“Google Mini” can mean either the first-generation Google Home Mini or the second-generation Google Nest Mini, and they use different reset controls. Both require a physical reset on the speaker; you cannot factory-reset either one by voice or in the Google Home app. Identify the model below, then follow its steps.
Before you reset
A factory reset returns the speaker to factory settings, clears data and personalized settings from the device, and disconnects it from members of its Google Home. It cannot be undone, and you will need to set up the speaker again. Google notes that some basic device data may remain connected to the Home, so a reset should not be treated as deletion of every record associated with your Google Account. If you are troubleshooting a temporary problem, try a reboot first: unplug the speaker for one minute, then plug it back in. A reboot preserves settings; a factory reset erases them. If the speaker is still visible in Google Home, you can also reboot it by opening Home > All devices, touching and holding its device tile, then tapping Settings > More > Reboot. Google’s reboot instructions provide the app procedure.
Before erasing a speaker you plan to use again, note its name, room, Wi-Fi details, linked services and routines, and any speaker-group arrangement you may want to recreate. Do not assume all Home settings will return exactly as they were.

Identify your Google Mini

These control locations and procedures are from Google’s instructions for resetting Nest and Home speakers. Do not use one model’s method on the other.
Reset a Google Home Mini (1st generation)
- Leave the speaker plugged in and powered on.
- Turn it over and find the small reset button beneath the power cord.
- Press and hold the button. After about five seconds, the reset begins.
- Keep holding for about 10 more seconds, until the speaker plays a sound confirming that it is resetting.
- Release the button and wait for the speaker to return to setup mode.
The timings are approximate; use the confirmation sound rather than relying on an exact stopwatch countdown. Google’s reset guide gives the full instructions.
Reset a Google Nest Mini (2nd generation)
- Leave the speaker plugged in and powered on.
- Move the microphone switch on the side to off. Check that the LEDs turn orange.
- Press and hold the center of the top surface, in the area where the lights appear.
- After about five seconds, the reset begins. Continue holding for about 10 more seconds, until you hear the confirmation sound.
- Release the top surface and wait for the speaker to return to setup mode.
Google specifies approximate timings, so hold until the confirmation sound rather than treating the seconds as exact. See Google’s Nest Mini reset procedure.

Set up the speaker again
Once the reset is complete, use the Google Home app to start setup and connect the speaker to Wi-Fi. You will need a Google Account, the network password, and a phone or tablet with the current app. Keep the speaker powered on and near the router while setting it up; Bluetooth and location permissions may be required by the setup flow.
- Open Google Home and follow the prompts to add or set up the speaker.
- Choose the correct Home and room when asked.
- Connect to Wi-Fi and complete the prompts, then test a basic command or audio playback.
Google’s current setup-troubleshooting guidance lists Android 9 or later and iOS/iPadOS 16 or later for the relevant phone or tablet guidance. Requirements and app labels can change, so consult Google’s current setup troubleshooting page if the prompts differ on your device.
If the reset does not work
- Check the model and control. The Home Mini resets from the underside button; the Nest Mini uses the top center after its microphone switch is turned off.
- Check power. The speaker must be powered on for the reset procedure to work. If there are no lights or audio, troubleshoot the power source first; a reset cannot repair a failed adapter or damaged hardware.
- Check the Nest Mini microphone switch. It must be off, with orange LEDs, before you hold the top surface.
- Wait for confirmation. Keep holding the correct control until the speaker plays its reset sound. If it does not respond, unplug it for one minute, reconnect it, then try the correct procedure again.
- If setup or discovery fails after reset, update Google Home, try another supported phone or tablet, and move the speaker within roughly 15–20 feet of the router during setup. That distance is setup troubleshooting advice, not a requirement for the physical reset. Google recommends factory-resetting a speaker that still cannot be found after the listed setup steps. - If the speaker remains wholly unresponsive, use Google’s support and repair entry point rather than assuming a reset can recover failed hardware.
If you only want to change Wi-Fi
A factory reset is more disruptive than changing a network. Google speakers remember one Wi-Fi network at a time, and Google provides a separate process for connecting a Nest or Home speaker to a new network. Try that process first; if it fails, Google may require a factory reset and complete setup again. See Google’s instructions for changing the Wi-Fi network.

Prepare a Mini for sale, return, or gifting
For a handoff, Google recommends removing the speaker from the current Home in the app and then physically factory-resetting it. Removing it in the app is not a substitute for the hardware reset.

- Open Google Home and tap Home, then All devices.
- Touch and hold the speaker’s device tile.
- Tap Settings > Remove device > Remove.
- Perform the correct physical reset for the model and wait for setup mode before handing it over.

If a secondhand speaker is linked to someone else
If setup reports that the speaker is already linked to a user, perform the correct factory reset and start setup again. Changing Wi-Fi alone does not bypass another person’s account association. Google describes this setup issue at its help page for devices linked to another user.
