a maximum cleaning period of approximately 25 minutes per area.
iRobot recommends no more than two Lighthouses per cleaning mission. Do not place one too close to another Lighthouse, an Auto Virtual Wall, or the Home Base, as infrared signals can interfere. The Lighthouse takes two C alkaline batteries. iRobot describes a slow, steady blink as a low-battery indication.
Choose between a physical Virtual Wall and Keep Out Zones
On supported Smart Map Roombas, Keep Out Zones in the iRobot HOME app let you mark restricted areas on a digital map instead of placing a beacon. Availability depends on the robot model, pairing, app version, and robot software; Wi-Fi alone does not guarantee the feature. See iRobot’s Keep Out Zones and Smart Map information.

- Choose a Virtual Wall when the robot supports it and you need a temporary or frequently changing boundary, have no suitable map feature, or want to block an area while the robot learns its space.
- Choose a Keep Out Zone when your model supports Smart Maps and the restricted area is stable and accurately represented on the map.
- Choose a closed door or physical gate when the robot is incompatible, the opening exceeds the accessory’s effective range, or the consequence of crossing is serious.
Troubleshoot a Virtual Wall that is not working
Roomba crosses the boundary
- Recheck compatibility for the exact Roomba and accessory type.
- Confirm the switch is in Virtual Wall Mode, not Off or Halo Mode.
- Replace weak batteries. On a Dual Mode Barrier, flashing indicates batteries need replacement.
- Put the unit on the floor and aim it across the opening. Confirm the span is within the approximate 10-foot (3-meter) maximum for the Dual Mode Barrier.
- Clear objects that interrupt the sensor path and separate nearby Home Bases, Lighthouses, or other infrared accessories.
- Move Roomba slowly toward the boundary and observe whether it detects the signal. Adjust the placement and test again.
Roomba turns away too far from the doorway
The cone-shaped beam may be reaching farther into the room than intended, especially if the beacon is angled inward or set too far from the threshold. Move it closer to the opening and aim the beam so it crosses the threshold rather than projecting deep into the room.

The Halo does not protect bowls
For the separate Virtual Wall Halo, verify that the unit is fully inserted into its sleeve, its lens is visible, the bowls are non-metal and within the stated size limits, and the accessory is close to them. Replace weak batteries and test again.
The indicator light is unexpected
On the Dual Mode Barrier, five pulses indicate activation or a mode change; the light normally turns off during operation, and flashing indicates low batteries. Lighthouse indicators differ: iRobot says no light can mean Roomba is off or not paired, a steady light indicates an active connection and cleaning mission, five blinks indicate RF communication, and a slow steady blink indicates low batteries.
The accessory seems unresponsive or you will store it
Check the battery orientation and the accessory-specific instructions. For extended storage, iRobot recommends moving the Dual Mode Barrier switch to the middle Off position. Its battery replacement guidance provides additional help for Virtual Wall accessories.

If your Roomba is incompatible—particularly if it is a j-series or another newer model listed as unsupported—do not keep repositioning the beacon or assume a different physical Virtual Wall will work. Check the exact model’s support information; use a supported app feature if available, or close the door or use a physical barrier.
