Remove indoor crickets with a vacuum or sticky trap, then stop reinvasion by sealing entry gaps, reducing outdoor cover and (for light-attracted species) unnecessary exterior lighting. Dry damp, cluttered areas when camel crickets are likely. Use pesticides only as a label-approved last resort.
Remove crickets that are already inside
- Vacuum visible crickets. University of Maryland Extension describes a vacuum as one of the most effective, least-toxic ways to remove invading crickets. Use a crevice tool around baseboards, behind appliances and in cracks, then empty the vacuum promptly.
- Set sticky traps or glue boards. Place them along walls and near places where you see or hear activity. Minnesota Extension notes that traps are useful for crickets and particularly helpful for camel crickets; Missouri Extension also recommends them. Check traps regularly and remove captured insects.
These methods are best for a few indoor crickets. A continuing stream of insects usually means an entry point, nearby outdoor cover or a moisture problem still needs correction.
Identify the likely cricket before changing the environment
Households commonly encounter field, house and camel crickets, and their habits are different. Adult crickets are generally shiny black or brown, about 0.6–1 inch long, with long antennae and nocturnal activity, according to UC Statewide IPM. That description is a starting clue, not a species diagnosis.

Block the routes crickets use to enter
Inspect the foundation and every ground-level opening. Repair cracks and gaps around doors, windows and vents. Fit tight screens, install or replace door sweeps, and use weather stripping where daylight or drafts show a gap. Choose caulk and screen-repair materials that match the surface and opening; they provide exclusion, not insecticidal control. Practical entry-point advice is available from Minnesota Extension and University of Maryland Extension.

Reduce shelter beside the house
Move firewood, brush, leaf piles and other debris away from walls. Cut back tall grass and weeds near foundations, and avoid leaving dense ground cover directly against the structure. Fewer hiding places near the building means fewer crickets reaching gaps and screens.
Use lighting selectively
Turn off exterior lights that are not needed, especially near doors and windows, or consider yellow-toned lighting that is less attractive to field and house crickets. This is not a universal fix: camel crickets are not attracted to lights.

Dry damp, cluttered areas
If crickets are concentrated in a basement, crawlspace, utility room or other dark area, look for moisture first. Repair leaks, improve drainage and use a fan or dehumidifier to dry the space. Remove stacks of cardboard, papers and other clutter that provide hiding places. Minnesota Extension identifies drying damp areas as particularly effective when camel crickets are involved; a dehumidifier supports that work but does not kill crickets by itself.
When pesticides are justified
Escalate to insecticide only when exclusion, trapping and sanitation cannot bring the problem under control quickly enough. UF/IFAS Extension says cricket problems are usually seasonal and that long-residual indoor applications are not generally needed for adequate control. If you use a product:

Contact a licensed pest professional when crickets continue after you have sealed openings, reduced nearby habitat and corrected dampness, or when the source is inaccessible (such as a crawlspace or wall void). Missouri Extension lists professional help as an option for persistent invasions after entry points and outdoor habitats have been addressed. Ask the professional to identify likely entry routes and moisture sources, explain the proposed treatment site, and show that any pesticide is labeled for that use.

A practical order of operations
- Vacuum individual crickets and place sticky traps where activity continues.
- Check whether the area is damp or cluttered; dry it, fix leaks and clear hiding places.
- Seal foundation, door, window and vent gaps; repair screens and add sweeps or weather stripping.
- Trim vegetation and remove debris beside the house.
- Switch off unnecessary exterior lights if field or house crickets are involved.
- Reassess after these changes; use a properly labeled pesticide or hire a professional only if the invasion persists.
