To texture a wall, apply joint compound or a purpose-made texture coating to a clean, sound surface, then shape it with a sprayer, roller, sponge, brush, trowel or other tool. The right method depends on the finish you want, the size of the area and how much control you need. Prepare the wall first, protect adjacent surfaces, follow the material and tool instructions, and let the texture dry as directed before painting.
Choose a wall-texture method
The 13 options below are practical technique variations rather than a universal industry classification. Several create similar appearances with different tools, and the final result changes with material consistency, tool, pressure, timing and application pattern.

1. Spray texture
Load a suitable texture product, or compound prepared exactly as its manufacturer specifies, into a compatible texture sprayer. Test on scrap material, adjust the nozzle and airflow as directed, and move the sprayer slowly and evenly. Keep the gun at a consistent distance and overlap passes enough to avoid bare strips.

Orange peel is a light spray pattern named by USG for its interior spray-texture products. Apply it with the product’s recommended sprayer settings and build the pattern gradually rather than trying to correct heavy deposits after they dry.

3. Spatter
Spatter leaves visible sprayed droplets. Apply a compatible spray texture in controlled passes, checking the pattern frequently on the wall and on a test board. Material viscosity and sprayer settings are equipment-specific, so use the product and sprayer instructions instead of a universal setting.
4. Spatter/knockdown
Spray the material, then wait until it reaches the working stage stated by the product directions. Lightly draw a suitable flat tool over the high spots to soften them. Excess pressure can smear the pattern, while waiting too long can make the peaks difficult to flatten.
5. Sponge texture
Spread a workable layer of compound or texture coating, then pat or dab it with a clean sponge. Vary the angle and pressure slightly, but keep your motion consistent across each section so the transition between sections is less noticeable.

6. Roller texture
Apply compound or texture coating with a roller suited to the product. Work in manageable sections and maintain a wet edge. The roller’s pattern and pile depth affect the finished relief; a deeper pile generally leaves a heavier texture than a shallow pile.
7. Stipple knockdown
USG’s installation guidance describes creating a heavy stippled surface with a roller, brush or trowel. Allow it to firm slightly, then lightly strike down the stipple tops with a trowel. Use a consistent touch so the flattened areas do not become broad glossy smears.
8. Stucco-like roller texture
Roll a texture coating or suitable compound over the prepared wall. Choose pile depth according to the relief you want: deeper pile produces a more textured result, while shallow pile produces a subtler surface. Follow the coating label for coverage and working time.

9. Swirls
While the compound is still workable, use a whisk broom, brush or trowel to make overlapping arcs. Keep the arcs similar in size and direction, and plan how each pass will meet the previous one before the material begins to set.

10. Rough ’n’ tumble
Apply the material with a roller, brush or spray gun, then work gently over it with a rope-wrapped roller if that tool and pattern suit your product. The rope creates irregular relief; use light pressure and test first because the appearance depends heavily on the material’s consistency.
11. Ridges
Spread a uniform layer of wet joint compound and draw a notched trowel through it in one direction. Keep the tool angle and pressure steady for parallel lines, cleaning the notches when compound builds up.

12. Crosshatching
Create one set of ridges with a notched trowel, then draw through the still-wet compound in a second direction. Crossing the passes creates a grid-like pattern. Work in small sections so the first marks remain workable when you add the second set.
13. Trowel-shaped hand texture
Spread and shape compound with a trowel or wide putty knife. You can create broad bands, skips or overlapping marks, but describe and reproduce the pattern by the actual motion you use rather than relying on an unsupported trade name. Keep the tool clean and vary pressure deliberately.

Prepare the wall before texturing
- Inspect and repair. Remove loose material, fill damage and make the surface sound. On new drywall, properly treat joints and nail or screw heads before texturing.
- Clean and dry. Remove dust, grease and loose residue, then allow the wall to dry. Follow the chosen product’s substrate requirements.
- Check special substrates. USG’s Wall and Ceiling Texture Installation Guide (J1828) says new concrete or plaster should age at least 60 days before texturing.
- Control conditions. USG states that product, air and surface temperatures must remain at least 55 °F (13 °C) throughout finishing when using joint compound, primer and texture products.
- Protect the room. Mask trim, outlets, floors and adjoining walls. Spraying can create substantial overspray, so cover furniture and nearby surfaces completely.
Apply joint compound or texture coating safely and consistently
Mix only as directed
For joint compound, add water according to the compound maker’s instructions. Do not use a universal thinning ratio: a sprayer may require a different consistency, and the correct mixture depends on both the compound and the equipment.

Test before committing to the wall
Make a test panel or use an inconspicuous area. Confirm the pattern, coverage, working time and tool pressure before continuing. This is especially important for spray, knockdown and hand-pattern methods.
Keep the pattern continuous
Work in sections that you can finish while the material remains workable. Maintain a consistent direction, overlap and tool angle, and blend section edges before they set.
Drying and painting
The Home Depot guide’s joint-compound approach advises waiting at least a full 24 hours before painting. That is not a guarantee for every product or application: layer thickness, temperature, humidity and ventilation change drying time. Use the selected texture product’s label as the controlling instruction, and do not prime or paint until the texture is fully dry and firm.

- Want a sprayed appearance? Choose spray texture, orange peel, spatter or spatter/knockdown.
- Need hand control and minimal equipment? Choose sponge, roller, swirls, ridges, crosshatching or trowel-shaped texture.
- Want heavier relief? Consider deep-pile roller, stipple knockdown, stucco-like texture or rough ’n’ tumble.
- Working over a large area? Spraying can cover spray-created patterns efficiently, but requires careful masking and equipment setup.
- Repairing a small damaged area? Match the existing pattern with a hand tool or a repair aerosol such as water-based knockdown texture, then feather the edges.
Exact results cannot be guaranteed from a method name alone. Material, tool, substrate, timing and operator technique all affect the finished wall, so make a test panel and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the specific product.
