Shovel off loose snow, apply a small amount of the right deicer to loosen the ice, then scrape away the slush. Use sand or another abrasive for traction while you work; it will not melt the ice. The safest fast approach is to pair limited chemical treatment with physical removal, not to try to dissolve a thick sheet of ice.
Clear snow and make a safe working lane
- Move vehicles and choose a route. Park elsewhere if possible so you can clear the driveway without working around tires or a vehicle you could accidentally strike.
- Add traction where you will stand. Spread a little sand or non-clumping litter underfoot before you begin. These materials improve grip but do not melt ice. UNH Extension also lists wood shavings, ash and bird seed as traction aids (UNH Extension).
- Shovel or blow away loose snow. Removing snow first lets deicer reach the bonded ice and reduces how much product you need. Iowa State University Extension recommends removing as much snow and ice as possible before using deicer to loosen what remains (Iowa State Extension).
Choose a deicer for the temperature and surface
Deicers work at different rates as temperatures drop. Rock salt is common and relatively inexpensive, but its performance falls sharply in severe cold. California’s Department of Transportation describes sodium chloride as very effective above 25°F and ineffective below 10°F (Caltrans). At very low temperatures, rely more on scraping and traction than on rock salt.
| Material | Useful for | Limits and cautions |
|---|---|---|
| Sodium chloride (rock salt) | Routine deicing in moderate cold | Caltrans says it is very effective above 25°F and ineffective below 10°F. Chlorides can harm plants and water quality and corrode metal (Caltrans; FHWA). |
| Calcium chloride | Quick action and colder conditions | It dissolves easily and acts quickly, but it is still a chloride deicer with corrosion and vegetation risks. Follow the product label (Iowa State Extension; FHWA). |
| Magnesium chloride | An alternative chloride deicer | Leaves chloride residues, so use only the minimum effective amount (FHWA; Oregon DOT). |
| Calcium magnesium acetate (CMA) or potassium acetate | Situations where reducing corrosion or pollution is a priority | Generally less polluting, but often more expensive and may have less melting power. FHWA lists them among anti-icing materials (FHWA). |
| Sand or non-clumping litter | Immediate traction, including in very cold conditions | Does not melt ice. Sweep it up when practical to avoid loose material and clogged drains (GOV.UK; UNH Extension). |
Apply only enough to loosen the bonded ice
- Read the package directions and spread the product evenly over the icy area. Do not assume that more product will clear the driveway faster.
- Aim to break the ice’s bond with the pavement, not to melt the entire slab. California and Oregon transportation agencies both recommend using the lowest effective application rate (Caltrans; Oregon DOT).
- Give the deicer time to work. When meltwater channels appear and the ice begins to release, scrape it up with a shovel or ice scraper.
- Remove the loosened ice and slush from the driveway. Reapply sparingly only to patches that remain bonded; leaving slush can allow it to refreeze.
Why rock salt slows down in extreme cold
Salt’s ice-melting capacity depends on temperature. The North Dakota Department of Transportation’s 2026 guidance gives a comparison of 46.3 pounds of ice melted per pound of salt at 30°F versus 3.2 pounds at −6°F (North Dakota DOT). Those figures illustrate the steep drop in performance in colder conditions; they are not a guarantee for a particular residential driveway.
A separate 2026 North Carolina Department of Transportation page says a 23% salt brine lowers water’s freezing temperature to about 18°F (North Carolina DOT). That figure describes controlled transportation operations, not a reason to mix or pour homemade brine on a driveway. Follow the directions for a packaged residential product. New York DOT describes pretreatment with brine as a way to reduce ice bonding, use less salt and make plowing easier (New York DOT).
#1 Best Overall
- Environmental Consideration - This advanced formula is notably less corrosive to concrete than traditional ice melt. The environmentally conscious choice for responsible winter safety management. Apply 2-4 ounces per sq yrd
- Versatile Usage - Perfect for all outdoor surfaces including driveways, sidewalks, steps, balconies, patios, and walkways. The effective formula works in temperatures below zero down to -15, providing reliable performance throughout winter
- Use It Ahead Of Time - This is easy to apply with a shaker or straight from the bag; It is an affordable way to prevent ice formation and should be spread prior to snowfall to make shoveling easier; Follow instructions on the bag for best results
- SAFETY-MAX FORMULA Prevents Refreezing: Once your sidewalk, steps, driveway, or parking lot are clear, they will not refreeze; This adds safety for cars and pedestrians in extreme cold weather
Protect concrete, vehicles, plants and drainage
- Keep applications small. Chloride runoff can contaminate groundwater, while salt can corrode vehicles and metal structures. Iowa State warns that deicing salts can also damage automobiles, concrete and landscape plants (Iowa State Extension; FHWA).
- Move salty snow away from landscaping. Avoid piling treated snow around trees and shrubs or where meltwater runs into a drain or planting bed.
- Clean up residues. Sweep up leftover pellets and sand when practical. After thaw, Iowa State recommends flushing accumulated salt from soil if needed.
- Account for site conditions. Pavement, drainage, temperature, pets and nearby landscaping affect the risks. Follow the product label and any local rules.
Do not use hot or plain water
Pouring water over the driveway can create another slick layer when it refreezes. GOV.UK advises: “do not use water – it might refreeze and turn to black ice” (GOV.UK). Use scraping and a suitable deicer instead, with sand or another abrasive for footing.
