The safest way to mount a TV is to match the mount to the television and wall, attach the wall plate to suitable structure, use the correct TV bolts and spacers, and lift the television into place with help. A typical wood-stud installation is suitable for careful DIY work, but drywall alone, fireplaces, masonry, tile, plaster, steel studs, concealed power, and very large TVs require product-specific planning or professional installation.
Before you start: decide whether DIY is appropriate
Do not begin by drilling holes. First establish whether the television, mount, wall, and proposed location are compatible.
- DIY may be reasonable for a manageable-size TV on a known wood-stud wall or approved solid masonry, provided you can confirm the attachment points and safely lift the TV with another person.
- Hire a professional for very large or expensive TVs, fireplaces, unknown or damaged walls, tile or stone veneer, plaster over lath, steel studs, structural reinforcement, new electrical outlets, or concealed power wiring.
- Follow the TV manufacturer’s instructions. Sony and LG recommend qualified installation, particularly because incorrect mounting can cause injury or property damage. See Sony’s wall-mounting guide and LG’s mounting steps.
A mount’s weight rating applies only when it is installed in an approved wall using the specified hardware. It does not prove that your particular drywall, stud, block, or anchor can support the load.

Screen size alone is not enough. Two TVs with the same diagonal measurement can have different hole patterns, weights, rear clearances, and bolt requirements.

Record these details from the TV manual
- Weight without the table stand, plus the weight of accessories attached to or supported by the mount.
- Screen dimensions and the location of ports, ventilation openings, and cable connections.
- The exact VESA pattern, measured horizontally by vertically in millimetres. Common examples include 100 × 100, 200 × 100, 200 × 200, 400 × 400, and 600 × 400, but verify your exact model using the manufacturer’s guidance.
- The required screw diameter, thread pitch, length, and maximum safe insertion depth.
- Whether the rear is flat, recessed, curved, or obstructed, and whether spacers are required.
- Whether a separate connection box or unusual cable arrangement needs extra clearance.
Choose a mount whose size range, weight capacity, VESA range, wall-construction requirements, and hardware all match the TV. Do not force a bolt that binds or bottoms out: a screw that is too long can damage internal components, while one that is too short may not hold the bracket securely.
Choose the right type of mount

A full-motion mount is not automatically safer or better. Extension increases the moment applied to the wall, so structural attachment and cable slack become more important.
Choose the height and location
There is no universal correct TV height. Sit in the main viewing position, relax your neck, and mark the approximate screen centre at seated eye level. Then account for the TV’s height, the mount’s offset, a media console, a soundbar, doors, windows, walking paths, glare, and ventilation.

- Use cardboard or painter’s tape to mock up the TV outline.
- Check that the bottom edge clears furniture and that the top edge avoids trim or ceiling features.
- Confirm that power and signal cables can reach the ports without tension.
- For a tilt or full-motion mount, check the final viewing angle and clearance when the TV moves.
Above a fireplace
Treat a fireplace as a separate installation, not as an ordinary drywall project. The TV may be too high for comfortable viewing, exposed to damaging heat, or difficult to cable. Check the television manufacturer’s restrictions and measure the temperature at the proposed location while the fireplace is operating. A mantel does not automatically eliminate heat exposure. A compatible pull-down mount may help with viewing height, but it still needs appropriate structural attachment.
Tools and supplies
For a typical wood-stud installation, gather:
- Compatible wall mount and its supplied hardware
- Tape measure, pencil or painter’s tape, and a level
- Stud finder; a magnet can help locate drywall screws
- Drill and the specified drill bit
- Socket wrench or driver for lag screws and a screwdriver for TV-side bolts
- Step ladder if needed
- At least one helper for lifting and hanging the TV
- Appropriate cables, cable ties or hook-and-loop straps, and a raceway if cables remain visible
For masonry, use eye protection, a masonry bit, a hammer drill where required, and only the masonry anchors and fasteners specified by the mount instructions. The Sanus installation manual illustrates the range of basic tools typically used.

Inspect the wall and find a safe attachment point
Wood studs
- Scan horizontally to locate likely studs.
- Confirm each stud by finding several drywall fasteners or drilling a small pilot hole. Do not treat one stud-finder beep as proof.
- Measure stud spacing and compare it with the wall plate’s slots.
- Check that the planned holes will keep the plate centred and level.
- Look for outlets, switches, plumbing fixtures, radiators, and visible pipe or cable routes before drilling.
- Use the actual wall plate or its template to mark the holes.
If the mount does not align with the studs, use a wider plate, a properly rated single-stud model, a securely fastened horizontal mounting board spanning multiple studs, structural blocking installed inside the wall, or a different location. Do not improvise with random drywall anchors for a heavy or articulating TV.
Concrete and block
Confirm that the wall is solid concrete, approved concrete block, or another material covered by the mount instructions. Thin brick veneer, decorative stone, tile, plaster, hollow block, cracked masonry, and deteriorated surfaces are not automatically equivalent to solid structural masonry. Use the specified anchor type, hole diameter, depth, and hole-cleaning procedure. Keep the drill perpendicular to the wall.

Wood-stud hardware is not automatically suitable for steel studs. Check whether the manufacturer approves the installation and supplies a steel-stud kit or requires reinforcement. The cited Sanus guidance shows why this is a product-specific installation rather than a standard wood-stud job.
How to mount a TV to wood studs
1. Mark the wall plate
Hold the wall plate at the chosen location, align its holes with confirmed studs, and check level in both directions. Mark every required hole. A level plate makes final adjustment easier and reduces the chance of a crooked TV.
2. Drill the pilot holes
Drill to the manufacturer-specified diameter and depth. Pilot-hole size is not arbitrary: an oversized hole reduces holding power, while an undersized hole can split the stud or make the fastener difficult to seat.

3. Attach and test the wall plate
Install the supplied lag screws or other approved structural fasteners. Tighten them firmly without stripping the wood or crushing the mount. Recheck level, then push and pull the plate gently. It should not shift, rock, or flex.

4. Attach the brackets to the TV
- Place the TV screen-down on a clean, padded, stable surface, following the TV manufacturer’s handling instructions.
- Identify the four VESA holes and orient the rails correctly.
- Select the correct bolts and spacers from the mount hardware and TV instructions.
- Start every bolt by hand. Stop if one binds, bottoms out, or requires excessive force.
- Tighten firmly without stripping the TV’s threaded inserts or crushing the rear housing.
- Confirm that both rails are parallel, symmetrical, and that safety locks, release cords, or retaining mechanisms are installed as directed.
For model-specific screw requirements, consult the TV documentation and Sony’s VESA mounting guidance as an example of why correct screw size and depth matter.
5. Hang and lock the TV
Use two people for most televisions and additional help for very large or awkward sets. Lift from the bottom and sides, never by pressing on the screen. Hook or slide the brackets onto the wall plate, engage every safety lock or retaining screw, and gently pull the lower edge away from the wall to confirm that the TV is captured.
Use the mount’s adjustment mechanism to level the screen. Do not rely on friction, an unsecured hook, or the TV merely resting on the plate.
Can you mount a TV without studs?
Sometimes, but only when the mount is specifically designed and rated for the wall and TV. Some products use heavy-duty toggle-style hardware for hollow walls. Others, including several Sanus models, explicitly prohibit installation into drywall alone. Samsung discusses toggle bolts in some situations but still emphasizes that the wall must support the TV.

Do not use ordinary plastic drywall plugs for a TV. A “no studs required” claim applies only within the product’s stated TV-size, weight, wall-material, and hardware limits. Large, deep, or full-motion TVs create more leverage and are poor candidates for generic drywall-only mounting. Damaged drywall, plaster over lath, unknown construction, and previous repairs further reduce confidence in the advertised rating.
For a product-specific example, the Commercial Electric 69570 is advertised for certain smaller TVs on sheetrock or plaster without studs. That does not make drywall-only mounting a general rule. When uncertain, add structural blocking, choose another location, or hire a professional.

Visible cables
- Use a surface raceway, sleeve, or clips suitable for the application.
- Connect and test devices before final cable management.
- Leave service slack for tilting or full-motion movement.
- Keep cables away from pinch points and moving arms.
- Avoid tight bends at HDMI, power, optical, and Ethernet ports.
- Label cables before lifting the TV if the ports will be difficult to reach.
Low-voltage cables inside the wall
Use cables rated for in-wall installation where required by local code and the cable manufacturer. Use suitable low-voltage wall plates or brush plates, avoid running signal cables tightly alongside power wiring for long distances, and leave enough slack for service.
AC power
Do not fish the TV’s ordinary power cord inside the wall. Use an existing properly located receptacle, have an electrician install one, or use a listed in-wall power relocation kit installed according to its instructions. An in-wall-rated HDMI cable is not an in-wall power solution. Best Buy’s service guidance distinguishes low-voltage video cabling from AC power wiring.
Troubleshooting
The TV is crooked
Check that the wall plate is level, the TV rails are symmetrical, the set is fully locked onto the plate, and any post-installation leveling adjustment is correctly set. Inspect for a bowed wall or a fastener that is not seated. Do not loosen structural fasteners to compensate for a severely crooked wall.

The TV tilts forward or the mount feels loose
Stop using it. Common causes include unengaged safety locks, an upside-down mount, brackets that are not fully seated, incorrect spacers or bolts, uneven full-motion arms, or a flexing wall plate. Remove the TV with assistance and correct the underlying problem instead of tightening random adjustment screws.
HDMI ports are inaccessible
Before hanging the TV, connect cables that will be difficult to reach. If regular access is expected, choose a tilt or full-motion mount. Leave slack for movement and consider a right-angle adapter only if it does not force the connector against the port.
The wall plate flexes
Do not proceed. Recheck the wall material, fastener type, hole size, stud engagement, and mount instructions. A mount rated for the TV cannot compensate for an inadequate wall attachment.
When to call a professional
Arrange professional help if the TV is very large, heavy, expensive, or difficult to lift; the wall is masonry, tile, plaster, veneer, steel-stud, damaged, or unknown; the installation is above a fireplace; no suitable studs align; the mount will be heavily extended; or power must be relocated. Ask for a written scope covering the wall type, mount supply, cable concealment, fireplace work, electrical work, permits, and any exclusions. Service availability and pricing vary by location. For example, Best Buy lists different prices by TV size and whether wire concealment is included, while Home Depot’s referral service directs readers to local providers rather than publishing one universal national price.
