For household quantities in the United States, take old gasoline to a local household hazardous waste (HHW) program or regional collection center—but call first. Rules for acceptance, containers, quantity, appointments, and collection events vary by location. Keep the fuel capped and identified in a suitable gasoline container, and never pour it into a drain, sewer, onto the ground, or into household trash.
Find a local collection program and confirm its rules
Contact your city or county HHW, environmental, or solid-waste program. Some areas use regional collection centers or scheduled events. The Iowa Department of Natural Resources directs residents to a Regional Collection Center; the King County, Washington, gasoline disposal program is one example of a local service with its own intake rules. Neither example sets rules for other communities.
Before you load or transport the fuel, ask the receiving program:
- Does it accept gasoline, including a gasoline-and-oil mixture if that is what you have?
- Who is eligible to use the service, and is an appointment or event required?
- What container, labeling, and quantity limits apply? Are there fees?
- What should you do with a leaking, corroded, or unlabeled container, or with an empty can?
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency explains that household hazardous waste is excluded from federal Subtitle C hazardous-waste regulation and remains subject to state and local regulation. That does not make improper disposal safe or acceptable, and local collection requirements are not uniform. See the EPA’s household hazardous waste guidance.

Keep the gasoline contained while you arrange disposal
Use a suitable, labeled container
Keep the gasoline in a suitable container intended for gasoline, capped and labeled. Do not transfer it into a food or drink container, remove its label, or open, decant, or filter it just to make disposal easier. The EPA advises keeping hazardous products in their original containers when possible; the U.S. Fire Administration also advises keeping products in original containers. If the container is corroded, leaking, unlabeled, or otherwise questionable, call the HHW program or fire department for instructions rather than handling it as if it were routine.
Keep it away from people and ignition sources
Gasoline vapors can ignite and flash back. Keep the container away from children, heat, flames, sparks, cigarettes, and hot equipment, and do not store it inside a house or basement. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s fuel safety guidance explains the vapor and flashback hazard.

Do not mix or burn it
Do not mix gasoline with oil, antifreeze, cleaners, or other leftover products. The EPA warns that incompatible household hazardous waste mixtures can react, ignite, or explode. Never burn gasoline or use it to start or restart a fire; the CPSC expressly warns against using gasoline for either purpose.

- Get the facility’s instructions first. Confirm acceptance, quantity, container, and appointment or event requirements with the local program.
- Use the container it approves. Secure it for the trip and keep it away from passengers when possible. Do not improvise with an unapproved vessel.
- Follow local limits and staff directions. For example, King County requires a gasoline-labeled approved safety can no larger than five gallons and limits a trip to 25 gallons. These are King County rules, not nationwide limits.
- Hand it to the receiving facility or event. Follow staff instructions for both the gasoline and its container. Do not put gasoline in regular trash or recycling.
Why old gasoline should not be poured away or assumed usable
Gasoline can lose some ignition performance with age. Indiana’s Department of Environmental Management notes that long-stored fuel can become contaminated by dust, dirt, or water, or undergo changes described as gumming or varnish formation; it directs unusable gasoline to an HHW collection program. Its guidance does not establish a universal age after which gasoline is automatically unusable. If you are considering reuse, consult the equipment manufacturer rather than relying on a fixed age rule or a home filtering or additive recipe.

Do not pour gasoline down a household drain, into a storm sewer, onto soil, or into the trash. The EPA warns that improper household hazardous waste disposal can pollute the environment, threaten human health, and harm sanitation workers or wastewater systems. Indiana IDEM also warns against those disposal routes for gasoline. The federal household-waste exclusion is not permission to discard fuel carelessly.

Do not guess at cleanup or disposal when a spill is beyond your control or you are unsure what to do. The U.S. Fire Administration’s home hazardous materials guidance, reviewed April 1, 2023, says: “If you cannot control the spill, or are unsure about cleanup and disposal, call the fire department.” For a damaged container, contact the local HHW program or fire department for handling instructions rather than transferring the fuel yourself.
