Start with the sewn-in care label and your furniture maker’s instructions. They determine whether the fabric can be washed, which cleaners are safe, and whether a cover may be removed. For most outdoor upholstery with routine dirt, use mild soap, lukewarm water, a sponge or very soft-bristle brush, a thorough rinse, and complete air-drying. Treat mildew differently, and do not assume a removable cover is machine washable.
Before cleaning: identify the cushion and its fabric
Look for the care label beneath the cushion, along a seam, or inside a cover. Check the furniture maker’s care guide as well, particularly before unzipping a casing or applying bleach. Fabric type, backing, thread, coatings, and the cushion filling can all change what is safe.
- Photograph or note the label instructions before removing anything.
- Test any cleaner on a hidden area and allow it to dry before treating the visible surface.
- Protect nearby wood, metal, painted surfaces, plants, and flooring from runoff, especially if bleach is permitted for that fabric.
These instructions are a general method, not permission to override a label. If the label says professional cleaning only, follow it.

- Vacuum, soft brush, or a clean dry cloth for loose debris
- Mild soap or mild laundry detergent, as allowed by the label
- Lukewarm water
- Sponge or very soft-bristle upholstery brush
- Clean water for rinsing
- Dry towels and a well-ventilated place for air-drying

Routine cleaning for surface dirt and food stains
- Remove loose soil. Brush or vacuum crumbs, leaves, sand, and dried dirt before adding water. Take off removable accessories such as ties if their labels allow it.
- Mix a mild solution. Add mild soap to lukewarm water. Use enough soap to lift soil, not a highly concentrated mixture that leaves residue.
- Wet the fabric lightly. Work with a sponge or very soft-bristle brush. Do not saturate the cushion unnecessarily.
- Clean seam to seam. Treat the whole upholstery panel or a complete section bounded by seams instead of rubbing a small circle. Sunbrella says this can help reduce water rings and uneven residue.
- Rinse thoroughly. Use clean water until soap is gone. Leftover detergent can attract dirt and leave a visible film.
- Air-dry completely. Stand or position the cushion so air can circulate on all sides. Sunbrella’s instruction is that its fabric should only be allowed to air dry. Do not put a damp cushion into a cover, stack it, or return it to storage.
For a fresh food spill, lift solids and blot rather than grinding them into the weave. Then use the same mild-soap method after checking the label.
Removable covers versus fixed upholstery

Other outdoor textiles may require a different water temperature, detergent, cycle, or drying method. The Sunbrella settings above apply only when the label and furniture maker permit washing.

How to remove mildew from outdoor cushions
Sunbrella says its fabrics resist mildew, but mildew can grow on dirt or other material left on the fabric. Its stronger treatment is material-specific; do not apply it to every outdoor cushion by default.
Sunbrella’s stated mildew mixture
For Sunbrella fabric when the care instructions permit this treatment, mix one cup of bleach and one-quarter cup of mild soap per gallon of water. Apply it to the whole affected area, leave it for 15 minutes, then gently clean, rinse very thoroughly, and air-dry completely. Sunbrella also names Sunbrella Renew Mold & Mildew Stain Remover as an option for its fabric.

- Follow the bleach product’s label, ventilation, protective-equipment, disposal, and environmental directions.
- Keep bleach solution away from unprotected colored textiles, wood, metal, plants, pets, and children.
- Never mix bleach with ammonia, acids, or other cleaners.
- If the cushion’s label does not allow bleach, stop and use the approved method or consult a fabric-care professional.
After treatment, inspect seams, welting, and the underside. A recurring odor or growth may indicate moisture inside the filling or a storage problem that surface cleaning cannot solve.
Why pressure-washing is usually a bad idea
Lee Trethewey, a garden-furniture expert quoted in a consumer guide updated 28 May 2025, advises avoiding power-washing outdoor cushions where possible. High pressure can damage fibers or seams and force water deep into the filling, extending drying time and increasing the risk of odor or mildew. Hand cleaning gives you better control over pressure, solution strength, and the amount of water entering the cushion. Use a pressure washer only if the furniture maker specifically provides instructions for that cushion.

Drying, storage, and aftercare
- Dry cushions in moving air, turning or repositioning them so seams and undersides are not left damp.
- Do not use a cushion until the fabric and filling feel fully dry; the surface can feel dry while the interior remains wet.
- Store cushions only when completely dry, in a clean, dry, ventilated location.
- After repeated thorough cleaning or extended exposure, Sunbrella lists 303 Fabric Guard as an optional U.S. retreatment product for its fabric. It is not a required step after every wash.
If stains persist, ask a professional cleaner whether they have experience with the exact fabric and understand its cleaning and retreatment requirements. Tell them the label instructions and any products already used.

- Skipping the care label because the cushion is marketed as “outdoor.”
- Assuming a zipper means the cover is machine washable.
- Scrubbing a small spot in a tight circle, which can create a visible ring.
- Using abrasive tools or a strong cleaner on unknown fabric.
- Leaving soap in the weave after washing.
- Covering, stacking, or storing cushions before the filling is dry.
- Applying the Sunbrella bleach recipe to a different textile without that manufacturer’s approval.
