Clean an empty dishwasher in two separate cycles: run white vinegar first, then baking soda. Whirlpool’s method uses 2 cups (500 mL) of white vinegar in a dishwasher-safe container on the lower rack, with no detergent and heat dry turned off. After that cycle, sprinkle 1 cup of baking soda across the dishwasher floor and run a hot-water cycle. Never combine the two ingredients in one cycle, and check your dishwasher’s Use & Care guide before starting because manufacturers specify different amounts and placement.
Before you start
- Empty the racks and remove visible food from the tub and bottom.
- Clean the filter first if your model has a removable one. Whirlpool notes that some filters are not designed to be removed, so consult the manual rather than forcing it.
- Confirm that your owner’s manual permits a vinegar rinse. Appliance-specific instructions take priority over a general recipe.
- Use plain white vinegar, not detergent or a scented additive.
Whirlpool’s vinegar-and-baking-soda method
1. Run the vinegar cycle
- Pour 2 cups (500 mL) of white vinegar into a glass measuring cup or another dishwasher-safe container.
- Stand the container upright on the lower rack. Do not pour the vinegar directly into the detergent dispenser.
- Leave the detergent cup empty and select a normal, complete wash cycle.
- Turn heat dry off; use the air-dry or energy-saving option if your controls provide it.
2. Run the baking-soda cycle
- When the vinegar cycle ends, remove the container.
- Sprinkle 1 cup of baking soda over the bottom of the dishwasher.
- Run a hot-water cycle. Do not add detergent.
Whirlpool presents these as sequential cycles, not a combined treatment. Mixing vinegar and baking soda in the tub neutralizes their initial acid-and-alkali reaction and is not the manufacturer’s cleaning procedure.
Why the amount and placement are not universal
Brand instructions differ, so do not transfer Whirlpool’s two-cup recipe to every dishwasher. GE Appliances describes a different vinegar rinse: 1 cup, added just after the detergent cup opens, and repeated only several times a year if needed. That is not the same placement or cycle as Whirlpool’s upright container on the lower rack.

If your manual gives another quantity, location, cycle, or product recommendation, use that instruction instead.

What to do if odor or residue remains
Check the filter and sump area
Food particles trapped in the filter can continue to smell after a cleaning cycle. Clean only parts your manual identifies as removable, and reinstall the filter securely before washing dishes.
Inspect spray arms and interior surfaces
Persistent deposits may require attention to the spray arms or other removable components. Do not poke blocked openings with a sharp object unless the manufacturer specifically permits that method.

Consider a purpose-made cleaner
Whirlpool identifies affresh Dishwasher Cleaner as an option for buildup and odors, while GE names Finish Dishwasher Cleaner and also mentions citric acid for dishwasher cleaning. Use a product only when it is compatible with your model and follow its label and the owner’s manual. Manufacturer guidance does not establish one universally best cleaner for every type of soil.

Cleaning frequency depends on the task, model, water conditions, and how heavily the machine is used. The following intervals come from different manufacturers and are not one universal schedule.

For a dishwasher that is functioning normally, follow your own manufacturer’s maintenance calendar rather than increasing vinegar treatments on a fixed schedule.

When vinegar and baking soda are the wrong choice
- Your manual prohibits acidic cleaners: use the approved machine-care product instead.
- You have hard-water film or mineral scale: a manufacturer-approved cleaner may be more appropriate than repeating vinegar.
- The dishwasher still leaves dishes dirty: investigate the filter, spray arms, loading pattern, water temperature, and detergent guidance; a deodorizing cycle will not correct a mechanical fault.
- You cannot identify a removable part: stop and check the Use & Care guide before disassembly.
Quick checklist
- Empty dishwasher and remove loose food.
- Check the manual and clean the filter only if removal is approved.
- Run Whirlpool’s 2-cup vinegar cycle with no detergent and heat dry off, if your model permits it.
- Run a separate hot-water cycle with 1 cup of baking soda.
- Do not combine vinegar and baking soda in one cycle.
- Use a compatible dishwasher cleaner according to its label when the manual recommends one or mineral residue persists.
