For routine cleaning, shut down the computer or disconnect the keyboard, gently release loose crumbs, use short bursts of compressed air if the manufacturer allows it, and wipe the keys with a soft cloth that is only lightly damp. Never spray or pour liquid onto a keyboard, and wait until it is completely dry before reconnecting or powering on. A liquid spill needs a different response: stop using the device and follow the spill steps below.
Choose the safe method for your keyboard
Key removal and cleaning options depend on the design. If you are unsure, treat the keyboard as non-removable and check the manufacturer’s instructions for the exact model.

Microsoft, Apple, Logitech, Lenovo, and iFixit all advise caution around moisture and device-specific construction; their methods differ in details such as alcohol concentration and compressed-air use. Follow your keyboard or laptop maker’s guidance first.

Gather a few basic supplies
Most routine cleaning does not require a branded kit. A clean microfiber or other lint-free cloth, cotton swabs, and—if approved for your device—a can of compressed air are usually enough.

- For compatible mechanical keyboards: a keycap puller and a small container for removed keycaps.
- For wiping: water or a manufacturer-approved cleaning product, used sparingly on the cloth or swab—not sprayed onto the keyboard.
Routine cleaning: remove dust, crumbs, and surface grime
- Power down first. Unplug a wired keyboard. Switch off a wireless keyboard and remove its batteries if they are removable. Shut down a laptop and disconnect it from power. This also prevents accidental keystrokes, wake-ups, or shortcuts while you work.
- Release loose debris. Hold an external keyboard at an angle or upside down and tap it gently over a clear surface. Do not shake or strike it forcefully.
- Clear between keys. If the manufacturer permits compressed air, keep the can upright and use brief bursts across or between keys, holding it at a small distance unless the device instructions say otherwise. Stop if moisture or liquid propellant appears. A soft brush is another gentle option.
- Wipe the keys and case. Lightly moisten a lint-free cloth with water or an approved cleaner. It should not drip. Wipe key tops and sides, then the case or palm rest. Use a cotton swab around key edges, with minimal moisture.
- Let it dry fully. Keep liquid away from openings, switches, ports, speakers, indicator lights, laptop hinges, and other gaps. Do not reconnect or power on until the cleaned surfaces are completely dry.
Microsoft recommends gentle upside-down tapping and compressed air for its keyboards; Apple and Logitech recommend a soft, lint-free cloth lightly moistened with water for specified products. Their instructions are not universal substitutes for your model’s manual: Microsoft keyboard cleaning, Apple keyboard cleaning, and Logitech device cleaning.
Clean between keys without forcing anything underneath
For dust or crumbs, repeat the gentle tilt, tap, air, or soft-brush method rather than inserting a sharp object. A purpose-designed keyboard vacuum can be used gently on the surface, but it is optional; avoid aggressive suction that could snag keycaps. Lenovo discusses gentle vacuuming and brushing in its keyboard cleaning guidance.
For sticky residue at a key edge, use a cotton swab barely moistened with a cleaner approved for the device. Do not push the swab beneath a key or let liquid pool around a switch. If a key remains sticky or unresponsive, stop increasing pressure or moisture; the cause may be inside the switch, membrane, or device.
Deep-clean a compatible mechanical keyboard
Keycap removal is appropriate only when the keyboard is designed for it and the maker’s instructions permit it. Removable keycaps do not mean every key is safe to pull: large keys such as Space, Shift, Enter, and Backspace may have stabilizers or retainers that are easy to damage.

- Disconnect the keyboard and photograph the layout, or keep a reliable layout reference nearby.
- Use a compatible keycap puller to remove only supported keycaps. Consult the manual or a model-specific guide before removing stabilized keys.
- If permitted for the keycap material and legends, wash keycaps separately in warm water with a small amount of mild soap.
- Rinse and dry the keycaps completely before reinstalling them. Do not put wet keycaps back on the keyboard.
- With keycaps off, use brief air bursts, a soft brush, or a minimally damp cotton swab on the exposed plate. Do not pour liquid into switches or immerse the keyboard body.
- Replace each keycap in its original orientation once everything is dry.
Lenovo describes warm, soapy water for removable mechanical keycaps, while iFixit cautions that retainers can be fragile and recommends documenting orientation: Lenovo’s keyboard guide and iFixit’s keyboard guide.
Take extra care with a laptop keyboard
Laptop keys commonly use low-profile scissor mechanisms with small clips. They may come off, but that does not mean they can be removed and reattached safely. iFixit notes that laptop keycaps and retainers can be fragile. Unless the manufacturer’s service instructions support removal, leave the keys in place.
- Shut down and unplug the laptop before cleaning.
- Use gentle tilting, brief air bursts only if the manufacturer permits them, and a nearly dry cloth.
- Use cotton swabs around key edges; do not insert tools underneath.
- Keep moisture away from the touchpad, power button, fingerprint reader, speakers, ports, and hinge.
- If a key remains stuck or stops responding, do not keep prying or adding cleaner; seek model-specific service advice.
Microsoft’s Surface guidance describes a particular laptop-keyboard cleaning procedure, including its own drying instruction; do not generalize that timing to other devices or to spills: Microsoft Surface laptop-keyboard guidance.

Use alcohol or disinfecting wipes only when compatible
Cleaning removes visible dirt and oils. Disinfecting uses a product intended to reduce microorganisms and requires following that product’s label. A surface wipe does not, by itself, establish that a keyboard has been disinfected to a specified microbiological standard.
Alcohol guidance varies by manufacturer and device. Microsoft’s general keyboard page permits an IPA solution of 70% or less on a lint-free cloth, while its Surface article lists IPA at 70% or higher. Apple permits 70% isopropyl alcohol wipes and 75% ethyl alcohol wipes on specified hard, nonporous surfaces, and Logitech advises testing products because alcohol can affect finishes or printed legends. Use only the product and concentration your device maker permits. If the instructions do not specify a product, avoid assuming stronger alcohol is better; use the least moisture possible, test an inconspicuous area, and avoid printed legends and painted finishes.

Keep these cleaners and methods away
- Do not spray cleaner directly onto keys or pour any liquid into the keyboard.
- Do not submerge a keyboard unless the exact manufacturer instructions explicitly permit that procedure.
- Avoid bleach, acetone, strong solvents, abrasive powders, scouring pads, rough paper towels, ammonia-based cleaners, and household degreasers unless the manufacturer specifically approves a particular product.
- Do not use knives, screwdrivers, or other sharp tools to pry up keycaps.
- Do not use heat from a hair dryer. Logitech lists cool air as an alternative to compressed air for some cleaning situations; if using that method, use cool air only, keep it moving, and follow the device maker’s instructions.
- Do not power on a keyboard that is still wet.
Apple warns against direct spraying, solvents, and abrasives in its product guidance; Logitech also warns against bleach, acetone, strong solvents, abrasives, and submersion: Apple cleaning guidance and Logitech cleaning guidance.

A spill is not the same as surface grime. Liquid can reach electronics, and evaporation does not remove residue left by sugary, milky, alcoholic, or acidic drinks. A device that appears to work at first may still develop problems later.
- Disconnect an external keyboard immediately. If a laptop is involved, shut it down immediately and disconnect power.
- Remove a removable battery only if it is safe and straightforward to do so.
- Position the device so liquid can drain away from electronics, and blot visible liquid. Do not keep typing or repeatedly press keys.
- Do not power it back on just to test it, and do not use rice or heat as a fix.
- If liquid may have entered a laptop or keyboard, contact the manufacturer or a repair professional. Laptop liquid damage can affect components beyond the keyboard, and professional inspection may be safer than removing keys yourself.
There is no universal drying time that makes a spill safe: the result depends on the amount and type of liquid, the device construction, and whether liquid entered the interior.

Clean based on use and visible buildup
There is no single schedule for every keyboard. Clean when dust, crumbs, oils, or shared-use hygiene needs warrant it, while using the least aggressive method that solves the problem. Microsoft suggests monthly or as-needed cleaning for its keyboards, and Logitech describes different intervals depending on use and device condition; treat those as maker guidance for their own products, not a rule for every model: Microsoft and Logitech.
