To control a robot vacuum with Alexa, connect the robot to its manufacturer’s app, enable that brand’s Alexa skill, link the same account, and discover the device. Then use the skill’s supported commands. Compatibility and features vary by model: a basic integration may only start or stop cleaning, while some mapped models can clean named rooms.
Check whether your robot works with Alexa
Alexa support is model-specific, not guaranteed by a brand name. Check the exact model’s manual or manufacturer support page, and confirm that it supports Wi-Fi, works with Alexa in your region, and is connected through an app account you can access. Older or entry-level models may lack Alexa support or offer only basic controls. “Works with Alexa” does not necessarily mean room cleaning, scheduling, or map controls.
If you want room commands, finish mapping the home in the manufacturer’s app and save room names before linking Alexa. Those commands usually require both a compatible robot and a skill that exposes mapped-area control.

Prepare the robot and choose a clear name
- Set up the robot in its manufacturer app and confirm that it shows as online.
- Have the manufacturer account credentials ready. The Alexa skill needs to link to the account that controls the robot.
- Install and sign in to the Amazon Alexa app, and make sure an Alexa-enabled device is available for voice commands.
- Give the robot a short, distinct name that is easy to pronounce, such as “Rosie” or “Downstairs.” Avoid model numbers, punctuation, and names that sound like household members or other devices.
- Complete and label the map first if you plan to ask Alexa to clean specific rooms.
Link the robot to Alexa
- Open the Alexa app and tap More → Skills & Games.
- Search for the robot’s exact manufacturer skill. Do not choose a similarly named skill for another product category.
- Open the skill and tap Enable to Use or Enable.
- Sign in with the same manufacturer account used in the robot’s app, then approve account linking.
- Return to Alexa and run device discovery. If prompted, follow the skill’s discovery steps.
- Open Devices and check that the robot appears. Rename it there if needed, then try a basic command such as “Alexa, start Rosie.”
Alexa’s menu wording can change. If the robot does not appear after account linking, use Devices → + → Add Device → Other → Discover Devices where available, then consult the manufacturer’s instructions for the skill.

Find the right skill for your brand

Useful Alexa commands
Start with a basic command and use the brand-specific invocation if Alexa does not understand a generic request. These examples are documented formats, not a promise that every model supports every action.

For Roborock, the documented spoken invocation may sound like “robo rock.” If “Alexa, ask robo rock to clean the bedroom” fails, try “Alexa, open robo rock,” then give the cleaning instruction as a second utterance. This still depends on the specific integration and supported features.
Troubleshoot common connection problems
Alexa cannot find the robot
- Confirm that the robot is online in its manufacturer app. If it is offline there, fix that connection first.
- Check that you enabled the correct skill and linked the account that controls this robot. For Roborock, the skill must match the Roborock or Mi Home app in use.
- Disable and re-enable the skill if its account authorization may be stale, then run discovery again.
- Try manual discovery in Alexa: Devices → + → Add Device → Other → Discover Devices.
- Check model and region support, then update the Alexa and manufacturer apps and the robot’s firmware.
- If it still does not appear, restart the robot, router, and Echo device, then repeat discovery.
Alexa hears the command but says it is unsupported
Try the exact invocation format in the brand’s skill instructions—such as “ask Roomba,” “tell Shark,” or “open robo rock”—rather than only “start the vacuum.” For features the skill does not expose, use the manufacturer app. Detailed room sequences, no-go zones, mop-water settings, object-avoidance controls, and complex schedules may remain app-only.

Alexa starts the wrong robot or mishears its name
Give each robot a clearly different, easy-to-pronounce name in the manufacturer app and Alexa device list. Avoid names that resemble room names or common commands. Remove duplicate or stale Alexa entries, then discover devices again after renaming. A brand-specific invocation can help distinguish robots when a generic command does not.
A room command fails
Finish mapping and save the room labels in the manufacturer app. Confirm that the model and skill support room cleaning, and say the room name as it appears on the map. If mapping was completed after Alexa was linked, reconnect or rediscover the device. If the skill offers only basic controls, use the manufacturer app to target rooms.
The robot responds but does not move
Alexa may have sent the command successfully while the robot is charging, paused, blocked, unable to leave its dock, missing a required dustbin or tank, already handling another task, or restricted by a schedule or quiet-hours setting. Check the manufacturer app for error messages and robot status; it is the best place to diagnose hardware and cleaning-state issues.

What Alexa can—and cannot—replace
Alexa is convenient for quick commands such as starting, pausing, docking, or—on supported mapped models—cleaning a room. Its usefulness depends on what the robot’s skill exposes. The manufacturer app remains the fuller control center for maps, no-go areas, detailed schedules, suction and mopping settings, maintenance, firmware, and error reports. Physical controls on the robot are another fallback if voice recognition or the internet connection fails.
