For the best chance of controlling soundbar volume, mute and power with your TV remote, connect the soundbar to the TV’s HDMI ARC or eARC port, enable HDMI-CEC on both devices, and select the soundbar as the TV’s audio output. Optical connections can also support volume and mute on some models, but compatibility varies. Neither connection guarantees that every TV remote will control every soundbar.
What you need
- A TV and soundbar with compatible audio and control features. For the recommended setup, both need HDMI ARC or eARC ports.
- An HDMI cable and access to the TV’s original remote. You may also need the soundbar remote or app to change its settings.
- The soundbar connected to the TV’s ARC/eARC port—not an ordinary HDMI input—and set to the matching input.
Check the labels beside the ports. The TV port may say “HDMI ARC” or “HDMI eARC”; the soundbar port may say “HDMI OUT (ARC/eARC)” or “TV OUT (ARC/eARC).” Sony explains the port distinction in its ARC connection guidance.
Connect the soundbar with HDMI ARC or eARC
ARC means Audio Return Channel: it sends audio from the TV to the soundbar over HDMI. eARC is a newer version designed for higher-bitrate audio formats. CEC—Consumer Electronics Control—is the HDMI feature that carries compatible device commands, such as volume or power. ARC/eARC handles audio; CEC handles commands. You may need both for a one-remote setup, and eARC is not required just to control volume.
- Connect the correct ports. Run an HDMI cable from the TV’s HDMI ARC/eARC port to the soundbar’s HDMI OUT or TV OUT ARC/eARC port.
- Select the soundbar’s ARC input. Use its remote or controls to choose ARC, TV ARC, eARC, D.IN, or the equivalent label. LG’s ARC setup instructions describe selecting the soundbar’s ARC input.
- Enable HDMI-CEC on the TV. Turn on the setting for HDMI device control; brand-specific names are listed below.
- Enable HDMI control on the soundbar. Look in its settings for Control for HDMI, HDMI-CEC, CEC, System Audio Control, TV Remote, or a similar option. Sony, for example, instructs users of applicable soundbars to turn on Control for HDMI in its soundbar setup guidance.
- Route TV audio to the soundbar. In the TV’s sound or audio-output settings, choose a label such as Audio System, HDMI ARC/eARC, Receiver, External Speaker, or Soundbar—not the TV’s internal speakers. Menu names differ by model and software version; Sony gives examples in its audio-output instructions.
- Test the controls. Press volume up, volume down and mute, then test TV power and whether the soundbar wakes or shuts down with it. Volume, mute and power are separate functions; success with one does not guarantee the others.
Find the TV’s HDMI-CEC setting
CEC may be listed under HDMI, external devices, connections or device control. Common brand names include:

Names and menu paths vary across models. Roku’s HDMI settings guide notes that manufacturers use different names for CEC and that device functions can vary.
Brand-specific settings to look for
Samsung TV
Look under Settings → Sound → Sound Output for a receiver, HDMI receiver or soundbar option, then check that Anynet+ (HDMI-CEC) is enabled if needed. Samsung documents volume and mute control with compatible soundbars over optical or HDMI ARC in its TV-remote soundbar instructions. Menu labels vary by model.

Sony TV
Enable BRAVIA Sync or Control for HDMI, and set the speakers to Audio system. Choose HDMI ARC/eARC as the output if the TV provides that option. Sony notes that menu labels depend on TV software in its audio-output guidance.

LG TV
Enable SIMPLINK (HDMI-CEC), choose HDMI ARC or HDMI eARC in the TV’s sound-output settings, and set the soundbar to its ARC/eARC input. LG’s ARC connection guide outlines this flow.

Roku TV
Check the HDMI settings for ARC and CEC options. Use Roku’s configuration guide for the relevant controls; exact availability depends on the TV and connected device.
If you use optical audio
Optical can be a practical fallback when ARC/eARC is unavailable or unreliable, but remote control is model-dependent. Some compatible combinations allow TV-remote volume and mute; optical does not provide HDMI-CEC commands, so power synchronization and other HDMI-dependent functions may be unavailable. Samsung documents compatible optical control, while Sony warns that certain optical-only connections do not support TV-remote volume or power-interlock functions (Samsung; Sony).

- Connect the TV’s Optical Digital OUT to the soundbar’s Optical IN.
- Set the soundbar input to Optical, OPT or D.IN, and set the TV audio output to Optical or External Audio.
- If the soundbar supports TV-remote or IR learning, enable it using the soundbar’s instructions.
- Test volume and mute, then test power separately. Do not assume that working volume control means power control is supported.
For IR learning, the soundbar needs an IR receiver, the remote must send usable infrared commands, and the remote generally needs a clear line of sight to the soundbar. Search the soundbar manual for “IR learn,” “TV remote,” “remote sync” or “learning function.” It is not a feature on every model.
Troubleshoot control or sound problems
The remote changes TV-speaker volume instead of soundbar volume
- Confirm the TV audio output is set to the soundbar or audio system.
- Check that the soundbar is on ARC/eARC input and that the cable uses the TV’s ARC/eARC port.
- Verify HDMI-CEC is enabled on both devices and the soundbar is not muted or set to another input.
There is no sound
- Reseat the HDMI cable and check both port labels, the soundbar input and the TV’s selected output.
- As a format compatibility test, set the TV’s digital audio output to PCM. Sony lists PCM as a troubleshooting option when the TV and soundbar do not negotiate audio correctly in its audio-output guidance.
- If the TV identifies an audio system but sound remains absent, try another suitable HDMI cable, toggle ARC/eARC off and on, or update the TV and soundbar software.
Sound works, but the remote does not control volume
CEC may be off, the soundbar may be on the wrong input, or the TV may still be using its internal speakers. A receiver, console, streaming box, switch or splitter can also complicate CEC communication. Test the TV and soundbar directly before restoring other HDMI devices. Roku notes that disabling CEC prevents TV-remote volume control in compatible Streambar and soundbar setups in its HDMI-device guidance.

- Turn off the TV and soundbar, then unplug both for about one minute.
- Temporarily disconnect other HDMI devices and connect the TV directly to the soundbar through ARC/eARC.
- Turn CEC on again on both devices, select the soundbar as the audio output, and test volume and mute.
- Reconnect the other HDMI devices one at a time to identify whether one disrupts control.
The soundbar turns on but will not turn off with the TV
Check for a separate Auto Power, HDMI Control or power-sync setting on the soundbar. CEC implementations differ, and optical connections do not carry HDMI power commands. A working volume control does not establish that power synchronization is supported.
ARC works but eARC does not
Try setting eARC to Auto or switching to ARC if both devices support it. ARC and eARC are distinct capabilities; an ARC-only device cannot provide eARC features. Roku’s HDMI settings guidance also cautions that eARC is not backwards compatible with ARC in every implementation.
Other ways to control the soundbar
- Soundbar remote: Use it for volume and mute if TV-remote control is unsupported.
- Universal remote: Consider one if CEC interoperability is poor or you need to control several devices. It requires programming and may not operate every soundbar feature; it will not correct an audio-output or cabling problem.
- Streaming-device remote: Some can control TV or soundbar volume over CEC or infrared. Apple TV 4K, for example, offers volume-control choices including Auto, HDMI, receiver via IR, TV via IR and Learn New Device, as described in Apple’s guide. This controls through the streaming device’s remote, not necessarily the TV remote.
Bluetooth may carry TV audio, but it does not provide the HDMI-CEC control path and remote behavior varies by model. AUX or analog audio generally carries sound without integrated device commands, so neither is the first choice when one-remote control is the goal.

When replacing equipment makes sense
Try the connection and settings checks first. Consider different equipment only if the soundbar lacks ARC/eARC and compatible IR learning, the TV lacks a suitable audio output, or the devices repeatedly fail to maintain a usable control connection despite correct setup. A cable replacement is a troubleshooting option if the cable is damaged or ARC/eARC repeatedly disconnects; the key is a stable compatible connection, not an expensive brand. A universal remote may suit a multi-device setup, but buying a new soundbar solely to fix a disabled CEC setting is usually unnecessary.
