Choose a storage box or basket by measuring the space it will occupy, checking that the item fits inside, and deciding whether you need quick access or concealed storage. The right choice can organize household items while contributing to a room’s appearance.
Start with the space and the items
Measure the shelf, cupboard, floor area or gap beneath furniture where the container will go. Then compare those measurements with the container’s external dimensions. Check its internal dimensions too: walls, handles and lids can reduce usable space, and the stored item must fit through the opening.
- For a shelf or cabinet, allow for the space needed to lift or pull the container out.
- For storage beneath furniture, check the available height and whether a lid or handle adds to the container’s overall dimensions.
- For bulky items such as blankets, compare the interior space with the items loosely folded rather than assuming the outside dimensions tell the whole story.
Beliani’s storage guide likewise advises choosing a size according to both what you intend to store and where the container will sit. Its examples of household contents include books, toys, accessories, blankets, laundry and everyday essentials.
Choose open access or a lid

An open basket keeps its contents visible and easy to reach, which can suit frequently used items. It also means the contents remain on display, so consider whether that suits the room and how you want the space to look.

Think about whether the container will be visible and how its color, texture and shape will sit with nearby furniture and finishes.

Do not assume that a material is suitable for damp areas, easy to clean, strong enough for a particular load or especially long-lasting based on its name or appearance. Check the product’s own care and use information before choosing a container for a moisture-exposed location or heavy contents.

Plan by room and purpose
- Living areas: Use a basket or box sized for the items you want to gather, such as books, accessories or blankets. Decide whether you want those items visible or covered.
- Children’s spaces: Match the container’s opening and dimensions to the toys being stored and the available floor or shelf space.
- Laundry areas: Check that the container is intended for the items and location in question; do not infer suitability for damp laundry from the broad label “basket.”
- Bedrooms and cupboards: Measure drawers, shelves or under-bed clearance before selecting boxes for clothing or household essentials.
A quick selection checklist
- List the items to store and whether you need to reach them often.
- Measure the intended location, including the clearance needed to remove the container or open its lid.
- Check the product’s external and internal dimensions.
- Choose an open basket for convenient access or a lidded design when concealment and dust protection matter more.
