To make a natural backyard pond, choose a level site with a mix of sun and shade, shape a basin with a shallow wildlife-access slope and planting shelves, then use a liner or other water-retention method suited to your soil. Fill and plant it with locally appropriate aquatic species. Decide whether it is a wildlife pond or a fish pond before adding equipment: a small wildlife pond generally needs no pump or filter, while fish change the depth, habitat and maintenance requirements.
Choose a site that suits the pond
Start with a reasonably level, quiet spot that you can see and reach for maintenance. A mix of sun and shade helps balance plant growth and algae. The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) recommends partial shade while allowing some full sun over the pond. Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) guidance identifies at least five hours of sun as an ideal target in its regional advice; that is not a universal requirement.
Avoid heavy tree cover if falling leaves will be difficult to remove. Decaying leaf litter can deplete oxygen in the water. Also avoid concentrated runoff from roofs, driveways or fertilized lawns, which can carry sediment and nutrients into the pond. If managing runoff is your main goal, a rain garden may be more suitable.

Before digging, consider tree roots, access for excavation, and buried utilities. Check for underground services before work on a large or deep pond. Keep the site visible enough for supervision, especially if children may be nearby. (See RHS guidance on wildlife ponds, RHS pond-construction guidance and Maryland DNR pond guidance.)

Shape the basin for wildlife and plants
Mark an irregular outline if you want a natural appearance; a flexible liner can accommodate a custom shape. Make at least one side a long, shallow slope or beach so wildlife can get in and out. A stable, partly submerged log, flat stones, pebbles or gravel can help form a route, provided they cannot shift or create an unstable edge.
Dig shelves at different heights around the basin. They create planting zones for plants with different water-depth needs and help avoid a steep-sided hole that offers wildlife no easy exit. Keep the outline and shelves smooth enough that a liner can lie against them without sharp protrusions.
Depth depends on the pond’s purpose, climate and planting plan; there is no single depth that suits every backyard pond. The RHS recommends a varied depth of 20–60 cm (8 in–2 ft) for a wildlife pond. In its broader construction advice for pond planting and overwintering, it gives 38 cm (15 in) as a minimum and 75 cm (30 in) as an ideal depth for a broad range of plants. These recommendations address different contexts, so use them as design guidance rather than a universal rule. (See the RHS wildlife-pond advice and RHS construction guidance.)

Decide whether it is a wildlife pond or a fish pond
A wildlife-first pond is designed to support a range of plants and visiting animals, with shallow access, varied depths and minimal equipment. Fish are predators and can reduce biodiversity; their waste also adds nutrients that may encourage algae, according to the RHS. A fish pond needs separate planning rather than simply adding fish to a small wildlife basin.
For fish, USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service guidance gives a minimum depth of 18 inches and suggests a 2–3 ft deep end. The RHS also recommends substantial surface area for fish. Those fish-pond guidelines are not dimensions to apply automatically to a small wildlife-only pond; local climate, species and project conditions matter. Fish ponds may need pumps, filters, greater depth and more area. (See USDA NRCS backyard fish pond guidance and RHS wildlife pond guidance.)
Choose how the pond will hold water
The right construction method depends on the pond’s shape, the ground and the level of work you can take on.

- [Easy to work with]: Compare with stiff HDPE or LLDPE material, the reinforced PE pond liner is sofer and more flexible. Will be quite easy to mold and conform to your pond shapes. Diy your own ponds will not be that difficult.
- [Durable pond liner for outdoor ponds]: Consist of three layers-middle woven HDPE and two sides reinforced PE, the pond liner is made of 100% virgin HDPE with 28Mil thickness. Time will tell how durable the pond liner is.
- [Safe and widely used application]: The pond liner could be be used as Koi/Fish pond liner, duck and turtles liner, man-made waterscape liner and planter container liner. Help to enrich your garden landscape and delight your water-loving friends.
- [Convenient to use pond liner]: The pond liners are all with hemmed edges, neat and nice. Four corners with buttonholes, easy to fix on ground. The soft pond liner is freely to be cut to any sizes and shape.
- [Some user tips]: Please add a layer of underlayment before laying the pond liner, such as sand, old carpet and any others sheet of fabrics. Please kindly note the liner is durable, not indestructible. Supercooling and sun exposure will reduce its service life. Please freely reach out to us if you have any questions and we will work it out until your satisfaction.
| Method | Best fit | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| Flexible butyl or PVC liner | A custom-shaped pond where the soil does not reliably retain water | Allows freedom over shape and depth. RHS says butyl is heavier and more expensive than PVC but more durable, with a stated lifespan of 25 to 50 years or more; this is general RHS guidance, not a guarantee for a particular liner or installation. |
| Rigid preformed tub | A small pond where a fixed shape is acceptable | Simpler to install, but limits the shape and may not provide a long, shallow wildlife beach. |
| Clay | A site with suitable clay and a basin design that can be lined evenly | Can produce a natural-looking basin, but applying a consistent layer without air pockets takes skill. Larger projects may warrant professional advice. |
| Naturally retentive soil or a high water table | A site where ground conditions already retain water | An artificial liner may not be needed, but whether the ground will hold water depends on the site. |

Measure the pond at its widest points and include the maximum depth and enough material to overlap the edges. Maryland DNR gives this sizing formula, which allows one foot of overlap on each side:
- Liner length: pond length + (2 × maximum depth) + 2 feet.
- Liner width: pond width + (2 × maximum depth) + 2 feet.
For example, if a pond is 8 feet long, 6 feet wide and 2 feet deep, the formula gives a liner at least 14 feet long and 12 feet wide. Confirm the finished excavation measurements before buying, and follow the liner maker’s instructions.

Use collected rainwater where possible. RHS notes that mains water contains nutrients that may encourage algae. Keep lawn fertilizer and nutrient-rich runoff out of the pond, too.
Choose plants for their job in the pond and for local conditions, not just their appearance. The RHS examples below illustrate useful plant roles; they are not a universal shopping list. Verify each plant’s native status, invasive restrictions, hardiness, mature size and suitable planting depth in your area. Penn State Extension warns that non-native invasive plants can harm nearby natural areas if they escape.

Maintain a wildlife-first pond without unnecessary equipment
A small wildlife pond generally does not need a filter or pump. Routine emptying is not recommended by Maryland DNR. Removing water or disturbing the pond unnecessarily can disrupt the habitat it is meant to provide.
If you do install a pump, choose an arrangement that protects small animals from being drawn in. Fish alter the maintenance equation: their waste increases nutrient levels, and fish may require a pump and filter as well as a larger, deeper pond. Choose the pond’s purpose before buying equipment or stocking animals. (See RHS wildlife pond guidance, Maryland DNR guidance, RHS pond-management advice and USDA NRCS fish-pond guidance.)
Check local rules and plan for safety
Requirements can vary by location, pond depth and project. Before excavation, contact the relevant local authority about permits, depth limits, fencing and liability rules. Do not assume that advice from another state or country applies to your property.
- Supervise children around the pond; consider a fence or protective grid where appropriate.
- Keep the pond accessible for maintenance without creating an unsafe route or edge.
- If you install a pump, filter or lighting, check local electrical rules. The RHS says pond-equipment electrical installation must be done by a qualified electrician.
- Check for buried utilities before digging, particularly for a large or deep pond.
