An even wall finish depends on three things: a clean, sound, dry surface; tools suited to the wall’s texture; and rolling into each cut-in edge before it dries. Prepare the room first, use primer when the surface or paint system calls for it, and follow the product label for drying and recoating.
Gather the tools and protect the room
Set out an angled brush, roller frame, roller covers suited to the wall, paint tray, drop cloths, painter’s tape, and supplies for cleaning and repairing the surface. Primer and repair materials may be needed depending on the wall. A branded kit is not required.
- Move or cover furniture and protect the floor with drop cloths.
- Use painter’s tape where masking is appropriate. Run it in longer lengths and press the edge down firmly.
- Have a damp sponge and mild soap available for wall cleaning, plus suitable materials to repair holes or cracks.
Prepare the wall before painting
Paint adheres and looks more even on a clean, sound, dry surface. Remove loose paint and repair holes or cracks before applying the topcoat. Sherwin-Williams’ How to Prep Walls for Painting recommends cleaning grime, dust, cobwebs, and stains with lukewarm water and mild soap, rinsing with a damp sponge, and letting the wall dry.
- Check the wall for loose coating, damage, grime, and stains.
- Remove loose paint and repair holes or cracks. Do not casually sand or scrape older paint in a pre-1978 US home; see the lead-safety guidance below first.
- Wash the wall with lukewarm water and mild soap, then rinse with a damp sponge.
- Let the wall dry before priming or painting.
- Cover the floor and furniture, and apply and firmly press painter’s tape where needed.
Decide whether the wall needs primer
Primer depends on the wall and the paint system, not simply on whether the wall has been painted before. It can be important on repaired or bare areas, stains, and other challenging surfaces. Check the paint and primer labels for compatibility and their drying and recoat directions.

Sherwin-Williams’ preparation guidance recommends tinted primer when painting a darker color. Treat that as the manufacturer’s advice for the situations it covers, not a universal requirement. The product directions for your chosen coating system should guide the decision.
Choose a roller cover for the wall texture
The roller nap should fit the surface: a shorter nap is suited to smoother walls, while a deeper nap reaches the texture of rougher or stippled walls. Sherwin-Williams gives these ranges in its wall-preparation guidance:

Cutting in means brushing a narrow band where a roller cannot easily reach, such as along ceiling edges, trim, baseboards, and corners. Use an angled brush, then roll into the band while it is still wet. Blending the brushwork and rollerwork before the edge dries helps avoid a visible boundary.

- Use the angled brush to paint a narrow band along edges and corners.
- Load the roller according to the paint and roller instructions, then begin in a dry area of the wall.
- Roll in overlapping passes, working back toward the still-wet cut-in. Sherwin-Williams describes an N-pattern in its How to Paint a Room guidance.
- On a large wall, work in smaller sections so you can roll into each wet edge before it dries.
Keep the pattern consistent and overlap adjacent passes rather than leaving gaps between them. If an edge dries before you reach it, do not keep brushing or rolling over tacky paint; follow the coating label for how to proceed.
Respect drying and recoat directions
There is no single drying time or coat count that applies to every wall and paint. Both depend on the product and conditions. Read the current paint label for drying and recoat times, and follow its directions before applying another coat or returning the room to use.

Check for lead risk before disturbing old paint in a US home
In the United States, homes built before 1978 are more likely to contain lead-based paint. Disturbing it can create hazardous dust and chips. Before scraping, sanding, or carrying out other renovation, repair, or painting work that disturbs old coating, consult the US Environmental Protection Agency’s current lead-safe renovation steps and its consumer guidance.

The EPA states: “If you decide to hire a contractor to work on your pre-1978 home, the RRP Rule requires them to be lead-safe certified.” Rule coverage and exceptions are specific; consult the EPA’s contractor guidance for the applicable requirements. Do not assume an ordinary dust mask makes lead work safe.
