Start by checking whether the wrong color appears in the TV’s own menus and built-in picture test, or only with a particular app, channel, HDMI device, or cable. That distinction helps separate a source or connection problem from a TV-side fault—and keeps you from changing calibration settings or buying parts unnecessarily.
Identify the kind of color problem
“Color distortion” can describe several different symptoms, and they do not all point to the same cause.
- A blue, red, green, purple, or yellow cast across the whole picture: Check picture settings, the source signal, and whether the problem affects the TV’s menus as well as video.
- Black-and-white video or a missing color: Check the source and cable connections, especially if using composite or component cables.
- Washed-out or excessively vivid color: A picture preset, color-temperature setting, HDR mode, or source-device output may be responsible.
- Colored lines, blocks, flashing, or banding: Test the internal screen and connections. If the artifacts also appear in menus or the TV’s own test, a TV-side fault becomes more likely.
- A fixed colored patch: If it remains in the same place across menus and sources, arrange a manufacturer or professional assessment rather than pressing or rubbing the screen.
- Color changes only in HDR, Dolby Vision, or game mode: Compare that mode with ordinary SDR video and check the mode-specific picture settings.
A cable or source can cause missing or incorrect color; a persistent defect visible across the TV’s own interface and multiple sources is more concerning for the television itself.

Check whether the problem affects every source
Before resetting anything, compare a few different things on the TV: a built-in streaming app, another title or channel, another HDMI input, and the home screen or settings menu. If possible, connect the same external device to another display.

| What you see | Where to investigate first |
|---|---|
| One app, channel, or program looks wrong | The app, program, stream, broadcast, or provider |
| One HDMI device looks wrong | That device’s output settings, cable, HDMI port, or receiver/switch in the signal path |
| All external devices look wrong, but built-in apps are normal | Input configuration, HDMI connections, receiver, or affected port |
| Menus and built-in video are also discolored | Global picture settings, software, or a TV-side hardware issue |
| The internal Picture Test is discolored | A TV-side setting or fault; continue with a picture reset, then contact support if it persists |
LG and TCL both advise comparing other channels, apps, or screens before concluding that the TV itself is defective (LG guidance; TCL guidance).
Run the TV’s built-in picture test
The internal test is a useful dividing line: it shows whether the problem is present without relying on a particular app, channel, or connected device. It can help isolate a problem, but it does not identify the exact failed component.
Samsung
On many newer Samsung TVs, try Settings → All Settings → Support → Device Care → Self Diagnosis → Picture Test. Older models may instead use Settings → Support → Self Diagnosis → Picture Test. Samsung’s menus and available diagnostic options vary by model and signal (Samsung picture troubleshooting).

Sony
Sony’s troubleshooting instructions vary across Android TV and Google TV versions. Follow the support instructions for your model to check external-device connections, adjust or reset picture settings, and arrange repair if abnormal colors persist (Sony picture troubleshooting).
TCL
TCL’s guidance emphasizes testing other sources, checking cables, and adjusting or resetting picture settings. Some TCL/Google TV models offer reset controls under Settings → Device Preferences → Reset; the path depends on the TV’s operating system (TCL color troubleshooting).
If the test looks normal, focus on the source device, cable, input, or signal. If it is discolored too, reset picture settings and restart the TV; if the abnormal test remains, contact the manufacturer. Normal menus alone do not prove that every video path is healthy.

HDMI devices
- Turn off the TV and connected source device.
- Unplug the HDMI cable at both ends, then reconnect it firmly.
- Try a different HDMI input on the TV.
- Test with a known-good cable suitable for the source and connection. A more expensive or premium-branded cable is not automatically a color fix.
- If the signal passes through a receiver, soundbar, switch, or splitter, connect the source directly to the TV temporarily.
- If available, test the same source on another display to see whether the fault follows the device.
Samsung, LG, and TCL include HDMI testing or connection checks in their troubleshooting guidance (Samsung; LG; TCL). A cable can contribute to picture problems, but substitution is a diagnostic test—not proof that every color fault is caused by HDMI.

Composite and component cables
For composite video, connect the single yellow video plug to the yellow video jack. For component video, match the red, blue, and green video plugs to the corresponding component-video jacks. Do not mistake the red component-video plug for the red audio jack. A misplaced or partly disconnected plug can produce black-and-white video or missing and incorrect colors. Check the labels on the TV and source; not every model has these older connections. TCL explains the cable matching in its color troubleshooting guide.
Reset picture settings before adjusting color by eye
Look for an option named Reset Picture, Restore Default Picture Settings, Picture Mode Reset, or Reset Current Mode. The exact label and path depend on the TV. Samsung documents a Reset Picture control and color-related options such as Color and Tint; Sony also recommends resetting picture settings when appropriate (Samsung picture settings; Sony picture troubleshooting).
After the reset, use a neutral preset such as Standard, Movie, or Cinema and compare the picture. Check whether the TV stores settings separately by input or picture mode. A vivid preset can exaggerate saturation, while a warm or cool color temperature changes the overall cast. HDR, Dolby Vision, and game modes may each use different picture settings or tone mapping; compare the affected mode with ordinary SDR video before treating the difference as a fault.
Do not use universal numerical values for Color, Tint, Gamma, or White Balance: appropriate settings depend on the display, room, source, mode, and calibration target. Avoid service-menu RGB or white-balance changes. They can make the imbalance worse, affect multiple inputs or modes, and cannot repair a failing panel or internal board.

Restart and update the TV
- Turn the TV off and unplug it from the wall.
- Wait at least 30 seconds, reconnect power, and turn the TV back on.
- Check the TV’s Support or System menu for a software or firmware update; menu labels differ by brand and model.
TCL recommends a power cycle for persistent picture abnormalities, and Samsung includes firmware updates in picture troubleshooting (TCL picture troubleshooting; Samsung picture troubleshooting). An update may address software or compatibility problems, but it cannot repair physical damage or a failed panel, backlight, connector, or internal board.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Use a factory reset only after simpler checks
A factory reset is a last-resort step for a problem that persists across sources after you have checked connections, reset picture settings, and restarted or updated the TV. It can erase picture preferences, network settings, installed apps, accounts, and input configuration. TCL specifically warns that its factory reset removes settings and downloaded apps (TCL guidance).
Before proceeding, photograph settings you may want to restore and make sure you have the Wi-Fi password and account details. Do not factory-reset solely for a fault limited to one app or channel unless source-specific troubleshooting has failed.
Know when to stop troubleshooting
Arrange manufacturer or professional service if the internal picture test remains abnormal after a picture reset and restart, or if a fixed colored patch or colored lines appear across the menus and multiple sources. Visible cracks or impact damage also call for service rather than further setting changes. These symptoms point toward a TV-side problem, but they do not establish which component has failed.

If a localized discoloration persists, do not press, rub, tap, heat, or open the screen. TCL cautions against pressing or massaging the screen to address pixel-related issues (TCL pixel-issue guidance). For a possible magnet-related color problem, do not apply magnets or assume CRT degaussing advice applies to modern LCD, LED, QLED, or OLED TVs; use the source test and the model’s support guidance instead.
Before contacting support, record the model and serial number, purchase date, and whether the fault appears in menus, the internal test, and different sources. Take a photo or video of the defect. If the TV may still be under warranty, contact the manufacturer or retailer before opening it or paying for third-party repair.
Decide whether repair is worthwhile
- One loose or suspect cable: Swap in a known-good cable or bypass the receiver before buying anything.
- A source-specific problem: Troubleshoot the app, broadcast provider, console, or external player rather than paying for TV repair.
- A picture-setting problem: Reset the affected mode and make modest user-level adjustments; calibration is for a functioning TV whose owner wants more accurate color, not for a missing color channel or hardware defect.
- An abnormal internal test or persistent multi-source defect: Check warranty coverage and request a manufacturer-authorized or professional diagnosis. Ask for a quote before approving panel work.
Panel or board repair economics depend on the TV’s model, size, age, and local quote, so there is no useful universal price threshold. Compare the actual repair estimate with the cost of a suitable replacement before deciding.
