To set up a recurring power schedule, open your smart plug’s manufacturer app, select the plug, choose Schedule or Automation, add an On or Off action, select the time and repeat days, save it, and test the result. Menu names vary between Kasa, Tapo, Smart Life, Meross, Alexa, Google Home, Apple Home, and Matter devices, so use the equivalent control in your app.
A schedule controls when electricity reaches the appliance. It does not guarantee that the appliance will start automatically after power is restored.
Before you start
- Plug the smart plug into a working outlet and add it to the correct manufacturer app or Matter ecosystem.
- Confirm that the plug is connected to the required Wi-Fi network. Many older Wi-Fi plugs require 2.4-GHz Wi-Fi; TP-Link documents this requirement for current Kasa products in its support FAQ.
- Give the device a clear name, such as Living Room Lamp, and test its manual On and Off controls.
- Check the home’s location, time zone, daylight-saving settings, and any required app permissions.
- Make sure the connected appliance is switched on in its own controls and will resume operation when power returns.
- Check the smart plug’s voltage, amperage, wattage, load type, and indoor or outdoor rating.
Universal setup method
1. Open the plug’s device controls
In the manufacturer’s app, tap the plug’s device card or name. Look for Schedule, Automation, Smart Actions, Scenes, or Routine.
For a repeating clock-based action, choose Schedule or an equivalent automation. Do not choose a countdown timer unless you want the plug to change state after a duration measured from now.

2. Add the first action
Choose whether the plug should turn On or Off. A complete routine normally needs two entries—for example, turn a lamp on at 6:30 p.m. and off at 11 p.m.
3. Set the time and repeat pattern
Select the exact time and choose every day, weekdays, weekends, or specific custom days. If supported, you may instead select sunrise or sunset, sometimes with an offset before or after it. Sunrise and sunset depend on the location configured for the home, and availability varies by product, firmware, and app.

4. Save and enable the schedule
After saving, check the schedule list. Confirm the correct device, time, action, repeat days, and enabled toggle. Review other entries for conflicting commands.

Create a temporary On or Off event two or three minutes in the future. Watch both the plug and the appliance, then delete or disable the test entry.

Exact example: TP-Link Kasa
TP-Link’s Kasa app guide documents this path: Home → tap the smart plug → Schedule → + → configure the On or Off time and repeat settings → Save. Repeat the process to add the second action, and use the schedule page to disable entries you no longer need. The guide also documents sunrise and sunset scheduling on supported products.
TP-Link says Kasa schedules and timers are loaded locally on supported devices and can continue during an internet outage. That behavior should not be assumed for every brand, cloud routine, or third-party platform. Kasa’s power-loss behavior also varies by product: settings may be retained, while the restored On or Off state depends on the model. Tapo, Matter, Alexa, Google Home, and Apple Home
The manufacturer app is usually the simplest place to create a basic recurring schedule. Tapo’s TP15 materials list schedules, auto-off timers, Away Mode, remote control, and local control, while also documenting onboarding through the Tapo app or a compatible Matter app. The exact menu path can change with the app version; see the Tapo TP15 product page.

Third-party routines are useful when one event must control several devices—for example, sunset turning on a plug and outdoor lights—but execution may depend on the platform, account link, hub or controller, and internet connection. Schedule, timer, Away Mode, or automation?

Example: a weekday On and Off routine
- Add an entry for On at 6:30 a.m. on weekdays.
- Add a separate entry for Off at 8:00 a.m. on weekdays.
- Save both and confirm that both are enabled.
- Test with a temporary near-future event before relying on the routine.
A manual tap or voice command can change the current state without necessarily deleting the schedule. A countdown timer may be canceled by manual control, while a recurring schedule can remain active; behavior varies by app.
If the schedule does not work
The schedule never runs
- Confirm it is enabled and assigned to the intended plug.
- Check the repeat days and whether the event was saved.
- Look for duplicate or overlapping schedules.
- Check whether the plug is online and whether the schedule is stored on the plug, a hub, or a cloud service.
- Update the app and plug firmware, then recreate the schedule if necessary.
It runs at the wrong time
- Check the home location and time zone, not just the phone’s settings.
- Review daylight-saving settings and sunrise/sunset location data.
- If the time remains wrong, disable and recreate the schedule.
The appliance does not turn on
Manually turn the plug on and off. If the plug changes state but the appliance does not, unplug the appliance, restore power, and observe whether it resumes automatically. Some devices remain off until a physical button is pressed or require a proprietary command after power is restored.
The plug is offline or pairing fails
- Connect the phone to the home Wi-Fi network and temporarily disable a VPN.
- Use the required band, often 2.4 GHz for older plugs.
- Move the plug closer to the router.
- Avoid captive-portal, hotel, airport, and some enterprise networks.
- Check whether another account already owns the plug.
- Update the app before resetting the device.
Reset only as a last resort and follow the model’s manual. For the Kasa Plug Series guide, holding the power button for about five seconds resets Wi-Fi while retaining previous settings; holding it for about 10 seconds performs a factory reset. These timings are not universal.

- Check voltage, amperage, wattage, and whether the rating covers resistive, motor, or inductive loads.
- Be especially cautious with heaters, air conditioners, refrigerators, pumps, and high-current tools.
- Do not switch equipment that must never lose power.
- Do not use an indoor plug outdoors.
- Do not exceed the wall outlet, circuit, or plug rating.
- Do not connect a power strip unless the manufacturer and complete load arrangement make it appropriate.
Ratings are model-specific. For example, the Kasa HS100 product page lists 15 A, 100–120 V, and 1.8 kW maximum power for that model only; do not apply those figures to every smart plug. See the HS100 specifications.
