On a twig, leaf arrangement is the quickest way to separate maple from American sycamore and sweetgum: maples have opposite leaves, while sycamore and sweetgum have alternate leaves. If you have only a loose leaf, compare its outline and teeth instead, then use nearby fruit, bark, or a twig to confirm. Maple leaves vary by species, so no single outline fits every maple.
Start with how leaves attach to the twig
Look at a node—the point where leaves attach. If two leaves sit directly across from one another, the arrangement is opposite, which points to maple. If one leaf attaches at each node, with leaves alternating sides or spiraling along the twig, the arrangement is alternate, consistent with American sycamore or sweetgum.
This is especially useful when comparing red maple and sweetgum, whose leaf shapes can seem similar. Oregon State University also notes that maples have opposite leaves in its guide to examining leaves.
A detached leaf cannot reveal how it was arranged on the twig. Do not use arrangement as though you observed it; move on to shape and margin, and look for a twig or other evidence if possible.

Compare the leaf outline and edge

These are tendencies, not a universal maple template. The comparisons here focus on American sycamore (Platanus occidentalis) and American sweetgum (Liquidambar styraciflua); “maple” includes many species whose leaves differ in lobe shape and margin. Use scent only as a supporting clue
Gently crush or bruise a leaf and smell it: sweetgum leaves are fragrant when bruised, and the odor can help distinguish sweetgum from red maple. Smell is subjective, so treat it as a secondary clue rather than a verdict. Never taste an unidentified leaf. Confirm American sycamore with twig, fruit, or bark
When the leaf shape is not decisive, look for features elsewhere on the tree. American sycamore has several useful corroborating clues:

- Fruit: It produces round clusters of achenes.
- Bark: On mature trees, the outer bark often peels in thin plates, revealing pale inner bark.

A practical decision sequence
- If the leaf is attached: Check the node. Opposite leaves point to maple; alternate leaves are consistent with sycamore or sweetgum.
- Compare lobes and teeth: A pointed five-to-seven-lobed star with fine teeth favors sweetgum. Three to five broad lobes with coarse teeth favor American sycamore. Maple shape varies; red maple commonly has three to five lobes and toothed edges.
- If sweetgum and red maple remain hard to distinguish: Use leaf arrangement if you have the twig, and consider bruised-leaf fragrance only as additional evidence.
- For a possible sycamore: Check for a bud concealed by the petiole base, round fruit clusters, or peeling pale bark.
- If the leaf is loose: Base the first comparison on shape and margin, and seek an associated twig, fruit, or identifiable tree nearby before treating the identification as certain.
