To give dahlias the best chance of growing again next year, lift them before the ground freezes, dry them thoroughly, and keep them in a cool, dark, frost-free place through winter. Inspect the tubers periodically and remove any that rot. These steps improve the chance of regrowth, but cannot guarantee that every tuber survives or flowers.
When to lift dahlia tubers
Use local frost conditions, not a single calendar date. The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) advises lifting after the first frosts have damaged the foliage; if frosts arrive late, it says to lift by late November. Oregon State University Extension’s advice reflects its regional conditions and discusses lifting after a hard freeze. In any location, protect tender dahlias from freezing ground and storage conditions.
Choose whether to store a clump or divide in fall

Both methods are described in extension and horticultural guidance; neither is established as best for every climate, cultivar, or gardener. If you prefer to avoid fall cuts, keep the clump intact and divide it when spring planting approaches.

- Loosen the soil carefully. Lift the clump without cutting or snapping the tubers. Handle it gently: damage can contribute to rot in storage.
- Remove loose soil. Shake or brush off as much as practical without injuring the tubers. Washing is not required for every method: Oregon State’s fall-division instructions include washing, while its intact-clump approach says to remove excess soil without washing. RHS advises shaking off soil.
- Discard unhealthy material. Remove damaged or rotting tubers and thin roots as appropriate. If storing an intact clump, avoid dividing it now unless you have chosen the fall-division method.
Dry the tubers before packing
Drying helps limit excess moisture in storage, but the recommended procedure depends on the method. For clumps, RHS advises turning them upside down for a few weeks so moisture can drain from the hollow stems. Oregon State’s divided-tuber guidance calls for air-drying on a mesh screen. In a separate article revised in 2025, it describes 24 hours of drying in a sheltered, garage-like space and cautions against setting tubers on concrete, which can wick moisture. Treat these as source-specific approaches, not one universal drying schedule; pack only once the tubers are thoroughly dry.

Pack and store them in a cool, dark place
Keep tubers dark and frost-free. Oregon State University Extension gives 34–40°F as its ideal dark storage range and says, “Dahlia tubers will stay dormant throughout the winter at this temperature.” This is that extension service’s practical recommendation, not a universal temperature rule. RHS gives the broader guidance to use a cool, dark, frost-free place.
Use dry packing material in a container that is not airtight. Suitable options vary by source:

- Oregon State University Extension: coarse vermiculite, coconut coir, or wood shavings for divided tubers. For intact clumps, it also describes cardboard or wooden boxes, or a plastic tote without an airtight lid, with newspaper, coir, coarse vermiculite, or wood shavings as cover. Keep a storage bag open rather than sealing in moisture.
- RHS: dry spent potting compost, sand, straw, or newspaper in shallow crates or open-topped boxes.
Choose a material you can keep dry and check through winter. Oregon State cautions that wood shavings may cause tubers to shrivel, so monitor them if you use that medium.

Check the tubers during winter
Inspect the storage container periodically for condensation, damp packing, and rot. Condensation can signal excess moisture. Remove rotting tubers; if a bag or packing material is damp, let it air-dry before returning the tubers to storage. Avoid routine misting as a blanket rule: the goal is to prevent both trapped moisture and excessive drying.

Prepare viable tubers for spring
As spring approaches, Oregon State University Extension recommends moving dormant tubers to 40–50°F to encourage visible eyes if they have not appeared. If you stored a clump and want to divide it, RHS advises doing so in spring and ensuring each division retains viable growth points. Planting viable tubers gives them a chance to grow again, but storage cannot guarantee survival or blooms.
