Grow comfrey in a spot with moist, moderately fertile soil and sun or partial shade, giving it room to spread or a plan to contain it. For a dedicated patch of leaves for garden use, Bocking 14 is a cultivar selected for plant feed and rarely sets seed. Once established, comfrey can provide repeated foliage for compost, mulch or homemade liquid feed—but it is vigorous, and it should not be eaten or used as a remedy.
Which comfrey should you grow?
Common comfrey, Symphytum officinale, is a rhizomatous perennial, not a compact annual. The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) lists its mature height and spread as 1–1.5 m each; those figures apply to this species, not necessarily every comfrey. Choose a location where that size and its spread are acceptable, or be prepared to manage it. RHS common comfrey profile
For a dedicated plant-feed patch
RHS horticultural advisor Caroline Mazzey identifies Bocking 14 as a cultivar selected for plant feed that rarely sets seed. That makes it a practical choice when you want a managed patch of foliage rather than a plant that readily seeds around. How do I grow comfrey?
- Choose the site. For S. officinale, RHS recommends moderately fertile, moist soil in full sun or partial shade. Allow for a mature spread of 1–1.5 m, and avoid planting where its rhizomes and vigorous growth will be hard to manage. RHS species profile

- Plan for its growth. Keep the plant in a space where its eventual size and spread are manageable. Common comfrey can become vigorous and a nuisance if it is allowed to spread unchecked. RHS species profile
How do I propagate comfrey?
Choose a method based on the plant you want to reproduce and how much establishment work you are willing to do. RHS lists seed, root division and root cuttings for S. officinale; these methods are not interchangeable when cultivar identity matters.

Propagation timings and methods are from the RHS common comfrey profile. Use vegetative propagation when you want a plant that retains the characteristics of a named cultivar.
When should I cut comfrey back?
RHS advises cutting plants back after flowering to encourage neat, young foliage. Wear gloves and use shears or secateurs to cut leaves at the base. If you want both foliage and flowers for bees, cut the patch in staggered sections rather than cutting every plant at once; Mazzey describes this approach for maintaining flowers while encouraging regrowth. For an established plant, Utah State University Extension says foliage can be harvested every two weeks during the growing season. How can I use comfrey leaves in the garden?
Add leaves to compost
Cut foliage can go straight into the compost. This is the simplest option if you already manage a compost pile and do not need to use the leaves immediately as a surface dressing or liquid feed. RHS species profile

Use shredded leaves as mulch
Shred the leaves and spread them as mulch around garden plants. This uses fresh foliage directly, without the steeping time needed to make a liquid feed. RHS species profile
Make a liquid feed
- Put cut comfrey leaves in a container and steep them in water for two to four weeks. The RHS gives this period as guidance in its 2026 growing guide. RHS guide, published 31 March 2026
- Dilute the resulting liquid at about one part feed to ten parts water, adjusting until it is roughly the colour of weak tea. This is an approximate garden recipe, not a standardized nutrient concentration. RHS guide, published 31 March 2026
Homemade feeds vary and are usually weaker than purchased fertilizers, according to RHS; the cited guidance does not establish a nutrient analysis for comfrey feed. Do not treat this mixture as a complete or standardized fertilizer. RHS guide

What safety precautions matter?
- Do not eat comfrey. RHS flags it as harmful if eaten repeatedly. Utah State University Extension warns that its toxic alkaloids can cause severe liver toxicity with repeated or high-dose ingestion. Keep it out of food use. RHS species profile; Utah State University Extension
- Wear gloves when handling it. RHS advises gloves and other protective equipment when working with comfrey; use gloves when cutting foliage. RHS species profile
- Do not use it as a home remedy. The European Medicines Agency summary concerns regulated medicines made from comfrey root and pyrrolizidine-alkaloid exposure.
