For a routed wooden sign with a bare face, spray paint into the recessed letters from several angles, let it dry fully, then sand or plane away the paint on the face. Use light passes—1/64 inch or less—to limit tear-out around the lettering. Plastic, Plexiglas and reverse-engraved plates need different approaches, so identify the sign material and construction before choosing a paint or cleanup method.
Choose the filling method by sign material

How to paint recessed letters in a wooden sign
The spray-and-sand-back method suits a routed wood sign when you want color in the recesses but clean wood on the face. It depends on being able to remove a thin layer from that face; do not use it on plastic or metal without material-specific guidance.
- Check the finish plan. Make sure the face is intended to remain bare beneath any clear finish, rather than retaining paint across the whole surface.
- Spray the recessed letters. Aim from several angles so paint reaches the character sidewalls. Apply additional coats if needed for coverage.
- Let the paint dry fully. Do not sand or plane while it is still wet or tacky.
- Remove the face overpaint carefully. Use a planer, drum sander or portable sander in light passes. WOOD Magazine advises taking off 1/64 inch or less per pass to reduce grain tear-out, especially around the characters.
- Stop when clean wood is exposed. Remove only enough material to clear the face; unnecessary cutting increases the chance of tear-out or an uneven surface.
What to use on plastic and reverse-engraved signs
Solid-color or laminated engraving plastic
Scott Machine Corporation’s SignGraver instructions describe filling an engraved pattern in solid-color plastic with contrasting paint. With laminated engraving plastic, engraving can expose a contrasting core, making a paint fill unnecessary for contrast. Check the specific material and desired appearance before adding paint.
Plexiglas
The Scott instructions identify a paint stick or enamel paint as fill options for engraved Plexiglas. They do not establish that every enamel or preparation method is compatible with every Plexiglas product, so follow the material and paint manufacturers’ directions.

Reverse-engraved plates and badges
Rowmark’s guidance describes masking areas that should stay unpainted, then applying acrylic to the engraving. For spray application, it calls for two coats from opposite directions to reach the character edges. It also describes liquid acrylic applied with an inexpensive foam brush; two coats will generally be needed. Its recommendation to paint the back to reduce front-visible shadows applies to the reverse-engraved construction it describes.

There is no universal paint established for every engraved sign. The appropriate choice depends on the substrate, existing coating and desired finish. The material-specific sources mention suitable spray paint for the wooden sand-back method, contrasting paint for solid-color plastic, paint sticks or enamel for Plexiglas, and acrylic for Rowmark’s reverse-engraved plate method. Follow the paint maker’s instructions and confirm compatibility with the exact sign material and finish.

That description makes it a possible sign-paint candidate, not proof that it is suitable for filling every engraved sign.
