Remove visible hair, food scraps, and other debris first. If there is no commercial drain opener in the drain and the plumbing is metal, Oregon Metro recommends a household treatment of baking soda, vinegar, and boiling water: add 1/2 cup of baking soda, then 1/2 cup of vinegar, cover the opening immediately, wait 15 minutes, and flush with a full kettle of boiling water. This is a cleaning suggestion, not a guaranteed repair for a dry trap, leak, or other plumbing fault.
How to clean the drain
- Clear the opening. Remove visible hair, food scraps, and other debris. For a shower, lift off the strainer cover; for a sink, remove the stopper mechanism if needed to inspect and clear the opening. The City of Mesa recommends checking the drain this way. - Add baking soda and vinegar. Pour 1/2 cup baking soda into the drain, followed by 1/2 cup vinegar, then cover the opening immediately. This is Oregon Metro’s recipe; the City of Mesa also recommends 1/2 cup of each, but does not specify the same timing and flush details. - Wait and flush cautiously. Oregon Metro says to wait 15 minutes and then pour a full kettle of boiling water down the drain. The EPA-hosted household chemical guide limits its boiling-water recipe to metal plumbing because boiling water can melt plastic pipes. Do not add vinegar if a commercial drain opener has been used or may still be in the drain. Vinegar can react with drain opener and produce dangerous fumes, according to the EPA-hosted household chemical guide.
What to try when the smell persists
Remove the source at the opening
Hair, food scraps, and other debris can collect around the drain opening. Lift the cover or stopper where possible, remove what you can see, and consider a screen or strainer to catch debris before it enters the drain. A sink or shower that is rarely used can lose the water held in its P-trap. That water normally blocks sewer gas from entering the home; running water into an unused drain can refill the trap. Recognize when this is a plumbing issue
A strong odor across several rooms, visible plumbing damage, or a smell that returns after cleaning can point to a leak or another problem rather than debris at one drain. North Dakota Department of Environmental Quality advises professional inspection in these cases. If the odor seems to come from the water itself rather than the drain, Lincoln Water System advises contacting the water utility. For a serious clog, the EPA-hosted guide lists a rubber plunger or plumber’s snake as alternatives to chemical drain openers. Oregon Metro also mentions enzymatic cleaners and compressed-air drain tools for clog clearing; those are options for blockage, not necessary ingredients in this odor-cleaning method.
