There is no universal smart-thermostat reset. Start with the least destructive option: restart the thermostat for a freeze or temporary glitch, reset only Wi-Fi when your router or password changed, and use a factory reset for ownership changes or persistent configuration problems. A factory reset can erase schedules, preferences, network credentials, account links, and—on some models—HVAC configuration.
Identify the exact brand and model before using a button combination or menu path. If the display is blank or the heating and cooling system does not respond, check power and HVAC equipment before assuming a software reset will help.
Choose the reset that matches the problem

Before you reset
- Find the brand and exact model on the thermostat, wall plate, product label, app or settings screen.
- Record schedules, temperature preferences, fan mode and any installer settings you may need to restore.
- Have your Wi-Fi name and password ready, and confirm the home network works on another device.
- Check that the furnace or air handler has power. Do not pull wires from terminals just to reboot the thermostat.
- If the home is in extreme heat or cold, arrange another way to control the HVAC system before a destructive reset.
- Take extra care with heat pumps, multi-stage systems, humidifiers, dehumidifiers and other accessories; incorrect installer settings can stop equipment from operating.
Restart, Wi-Fi reset or factory reset?
Restart or power cycle
A restart reloads the thermostat software and can refresh a network connection while normally preserving schedules, account association and HVAC configuration. Use it first for a frozen display, a temporary offline message or a minor software glitch. A power cycle is model-specific; never disconnect thermostat wires unless the manufacturer explicitly instructs you to.

This clears wireless-network information so you can enter a new password or select a different network. It is the appropriate response to a changed router or password when the thermostat otherwise controls the HVAC system normally. You may need to reconnect the device in its mobile app.

Factory reset
A factory reset returns the thermostat to an initial setup state. Depending on the model, it can erase schedules, preferences, Wi-Fi credentials, account links, sensors, integrations and installer configuration. Use it for an ownership transfer, persistent configuration corruption or manufacturer-directed troubleshooting—not as the default cure for every offline message.
Verified examples by brand
Google Nest
Google’s menus vary by Nest generation and display type. For a restart, open the thermostat menu, choose Settings, then Restart, and confirm. For a network reset on models that provide it, choose Settings → Reset → Network; then return to network settings, select your Wi-Fi and enter the password. Google’s offline troubleshooting guide and new-network instructions show model-dependent variations.
For a full reset, follow Google’s reset guidance. In scenarios covered there, remove the thermostat from the Google Home or Nest account first, then select Reset or Factory reset on the thermostat and complete setup again. A full “All settings” reset erases thermostat settings; related temperature sensors may not all be erased in the same way. Nest Heat Link units have separate procedures in Google’s Heat Link guide.

Honeywell Home
Honeywell Home has no single reset sequence for every T5, T5+, T6 Pro WiFi, Smart WiFi 9000, T9 or T10. Identify the model and use the official reset instructions. Depending on the model, look under Menu, Advanced, Reset or thermostat-information screens for Wi-Fi, advanced or factory reset options. For a lost connection, try the model’s Wi-Fi reset or reconnection path before a full factory reset; network-band compatibility also varies.
Sensi
- Sensi Smart Thermostat: Press and hold Up, Down and Fan together until the display flashes and reboots.
- Sensi Lite: Press and hold Up, Down and Menu for at least one second, until the display resets.
- Sensi Touch and Touch 2: Open Menu → About thermostat → Factory Reset.
Use Sensi’s model-specific instructions. After resetting, reconnect Wi-Fi and restore the schedule. Sensi says its thermostats may take about 30–60 minutes to fully recalibrate room temperature. Battery-powered Smart and Lite models can be power-cycled by removing the batteries until the screen goes blank, then reinstalling suitable batteries and the cover. ecobee, Amazon, Wyze, Carrier and other models
Do not use another brand’s button combination. Open the manufacturer’s app or thermostat settings and look specifically for Restart, Reboot, Network/Wi-Fi Reset or Factory Reset. Consult the exact owner’s manual; “forget Wi-Fi,” “remove from account” and “factory reset” may be separate actions.
What to do after a reset
- Reconnect to Wi-Fi and add the thermostat to the correct app or account.
- Restore schedules, comfort preferences, fan settings and any room sensors or accessories.
- Reconnect smart-home integrations and automations such as Google Home, Alexa, Apple Home or SmartThings.
- Verify the displayed room temperature and allow any manufacturer-specified settling period.
- Test heating and cooling separately, then confirm fan operation and the correct system mode.
If resetting did not work
Network problem
Restart the modem and router, update the mobile app, and test the thermostat on a phone hotspot if the manufacturer supports that test. A thermostat that works on a hotspot but not your home network may have a router, password, band-compatibility or configuration issue.

Power, battery or wiring problem
A blank screen can result from a tripped breaker, an off furnace or air-handler switch, dead batteries, missing C-wire power, loose wiring, a low-voltage fault or failed thermostat hardware. Check only what you can do safely and follow the model’s instructions.
HVAC-equipment problem
If the thermostat responds but the furnace, air conditioner or heat pump does not, a reset cannot repair a breaker, transformer, compressor, condensate problem, control board or equipment fault. Sensi’s heating and cooling guidance covers power, voltage, wiring and professional escalation.
When to call for help
Contact the manufacturer if setup will not complete, the device repeatedly reboots, it remains locked to another account, or it reports a hardware or equipment error. Contact a qualified HVAC professional when wiring or voltage is unfamiliar, the display stays blank after power checks, or heating and cooling still fail after the thermostat is reset.

Ownership transfer and replacement
For a thermostat left by a previous homeowner or tenant, ask that person to remove it from their account first when possible. Then factory-reset it and claim it in your account. If the display remains dead with confirmed power, the thermostat repeatedly loses power, the model is incompatible with your HVAC system, or its app support is no longer available for that exact product, replacement may be more sensible than repeated resets. Confirm wiring, C-wire needs, heat-pump support and accessory compatibility before buying.

Will resetting a thermostat erase its schedule?
A restart normally preserves the schedule. A Wi-Fi reset usually removes network credentials but not HVAC settings. A factory reset may erase schedules and other configuration, depending on the model.
Can I reset a smart thermostat without Wi-Fi?
Usually, yes: restart and factory-reset controls are generally available on the thermostat itself. You will still need Wi-Fi or another supported connection to complete cloud setup afterward.
Should I restart or factory-reset my thermostat?
Restart first for a freeze or temporary glitch. Use a network reset for changed Wi-Fi credentials. Factory-reset only for ownership transfer, persistent configuration problems or manufacturer-directed troubleshooting.
How do I reset a thermostat left by the previous homeowner?

Why is the thermostat blank after resetting?
Check the HVAC breaker, furnace or air-handler switch, batteries, C-wire power and wiring. A blank screen can indicate an HVAC power or hardware fault, not a need for another reset.
Why does it still say offline after a reset?
Confirm the Wi-Fi works, restart the router and thermostat, re-enter the network credentials, and check compatibility with the router’s security and frequency settings. Persistent failure may require manufacturer support.
Can I reset it without removing the wires?
Yes, use the on-screen reset or the manufacturer’s documented power-cycle method. Do not remove terminal wires merely to reboot a thermostat.
How long does a thermostat take to recalibrate?
Timing is model-specific. Sensi advises allowing about 30–60 minutes after a reset; do not apply that period universally.

Do I need to reset the router too?
Not automatically. Restart the router when the network itself is unreliable or the thermostat remains offline after checking its settings.
What if the thermostat works manually but not in the app?
The HVAC control may be fine while the account, Wi-Fi or cloud connection is not. Reconnect the network and app, check account ownership and test the home network before factory-resetting.
