For garden forget-me-not (Myosotis sylvatica), choose a partly shaded spot with soil that stays moist but drains well, then sow seed at a time that gives seedlings a chance to establish before winter. It is usually grown as a biennial, so expect spring to early-summer flowers rather than blooms immediately after sowing. Check the botanical name on the packet: water forget-me-not is a different species with different site needs.
Choose the right forget-me-not
This guide covers garden forget-me-not, Myosotis sylvatica, a flowering plant for garden beds and containers. The common name can also refer to other species. For example, water forget-me-not (Myosotis palustris) is suited to wet pool margins or shallow water, not the ordinary moist, well-drained bed described here. Where to plant it
Pick partial shade and soil that holds moisture without becoming waterlogged. The Royal Horticultural Society lists moist but well-drained soil and partial shade for M. sylvatica. North Carolina State University Extension notes that it can tolerate full sun to part shade, with afternoon shade beneficial in hot summer climates. In a hot location, favor a spot protected from the strongest afternoon sun.

When and how to sow seeds
Garden forget-me-not is propagated by seed. Sow early enough for young plants to establish before winter, adjusting the timing to your local climate and frost dates. University of Maine Cooperative Extension recommends sowing by mid-summer in its regional context; that is not a universal calendar deadline. Its August 31, 2023 guidance on sowing for next year’s blooms explains the regional recommendation.
- Check the packet for the botanical name Myosotis sylvatica and follow its sowing directions.
- Sow at a time that allows seedlings to establish before winter in your area; use local frost dates and climate to adapt regional advice.
- Choose a partly shaded bed or container with moist, well-drained soil, and water during dry spells to maintain even moisture.
- Allow plants to grow through their first season; the usual biennial pattern means flowering is generally expected the following spring or early summer.
What to expect from flowering and the life cycle
Myosotis sylvatica is usually grown as a biennial and flowers in spring to early summer. It may not flower in the season it is sown. The RHS gives a typical maturity range of one to two years, while its profile for the named Sylva Series cultivar describes maturity in a year. Timing therefore varies; do not assume every seed lot follows one fixed schedule.

Manage self-seeding and local spread
After flowering, remove plants if you want to reduce self-seeding. If you leave them in place, they may set seed and produce seedlings in a later season. Spread concerns depend on species and location: University of Maine Cooperative Extension notes that forget-me-not is considered invasive in many places and identifies water forget-me-not on Maine’s invasive advisory list. Before planting where spread is a concern, consult your local invasive-species authority rather than assuming every forget-me-not is invasive everywhere.
