Most conventional 3.5-inch mechanical hard drives contain a strong permanent magnet in the voice-coil actuator assembly. You can usually remove the magnet and its steel backing as a unit with basic hand tools; separating the brittle magnet from the backing is optional and much riskier. Before opening any drive, make sure you own it or are authorized to dismantle it, and address any data-security requirements.
First: identify the drive and deal with its data
This project is for a mechanical hard disk drive (HDD), not a solid-state drive (SSD). A 3.5-inch desktop HDD is generally the easiest target because its actuator hardware is accessible. A 2.5-inch laptop HDD may also contain rare-earth magnets, but they are smaller and the layout varies. An external-drive enclosure could contain either type, so check the drive itself rather than assuming from the case.
If the drive may contain personal, business, financial, medical, or other confidential data, do not treat opening it as secure erasure. Use an appropriate professional or organizational media-sanitization process before salvage. Physical destruction of the platters makes the drive unusable, but casual teardown is not a universal data-destruction procedure. Industrial recycling operations may combine data sanitization with controlled disassembly to recover materials that shredding would mix together. - Torx screwdriver set; T6 and T8 are common, but the correct size depends on the drive.
- Phillips screwdriver, in case the drive uses Phillips fasteners.
- Small flat-blade screwdriver or blunt pry tool, and needle-nose pliers.
- Safety glasses and work gloves for sharp enclosure edges.
- A nonmagnetic tray or container for screws.
- If separating the magnet from its backing: a vice or clamps and locking pliers.
- Cardboard, plastic, or wood spacers and a rigid container for storage.
Work on a stable bench. Keep children, pets, loose steel tools, magnetic-stripe cards, watches, and sensitive electronics away. Do not put fingers between a magnet and a steel object: the magnet can snap shut and pinch skin.

Where the magnet is
Inside the drive, the platters sit on a spindle. The read/write heads ride on an actuator arm, which is moved by a voice-coil motor. The permanent magnet is typically near that motor, attached to a shaped steel or permalloy backing plate. Designs differ; the visible magnet count, fasteners, and bracket arrangement are not identical across manufacturers or generations. The recovered part is a magnet assembly, not purified neodymium. Step-by-step removal
- Remove the enclosure cover. Inspect the top and remove the visible screws, placing them in a tray. Check under labels or small plugs for concealed fasteners. If the cover will not lift, look for another screw or a tightly seated edge rather than forcing it. Screw type and layout vary by model.
- Find the actuator. Identify the platters and spindle, then locate the arm carrying the heads. Follow it to the voice-coil motor and the curved magnet attached to a metal plate.
- Release the bracket. Remove the screws or retaining hardware securing the magnet bracket. Some drives use clips or a bracket integrated with other actuator hardware. Hold the bracket while removing the final fastener, then lift it away slowly. Avoid levering against the platters or spindle.
- Keep the assembly intact unless you need a bare magnet. The backing plate is often useful for mounting and makes the magnet easier to handle. For many workshop uses, there is no benefit in separating it.

Separating the magnet from its backing plate
This is the most failure-prone part of the job. NdFeB magnets are hard but brittle, and their coating can chip or peel. If you need the bare magnet, clamp the steel backing plate in a vice, wear eye protection, and use locking pliers or controlled bending to flex the plate until the adhesive bond releases. Keep hands out of the closing path and ease the magnet away rather than twisting or striking it. A screwdriver or pry bar can slip or fracture the magnet, so avoid uncontrolled leverage. Stop if the magnet cracks or its coating begins to flake.
Do not make household heating with a torch, oven, or heat gun the default method. Heat may reduce magnetization, damage coating or adhesive, release fumes, and create burn or mechanical-failure hazards. Industrial heat-based processing is not a safe home substitute.

Inspect and store it safely
Check for cracks, chipped corners, peeling plating, rust or bubbling beneath the coating, sharp bracket edges, and metal filings. NdFeB material exposed by coating damage can corrode. A damaged piece is not suitable for projects where fragments could contaminate food, medicine, children’s products, or moving machinery. Collect fragments with tools rather than bare fingers; isolate or securely dispose of badly damaged pieces.
- Use cardboard, plastic, or wood spacers between magnets.
- Keep them in a rigid, labeled container in a dry place—not loose in a pocket, drawer, or thin bag.
- Store away from children and pets. Small powerful magnets can cause severe internal injury if swallowed; suspected ingestion requires immediate medical attention. See the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s magnet safety guidance.
- Keep magnets away from cards with magnetic stripes, watches, compasses, hard drives, and other sensitive objects.
- If you have a pacemaker, implantable defibrillator, cochlear implant, or another magnet-sensitive implant, follow the device maker’s precautions and keep strong magnets away from it. The FDA explains how magnets can affect implanted devices.
Useful applications—and limits
A recovered magnet can be useful for holding lightweight tools or templates, retrieving steel screws, making a workshop jig or magnetic catch, or demonstrating magnetic fields. It may also suit a hobby mechanism if its shape and performance fit the design.

Do not assume it has a particular pull force, magnetic grade, temperature rating, or standard dimensions. Those depend on the magnet and how it is used; the curved shape, backing plate, air gap, and target material all affect performance. A salvaged magnet is not a reliable drop-in replacement for a specified engineering part. For a design that needs repeatable force, dimensions, coating, or several matching pieces, buy a magnet with published specifications.

One or two salvaged magnets are mainly valuable for reuse and learning, not for recovering a meaningful amount of pure rare-earth material. If the remaining drive is electronic waste, take it to an appropriate e-waste collection or recycling service rather than putting it in ordinary household rubbish. Industrial systems can combine sanitization and controlled disassembly; they are not equipment a household needs to buy.

Common problems
- The cover sticks: Check again for a hidden screw beneath a label or plug, or a remaining screw of another size. Avoid hammering or aggressive prying, which can bend the lid and create sharp edges.
- The bracket will not lift: Look for another screw, clip, or retaining feature. Remove the bracket as a unit when possible rather than prying against delicate drive parts.
- The magnet cracks: Do not handle sharp pieces barehanded. Collect them with tools and store securely; damaged coating can expose corrosion-prone material.
- The drive is a laptop model: Expect smaller parts and a less convenient layout. The same actuator principle may apply, but size and ease of recovery are not guaranteed.
- The drive has been shredded: The magnet may be mixed with steel and other material. Casual recovery of small fragments is not worthwhile; clean recovery is easiest before shredding.
What not to attempt
Removing the bracket recovers a magnet assembly; it does not extract elemental neodymium. Chemical, hydrogen-based, or metallurgical recovery is a specialized industrial or laboratory process, not a home salvage step. For context, see CSIR-NML’s waste-hard-disk neodymium recovery technology.
