You can usually replace a conventional wired doorbell with a hardwired Ring using the two existing low-voltage wires—but first confirm the exact Ring model, transformer rating and indoor-chime requirements. Ring models do not all use the same wiring arrangement, and some bypass the old chime entirely. Turn off the doorbell circuit at the breaker and verify it is off before touching wires.
Check compatibility before you begin
A typical wired doorbell has a low-voltage AC transformer, two wires at the exterior button and an indoor chime. The transformer may be near the chime, in a basement, garage, attic, utility area or electrical junction box. Read its label for both voltage and volt-ampere (VA) rating; an old wired button does not guarantee the circuit can power a Ring. Ring warns that an incompatible transformer or chime can damage a device. See its hardwiring requirements.
Product names have changed: the older Video Doorbell Pro is now called Wired Doorbell Plus, and the older Video Doorbell Pro 2 is now called Wired Doorbell Pro. Check the name on the box, device or in the Ring app, then follow that model’s instructions; Ring’s wiring diagrams explain which older instructions still apply. The requirements below distinguish the models covered here:

For the current Plus and Pro chime limitations, check Ring’s in-home chime compatibility list and the product-specific instructions. Older Plus or Pro installations may have different compatible-chime arrangements; use the guide for the exact model and generation.

Decide whether to reuse the transformer
- Reuse it if its label clearly shows that its voltage and VA fall within the range for your Ring model and the circuit works reliably.
- Replace it if it is under-rated, damaged, unmarked or associated with unexplained power problems. Use a doorbell transformer specified for the model—not one intended for landscape or halogen lighting.
- Get qualified help if replacement involves opening a line-voltage junction box, or if local code, permits or your comfort level call for an electrician. The doorbell wires are low voltage, but the transformer’s supply side is not. Ring’s transformer installation guidance covers this separate work.
Check the rest of the installation
- Identify whether the indoor chime is mechanical or electronic and whether it serves a front door, rear door or both. Multiple chimes, doorbells or transformers need a model-specific wiring diagram.
- Confirm the existing wires reach the Ring terminals without strain and are not corroded or damaged.
- Check Wi-Fi at the door; weak signal can cause delayed alerts or offline status even when the wiring provides power.
- Consider the mounting surface and camera angle. Ring’s optional Wedge Kit adjusts vertical angle; a Corner Kit turns the view toward an approach path. See the Wired Doorbell Plus product page for accessory details.
Gather tools and materials
- Your Ring doorbell and the model’s included mounting hardware, jumper or chime kit.
- The Ring screwdriver or a suitable small screwdriver; a drill and masonry bit if needed for brick or concrete.
- Appropriate wall anchors for masonry, concrete or stucco.
- Masking tape or wire labels, plus a low-voltage AC tester or multimeter.
- Wire nuts if the model instructions call for capping or modifying chime wiring.
- A compatible transformer if the existing one fails the rating check, or an alert option such as Ring Chime if the old chime will be bypassed.
If there is no usable doorbell wiring, a Ring Plug-In Adapter may be an alternative for supported models, provided there is a suitable indoor outlet and a route for its cable. Check the adapter’s supported-model information; it is not a substitute for checking compatibility.
Turn off power and record the existing wiring
- Find the doorbell circuit at the breaker or fuse box and switch it off. Do not rely on the low voltage at the button as a reason to skip this step.
- Use an appropriate tester to verify that the exterior doorbell wires are no longer energized before handling them. If you cannot identify or verify the circuit, stop and get qualified help.
- Photograph the old button wiring, indoor chime terminals and transformer label before disconnecting anything. Label wires if there is more than one doorbell or terminal arrangement.
- Check that the transformer label matches your Ring model’s voltage and VA requirements. Do not proceed on the assumption that an unlabeled transformer is compatible.
Ring’s Video Doorbell Wired installation guide also directs installers to switch off power before removing the existing doorbell. Local electrical rules may require a permit or qualified electrician.

Remove the old doorbell
- Remove the old button’s cover or faceplate and expose its terminal screws.
- Secure the two wires against the wall with tape or a clip so they cannot slip back into the opening.
- Loosen the terminal screws and disconnect the wires. Keep hold of both.
- Remove the old mounting screws. Straighten and clean the wire ends if necessary without cutting them shorter than needed.
If a wire falls into the wall, keep power off. Retrieve it only with a suitable flexible tool if you can do so safely; do not probe an energized or uncertain circuit with a metal tool. If access requires opening the wall, call a professional.

Fit the mounting bracket
- Hold the bracket over the old opening or chosen mounting position and check that the camera will see the approach and visitors.
- If needed, use a Wedge Kit to alter the vertical view or a Corner Kit to turn the camera toward the walkway.
- Mark the screw holes. For masonry, drill appropriate pilot holes and install the supplied anchors.
- Feed the existing wires through the bracket opening before fastening the bracket.
Connect the two wires
- Loosen the two terminal screws on the Ring doorbell.
- Place one existing doorbell wire under each terminal and tighten the screws securely.
- For the standard two-wire AC connection, polarity does not matter: either wire can go to either Ring terminal. Ring’s wiring diagrams show the model-specific arrangement.
- Check that no bare copper can touch the other terminal, the mounting plate or nearby metalwork.
Set up the indoor chime for your model
“Existing chime” means the mechanical or electronic chime already wired inside the home. Ring Chime and Chime Plus are separate plug-in alert devices; Chime Kit Mini and the Pro Power Kit are wiring components, not the same thing as a Ring Chime. Do not choose wiring based on the word “wired” alone.

Video Doorbell Wired
This model’s included jumper bypasses the existing chime; the old chime will not operate in the ordinary configuration. With power off, remove the chime cover, identify its TRANS and FRONT terminals, and connect the supplied jumper between them as shown in Ring’s wiring diagram. Follow the app’s chime setup flow. For an audible indoor alert, use phone notifications or a compatible Ring Chime.
Wired Doorbell Plus and Wired Doorbell Pro
Some older installations use a compatible chime and the appropriate Pro Power Kit. Current 2K/4K models, including Wired Doorbell Plus (2nd Gen) and Wired Doorbell Pro (3rd Gen), are not compatible with ordinary existing in-home chimes under Ring’s current guidance. Follow the instructions for your specific model and generation; where its instructions call for bypassing the old chime, use the provided kit and set the chime type to None or No Chime in the app as directed. Ring’s Pro Power Kit V2 instructions explain its terminal connections. Do not ring the button until you have updated the chime setting if the instructions require it.

Choose an indoor alert
If the existing chime is bypassed or incompatible, use phone notifications or a supported Ring Chime, Chime Plus or included Chime Kit Mini, as appropriate to the model. A Ring Chime or Chime Plus needs an outlet; the Chime Kit Mini is not a plug-in alert device. Confirm model support before buying an accessory.

- Tuck excess wire into the opening without sharply bending, crushing or trapping it.
- Attach the Ring unit to its bracket and install the specified faceplate and security screw, if included. Use only the supplied screws specified for the device; incorrect screws can damage it or create a fire hazard.
- Restore power at the breaker.
- In the Ring app, choose Set Up a Device or the current device-setup control, scan the QR code or enter the device code, and follow the prompts to connect Wi-Fi and name the device. App labels may change between versions.
- Test Live View, press the doorbell button, and check two-way audio, motion detection, phone notifications and the selected indoor alert.
- Once basic operation is confirmed, adjust motion zones and notification settings.
Troubleshoot common problems
The Ring does not power on
- Confirm the correct breaker is back on.
- Check that both low-voltage wires are clamped firmly under the Ring terminals and that there is no corrosion or breakage.
- Recheck the transformer’s voltage and VA against the exact model requirement, and confirm it serves the doorbell circuit.
- Review the model-specific jumper, chime bypass or Pro Power Kit wiring against Ring’s power troubleshooting guidance.
- If the transformer is unsuitable or the device still has no power, have the transformer or circuit checked rather than trying a lighting transformer.
The existing chime no longer rings
This can be expected: Video Doorbell Wired bypasses the old chime, and current 2K/4K Wired Doorbell Plus and Pro models do not support ordinary existing in-home chimes. Check the model-specific compatibility list and use a supported Ring alert or phone notifications.

The chime buzzes or rings continuously
Turn off power before changing wiring. Recheck the bypass or Pro Power Kit connections, confirm the chime is supported, and check the app’s chime-type setting. An incompatible chime or underpowered transformer may also cause trouble. Do not keep testing a setup that buzzes, overheats or makes unusual transformer noise.
The Ring restarts, goes offline or shows intermittent power
Check transformer capacity, loose terminals, damaged or thin wiring, corrosion at the exterior connection and the chime wiring arrangement. Once power and startup are stable, check Wi-Fi signal separately; weak wireless coverage can look like an electrical fault.
Notifications do not arrive, or video is delayed
If Live View works but alerts do not, review the app’s notification and motion settings, including the selected motion zones. If the doorbell is offline or video is delayed, test Wi-Fi at the door and router placement after confirming the device has stable power.

The wires are too short or have fallen into the wall
Do not pull hard on short wires or splice them without a suitable, code-compliant method. If they have disappeared into the wall, keep power off and use a flexible retrieval tool only if the route is accessible and safe. Call an electrician or doorbell installer if the wires cannot be recovered without opening the wall.
When to call an electrician
- The transformer needs replacement, is inaccessible or is inside a line-voltage junction box you are not qualified to open.
- The wiring is unidentified, damaged, shared across multiple doorbells or chimes, or does not match the model’s published diagram.
- You cannot confidently isolate and verify power at the breaker.
- Your local code requires a permit or professional installation.
Replacing the low-voltage button is a different job from replacing the transformer: the latter involves the electrical supply side and should not be treated as routine doorbell wiring.
