Yes, solar panels can be recycled—but they should not go in a curbside recycling bin. The right end-of-life route depends on the panel’s technology, condition, quantity, and location. Keep a safe, working panel in service when practical; otherwise consider reuse or refurbishment before arranging specialist recycling. Use compliant disposal only for material that cannot be recovered.
This guide is primarily U.S.-focused. Waste rules and available services differ elsewhere, so readers outside the United States should consult their national or local waste authority.
What “recycling” a solar panel actually means
Solar-panel end-of-life management includes several different outcomes:
- Direct reuse: installing a functioning module in another system.
- Refurbishment: testing, repairing, and redeploying or reselling it.
- Component recovery: separating glass, aluminum, copper, silicon, silver, polymers, and semiconductor materials.
- Downcycling: recovering bulk material for a lower-value use.
- Disposal: sending unrecoverable material or residues to a permitted facility.
“Recyclable” does not mean every part becomes a new solar panel. Conventional processes commonly recover glass, aluminum, and copper, while polymers, silicon, and trace metals may be recovered at lower purity, lost, or sent for separate treatment. Actual recovery varies by technology, facility, contamination, and economics. EPA explains the materials and processes involved.

When should a panel be recycled?
Many panels are designed to operate for more than 25 years, but that is not a mandatory replacement date. Weather exposure, degradation, installation quality, maintenance, damage, and replacement economics determine actual service life. NREL commonly uses about 30 years as a planning assumption for photovoltaic-module life.
Recycle or obtain a professional end-of-life assessment when a module has been damaged by hail, wind, fire, impact, flooding, or mishandling; has severe electrical or performance failure; is removed during reroofing, remodeling, repowering, or decommissioning; is replaced under warranty; or is unsafe to reinstall.
An old panel is not automatically waste. If it still produces useful power, testing may support a second life on an off-grid cabin, shed, water pump, remote-monitoring system, educational installation, or small charging application. Electrical, fire, building, and interconnection requirements still apply.

What solar panels are made of
Crystalline-silicon modules
Most installed modules contain tempered glass, an aluminum frame, silicon cells, copper conductors and ribbons, small quantities of silver and other conductive metals, polymer encapsulants, a backsheet, and a junction box with cables. Glass is about 75% of the weight of a typical panel, and glass and aluminum are generally the easiest materials to recover through established industrial systems. DOE says more than 85% of a PV module consists of familiar recyclable materials such as glass and aluminum; that does not mean 85% is recovered by every commercial process.

Thin-film modules
Thin-film products may use cadmium telluride, copper indium gallium selenide, or related semiconductor materials. Their processing can involve recovery of cadmium, tellurium, glass, copper, and other materials, and is not interchangeable with every crystalline-silicon route.
Identify the technology before requesting service. Read the label on the rear of the module, check installation invoices and system documents, search the manufacturer’s model information, or ask the original installer.
How solar-panel recycling works
- Collection and inspection: The recycler confirms manufacturer, model, technology, quantity, condition, and ownership, then determines whether reuse is viable.
- Safe removal: A qualified solar contractor or electrician de-energizes and disconnects the system. Modules can generate electricity in sunlight.
- Packaging and transport: Panels are palletized or otherwise protected against breakage and sharp glass, following the recycler’s instructions.
- Pre-processing: Aluminum frames, junction boxes, and cables may be removed.
- Separation: Mechanical, thermal, or chemical methods separate glass from polymer layers and cells.
- Recovery and purification: Depending on the facility and module, glass, aluminum, copper, silicon, silver, tin, lead, cadmium, or tellurium may be recovered.
- Residual management: Polymer, glass fines, dust, contaminated material, and other residues require appropriate downstream handling.
How to recycle solar panels: a homeowner and contractor checklist
- Record the module details. Photograph the label and note manufacturer, model, technology, quantity, dimensions, and damage.
- Decide whether it still has a safe second life. Ask a qualified professional to test output, insulation, connectors, junction box, frame, and compatibility with the intended inverter and racking.
- Contact the installer and manufacturer. They may coordinate removal, warranty replacement, take-back, or an approved downstream route. A manufacturer program usually applies only to its own modules and may charge for logistics.
- Check local and state requirements. Contact the municipal solid-waste agency and state environmental agency, particularly for damaged or potentially hazardous modules.
- Find a facility that accepts the exact module. Use EPA’s solar-panel resources, the Earth911 search directory, the DOE Solar Photovoltaic Manufacturing Map, or SEIA resources. A directory listing is not a guarantee of acceptance, price, or regulatory approval.
- Get a complete quote. Confirm whether it includes deinstallation, labor, pallets, loading, freight, testing, permits, and residual disposal.
- Arrange professional removal and transport. Do not break modules to reduce shipping volume, and do not handle energized, wet, burned, or unstable panels yourself.
- Obtain final documentation. Request a certificate of recycling or destruction, material-diversion information, and identification of downstream processors where relevant.
Can solar panels go in curbside recycling?
Usually not. Ordinary materials-recovery facilities are not equipped for large, heavy laminated modules, tempered-glass breakage, electrical components, encapsulants, backsheets, or potentially regulated metals. A panel placed in a household bin may be rejected or damage sorting equipment. Use curbside collection only if the local program explicitly says it accepts the specific panels.

There is no single answer for every model. Discarded panels are solid waste under federal law, and some contain lead, cadmium, or other metals at concentrations that can cause them to fail the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act’s toxicity-characteristic leaching procedure (TCLP). Other panels pass. The result depends on composition, testing, and state requirements.

Do not assume that all solar panels are toxic waste—or that all are harmless. Do not crush, dismantle, or burn modules. Have a recycler or qualified waste professional determine the handling route. Federal requirements and state programs differ; EPA’s state list is not comprehensive. The regulatory information in this article was checked August 18, 2026; verify current requirements with your state environmental agency before shipment.
What recycling costs
There is no dependable universal per-panel price. DOE reports that U.S. recycling has generally cost more than landfill disposal, although larger volumes, improved technology, and policy could change the economics. Quotes commonly depend on:
- number of modules and panel technology;
- condition, including breakage or fire damage;
- distance, freight, pallets, and loading;
- removal labor and access equipment;
- TCLP sampling or other testing;
- whether inverters, batteries, cables, or racking are included;
- residential versus commercial volume; and
- state and local compliance requirements.
The lowest processing fee may not be the lowest total cost if it excludes removal, packaging, freight, testing, or residue management. First Solar offers a pay-as-you-go service for First Solar modules but states that owners remain responsible for removal, packaging, and logistics and that costs vary by region. SOLARCYCLE describes commercial pricing as volume-based. Neither publishes a universal consumer rate.
Damaged, broken, fire-damaged, or flooded modules
Some specialist recyclers accept construction breakage, storm damage, warranty failures, and other damaged modules, but acceptance must be confirmed in advance. Cracked glass can cut workers; fire can compromise encapsulants and wiring; flooding can leave systems electrically dangerous; and chemical contamination may require a specialized assessment.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Other solar-system equipment follows different waste streams
- Inverters and power electronics: Often handled through electronics or e-waste programs.
- Racking: Usually scrap metal when free of problematic contamination.
- Cables and wiring: Commonly managed as copper-containing electrical material.
- Batteries: Require battery-specific recycling and transport procedures; lithium batteries present fire risks.
- Transformers: May need a specialized commercial recycler.
When decommissioning a complete system, request a plan for all components rather than treating “solar recycling” as a panel-only service.
How to choose a responsible recycler
Ask these questions before signing:
- Do you accept this exact model and technology?
- Do you accept residential quantities, and is there a minimum load?
- Will you handle cracked, fire-damaged, flooded, or contaminated modules?
- Who disconnects, removes, pallets, loads, and transports the panels?
- Are freight, testing, permits, and residual handling included?
- Are your facilities permitted or otherwise compliant in the relevant jurisdiction?
- What happens to glass, aluminum, silicon, polymers, and specialty metals?
- Do you use downstream processors, and can you identify them?
- Will you issue a certificate of recycling or destruction?
- What does any recovery percentage mean—mass, material value, or a particular product line?
- How long is the quotation valid?
Company claims require context. First Solar reports recovering more than 90% of materials from its own module stream. SOLARCYCLE advertises recovery of up to 97% of module value. These are company-reported figures, not an industry-wide recovery rate.
Reuse versus recycling: a practical decision
| Option | Best reason to choose it | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Continue operating | Avoids premature waste and replacement cost | Not practical after severe damage or failure |
| Repair | Preserves existing equipment | Parts and labor may be unavailable |
| Reuse or refurbishment | Retains energy-generating function and embodied materials | Requires testing, code compliance, and a willing buyer or user |
| Recycling | Recovers materials and avoids unnecessary landfill disposal | Often has higher logistics and processing costs |
| Compliant disposal | Provides a route where recovery is unavailable | Loses recoverable materials and may trigger hazardous-waste obligations |
