Samsung lets owners of supported Family Hub refrigerators turn off the new cover-screen ads from Settings > Advertisements. You do not need to disconnect the refrigerator from Wi-Fi or remove your Samsung account to use this control. The setting is specifically for cover-screen advertising, however—not a promise to remove every promotion in Samsung apps or connected services.
Why ads appeared on some Samsung refrigerators
On October 27, 2025, Samsung announced a software-update pilot adding a widget with curated advertisements to certain Family Hub cover-screen themes. Samsung described the widget as combining content such as news, calendar, and weather with advertising. It is an idle-screen feature, not advertising shown as part of the refrigerator’s cooling operation. The announcement covered selected Family Hub refrigerators and themes, not every Samsung refrigerator. Samsung’s announcement said the rollout would begin in October 2025; availability can depend on model, software, and country.
Turn off Family Hub cover-screen ads
- On the refrigerator touchscreen, open Settings.
- Select Advertisements.
- Turn off the cover-screen advertising option.
- Return to the cover screen and give the idle display time to refresh.
Samsung’s support instructions for turning off Family Hub ads and its newsroom announcement identify the refrigerator’s Settings area as the place to manage them. Follow the wording displayed on your software version; do not assume a separate “personalized ads” or “marketing” control is the same setting.

What turning off ads does—and does not—change
Samsung presents this as a cover-screen advertising preference. Its documented route does not require turning off Wi-Fi, disconnecting SmartThings, or removing the Samsung account. Those connected services support functions such as managing compatible appliances and remote monitoring; features vary by model. Samsung’s Family Hub support hub describes the platform’s connected functions.

The available documentation does not provide a feature-by-feature guarantee for every refrigerator after ads are disabled. It supports the narrower conclusion that the ad control is separate from the refrigerator’s core operation. Nor does switching it off necessarily suppress recipe recommendations, app banners, SmartThings notifications, Samsung account communications, or other promotions. Those are distinct content or communication channels, and the cover-screen setting is not documented as a universal marketing opt-out.
Alternatives to switching off all cover-screen ads
- Dismiss one ad: Samsung says an individual ad can be dismissed and will not appear again during that campaign period. This does not permanently block all ads or guarantee that the same promotion will never return later.
- Choose an Art or Album theme: Samsung says these cover-screen themes do not display advertisements. They are an option if you prefer a photo or art display over a dashboard-style theme.
Both options are described in Samsung’s October 2025 announcement.
If the Advertisements setting is missing
- Confirm the refrigerator has Family Hub. Wi-Fi connectivity alone does not mean a model has the Family Hub cover screen or this control.
- Check for a software update on the refrigerator. Samsung said update availability is announced on the refrigerator screen; follow the on-screen notice and terms to install it. The advertising pilot was for select models, so an update does not guarantee every model receives the setting.
- Look on the refrigerator panel. The announced control is under the panel’s Settings, not in the SmartThings app.
- Use an Art or Album theme or dismiss the displayed ad as a workaround if those controls are available on your model.
- Restart the display after changing the setting if an ad remains visible, then check whether the content is a cover-screen ad or a promotion inside an app.
- Contact Samsung support with the refrigerator model and software version if the control remains unavailable after checking for updates.
Do not start by blocking the refrigerator at the router or disconnecting Wi-Fi. That can affect remote monitoring, SmartThings control, updates, and other connected services, while Samsung documents an on-device opt-out for supported models.

Samsung’s stated position on ad privacy
Samsung characterizes Family Hub cover-screen advertising as contextual or non-personalized and says these ads do not involve collecting personal information or tracking consumers for that purpose. That is Samsung’s description of this ad feature, not an independent audit of the refrigerator’s broader data practices. Connected features can have separate account, Wi-Fi, SmartThings, or cloud requirements. For example, Samsung’s May 2026 announcement of a separate AI update says certain features on select 32-inch Family Hub models require Wi-Fi and a Samsung account; that rollout should not be taken to mean all Family Hub models have identical capabilities or menus.
