White spots on a projector can come from a smudge on the lens, dust in the optical path, a problem with the screen or video signal, or a failed imaging component. Start by displaying the projector’s own menu: sharp dots that stay in the same place across menus and inputs may indicate a DLP micromirror or LCD-panel defect, while a soft haze is more consistent with optical contamination. Lens cleaning can help with dirt on the outside of the lens; it will not repair a failed imaging chip.
Identify the kind of white spot
Appearance is a useful clue, not a diagnosis. Check whether a mark is sharp or soft, whether it stays in the same image coordinates, and whether it appears over the projector’s own menu as well as external video.

Run these checks before cleaning or requesting repair

Display the projector’s own menu
Open the built-in menu or an internal test pattern. If the mark remains over it, the projector or projection surface is implicated. If it disappears and occurs only with one movie, game, app, or HDMI input, investigate the source chain. Photograph the menu with the mark visible. ViewSonic’s projector troubleshooting guidance also recommends checking the selected input and cable connections.

Compare solid colors
Use an internal test pattern if available, or a known-good source to show full-screen black, white, red, green, and blue. A white point on black may be a bright pixel or micromirror; a dark point on white may be a dead pixel or blocked optical area; a colored point may involve a panel or subpixel. A soft patch that is more visible in dark scenes can be consistent with dust or optical contamination. If the artifact changes with source content, suspect the signal or source instead.

Inspect the screen or wall
Project onto another clean surface if practical, and check the screen under room light. Clean a projection screen only as its maker directs. Debris on a display surface can resemble a pixel defect; Sony describes surface debris as a possible look-alike in its display-pixel guidance.

Adjust focus slightly
Turn the focus control a small amount in both directions. A crisp dot that remains crisp and fixed is more suspicious for an imaging defect; a patch whose appearance changes may be optical contamination. This is a clue, not a definitive test.

Try another source and cable
Connect a known-good source directly to the projector, bypassing docks, splitters, and adapters. This check is especially useful for ghosting, shadowing, double images, intermittent artifacts, or colored noise. For those signal-artifact cases, ViewSonic recommends a direct digital connection and, in its specific guidance, a cable shorter than 5 meters (16 feet): ViewSonic’s shadow and ghosting troubleshooting.

Power-cycle only after normal shutdown
Turn the projector off normally, let its cooling cycle finish, then unplug it and reconnect it for a retest. Consider a factory reset only if a software or picture-setting issue is plausible; record your settings first. A reset will not repair a failed DMD, LCD panel, or contaminated optical engine.
Clean the external lens safely
Follow the projector’s manual if it gives different model-specific directions. ViewSonic’s lens-cleaning instructions recommend removing loose dust first and then using lens-cleaning paper or a soft cloth with suitable lens cleaner; abrasive materials should be avoided.
- Turn the projector off, let it cool, and unplug it.
- Remove loose surface dust with a manual bulb blower or the method approved in the manual. Do not direct a blast deep into the projector.
- If residue remains, use lens-cleaning paper or a soft, nonabrasive cloth lightly moistened with suitable lens cleaner.
- Wipe gently, without pressing hard or using household glass cleaner unless the manufacturer explicitly permits it.
- Let the lens dry fully before turning the projector on and retesting.
Do not spray liquid directly on the lens or into vents. Avoid tissues, paper towels, abrasive cloths, and cotton swabs on coated optics. If an external lens clean does not change a soft spot, internal dust may require service rather than more aggressive cleaning.

Check vents and any user-serviceable filter
Blocked airflow can cause overheating, shutdowns, and accelerated deterioration, but it does not by itself establish the cause of white dots. Check the manual to see whether your model has a user-removable filter and how it should be cleaned or replaced; not every projector has one. Epson advises letting an overheated projector cool for at least five minutes, then checking the vents and air filter where applicable: Epson’s overheating guidance.

Do not vacuum directly against delicate openings unless the manual permits it. If the projector repeatedly overheats, shuts down, smells burnt, or makes unusual noises, power it off and contact the manufacturer rather than continuing to test it.
When white dots may indicate an imaging-component failure
On DLP projectors, a DMD chip controls an array of micromirrors. ViewSonic says fixed bright, dark, or twinkling points may result from a defective DMD and cannot be fixed by the end user; service or an RMA may be required. See its stuck-pixel guidance. That guidance is a reason to seek service, not proof that every white dot on every DLP model is a DMD failure.

LCD projectors can show panel or optical problems instead, including dots, alignment issues, dust, or polarizer-related artifacts. Epson notes that some black dots or brightly lit red, blue, or green dots can be inherent LCD-panel characteristics rather than a malfunction. The model’s warranty and pixel-defect policy determine whether a particular defect qualifies for service: Epson safety documentation. LCoS and other designs have their own optical components, so brand or technology label alone is not enough to identify the fault.
Stop consumer cleaning attempts and contact support if a dot is sharply defined, stays at the same coordinates on every source and menu, twinkles, multiplies, or appears in the projector’s internal test pattern. A lamp replacement is not a general remedy for individual fixed white dots; consider a lamp only when there are separate lamp-life, brightness, startup, or color symptoms.
Decide whether to repair or replace

There is no reliable universal repair price for DMD, panel, or optical-engine work; costs depend on model, parts, labor, and location. Do not buy a lamp or cleaning supplies as a substitute for identifying the fault.

Prepare a warranty or service request
- Record the model, serial number, purchase date, and operating hours if available.
- Photograph or video the defect on a black image and with the projector menu visible.
- Note whether it appears during startup, on the internal test pattern, and across multiple inputs.
- Check the manufacturer’s warranty, pixel-defect policy, and service terms for your model, country, and purchase date.
- Contact the manufacturer before opening the projector. Ask whether diagnosis is covered, who pays shipping, and whether the remedy is repair, exchange, or replacement.
- Obtain an RMA number if required. Before shipping, save settings and remove personal streaming-account information where possible.
Official routes include ViewSonic’s US RMA and service portal, BenQ’s US support page, and Epson’s US service-center locator. BenQ’s linked warranty page covers eligible US business-projector products under its stated regional terms; shipping costs and RMA conditions vary, so do not assume those terms apply to every model or country: BenQ US business-projector warranty information.
Prevent dust and avoid making the problem worse
- Keep vents clear and follow the model’s filter-maintenance schedule.
- Use the lens cap when supplied, and store the projector covered in a dry place.
- Limit exposure to smoke, grease, and dusty environments.
- Do not move a lamp-based projector while it is hot; let it complete its cooling cycle.
- Use only manufacturer-approved cleaning methods and avoid opening the optical engine.
Epson warns that accumulated internal dust can raise internal temperature and contribute to malfunction or early deterioration of optical parts in its safety documentation.
