To factory-reset a Google Home or Nest Mini, use the speaker’s physical controls. You cannot factory-reset these speakers by voice or from the Google Home app. Identify the model first, because the reset control differs between the original Google Home, Google Home Mini (1st generation), and Google Nest Mini (2nd generation). A factory reset is irreversible: it erases the speaker’s device configuration, disconnects it from the members of the Google Home, and requires setup again.
Google recommends restarting and troubleshooting the speaker before using a factory reset. If you are selling or giving it away, however, a physical factory reset is the appropriate final step.
Before you factory-reset the speaker
- Confirm that the speaker is connected to its normal power adapter and a working outlet.
- Check that the microphone switch has not accidentally been turned off.
- Restart it by unplugging it, waiting briefly, and plugging it back in.
- Check the Google Home app for the speaker’s status and try the relevant Wi-Fi, discovery, Assistant, or playback troubleshooting.
Do not factory-reset merely to rename the speaker, move it to another room, or make ordinary app-level changes. Those tasks can usually be handled in the Google Home app. Also note that removing a device from the app is not the same as erasing the hardware.

“Google Home” can refer to the original speaker, the Home Mini, or the Google Home app. Do not use the Nest Mini top-center method on a first-generation Home Mini.

Reset a Google Nest Mini (2nd generation)
These are Google’s current physical reset instructions for the second-generation Nest Mini:
- Leave the Nest Mini plugged in.
- Slide the microphone switch on the side to off. The status lights should turn orange.
- Press and hold the center of the top, where the lights are located.
- After approximately five seconds, the reset begins.
- Continue holding for approximately ten more seconds, until the speaker confirms by sound that it is resetting.
- Release the control and wait for the reset to finish before beginning setup again.
The timing is approximate. The important point is to keep holding after the warning or initial reset indication; releasing too soon may cancel the process.
Reset a Google Home Mini (1st generation)
- Keep the Home Mini connected to power.
- Turn the speaker over and locate the small factory-reset button on the underside, below the power cable and near the etched circle.
- Press and hold that button.
- After about five seconds, the reset begins or the speaker gives its warning.
- Continue holding for about ten additional seconds, until you hear the confirmation sound.
- Wait for the reset to complete, then set it up as a new device.
Holding the top center is not the official reset procedure for the first-generation Home Mini. Use the underside button instead.

- Leave the speaker connected to power.
- Locate the microphone-mute button on the rear.
- Press and hold the button for approximately 15 seconds.
- Keep holding until the speaker announces that it is resetting.
- Wait for the process to finish before setting it up again.
What a factory reset erases
A factory reset returns the speaker to its default factory state. It clears the device’s local configuration, including its existing setup, and disconnects the speaker from the members of the Google Home. The reset cannot be undone.
It does not mean that your entire Google account or every cloud record is deleted. Afterward, you will need to configure the speaker again with the intended Google account and Wi-Fi network, and may need to restore room assignments, services, routines, speaker groups, and smart-home integrations.

Set up the speaker after resetting
- Plug in the reset speaker and wait for it to finish starting.
- Open the current Google Home app on an Android phone, iPhone, or tablet.
- Follow the app’s current setup instructions to add or discover a new device.
- Connect it to the intended Wi-Fi network and Google account.
- Reconfigure any room assignment, music services, routines, speaker groups, or connected smart-home devices you want to use.
Google Home menu names can change between app versions, platforms, and accounts, so follow the labels shown in your current app rather than relying on one permanent menu path. Immediately after a reset, failure to find the old device entry can be normal: the speaker is no longer associated with the former home and must be discovered as a new device.

Reset versus restart versus removing a device

If the reset does not work
No orange lights on a Nest Mini
Confirm that the side microphone switch is fully in the off position. Orange lights are the visual indication that the microphone has been switched off. Also verify that the speaker is receiving stable power.
No reset warning or confirmation sound
You may be using the wrong model’s method, releasing too soon, or pressing the wrong area. On a Nest Mini, hold the illuminated top center only after switching off the microphone. On a Home Mini, use the underside reset button. On the original Google Home, use the rear microphone button. Continue holding through both the warning and final confirmation.
The speaker will not power on
A reset cannot complete without power. Use the normal power adapter and a known-working outlet. A factory reset will not repair a defective adapter, damaged speaker, dead microphone, or other hardware failure.

The app cannot discover the speaker afterward
This can be expected after a successful reset because the speaker must be set up again as a new device. Confirm that it has finished resetting, then follow the current Google Home app setup flow. If discovery still fails, use Google’s official reset and connection troubleshooting guidance rather than relying on unofficial workarounds.

Repeat the correct model-specific procedure and hold the control until the confirmation sound. If the speaker repeatedly fails despite stable power and the correct method, the problem may not be a recoverable configuration issue; consult Google support.
Before selling or giving away the speaker
- Save any information or configuration details you need.
- Review the device in the Google Home app and remove or reorganize it as appropriate.
- Perform the physical factory reset for the correct model.
- Wait for the reset to complete before handing it over.
- Do not give the recipient your Wi-Fi credentials or Google account information.
A secondhand buyer should also perform—or ask the seller to perform—a physical factory reset before setting up the speaker on a new account and network. Deleting the device only from the previous owner’s app should not be treated as a substitute.
If resetting does not solve the problem
Resetting addresses device configuration; it does not guarantee a fix for every Wi-Fi problem or any hardware fault. If the speaker remains unreliable after a correct reset and clean setup, replacement may be more practical than repeated resets. Google’s current U.S. Store page lists a newer Google Home Speaker at an observed price of $99.99, while Apple lists the HomePod mini at $129. Prices, availability, promotions, and subscription offers can change, so check the official vendor pages before buying. A Google replacement is generally the more natural fit for people who already use Google Home, Nest, or Google Cast; a HomePod mini is aimed at people invested in Apple devices and services.
