You can 3D print a large decorative sphere without supports by making it as two interlocking, hollow C-shaped shells and printing each in vase mode. The spiralized, single-wall construction keeps material use low; ribs help steady the thin shells. The trade-off is strength: this is a lightweight ornament or lampshade-like object, not a precision ball or a load-bearing part.
Why a sphere usually needs support
As a conventional sphere rises from its widest point toward the top, each new layer extends farther over the layer below. Those increasingly steep overhangs can sag or fail unless the print uses supports or a geometry designed around the problem. A one-piece sphere may also need a flattened base, a raft or brim, or a carefully chosen orientation.
Splitting a sphere at the equator gives two familiar hemispheres, but that is not the construction used here. The Giant Spiralized Sphere by DaveMakesStuff uses two interlocking C-shaped shells, described as resembling the halves of a tennis ball. Their shape is designed for spiralized printing rather than simply cutting a sphere in half.
How the C-shell and vase-mode design works
Vase mode—also called spiralize or spiralized mode—prints a rising spiral as one continuous outer wall. It omits ordinary infill and generally does not support multiple perimeter walls in the usual way. The model must have geometry that the slicer can follow as a continuous wall; a suitable shape matters as much as the setting.

The sphere’s ribs are part of that design, not just decoration. They stiffen the thin shell and help it resist fluttering or deforming while it is printed. They also add a visible texture. The available project description does not establish that the ribs eliminate every overhang or guarantee a successful print, so first-layer adhesion, steady extrusion, cooling and careful handling still matter.
Because the result is a single-wall shell, it is light and material-efficient but less impact-resistant than a conventionally sliced part with several walls or infill. The designer describes the glued assembly as surprisingly strong, but that is an informal observation, not a measured strength rating.
What the featured model requires
The designer’s model page describes a sphere approximately 25 cm in diameter, made from two pieces, with about 220 g of filament reported for the referenced design. Treat that weight as a model-specific estimate: scaling, skirts or brims, extrusion settings, purge material and failed attempts can change actual consumption.

Check the model page for current file access and licensing terms before downloading, remixing, selling prints or redistributing files. The page indicates licensing or access restrictions, and those terms can change. The designer also links a demonstration at YouTube.
Check your printer and prepare the files
Do not assume that a printer can fit the parts just because the finished sphere is about 25 cm across. Each shell has its own footprint and height, and fit depends on orientation and usable build volume. Import both files into the slicer and check each part’s bounding box against the printer’s usable X, Y and Z dimensions before committing to a long print. A 220 × 220 mm bed may not accommodate a full-size half in every orientation.
Keep each part in its supplied orientation unless the model instructions say otherwise. Confirm that both are on the plate without overlapping. If you scale them, inspect the fit of the interlocking features as well as the overall dimensions: shrinking can make ribs or joints too small or tight, while enlarging can produce a larger, more fragile shell and a longer print.

Set up the slicer
- Import both STL files. Confirm that neither part is outside the build area or overlapping the other.
- Enable spiralized printing. In Cura, the setting is called “Spiralize Outer Contour.” Other slicers may use “Vase Mode,” “Spiral Vase” or “Spiralize.” Labels and behavior vary by slicer and version.
- Set one bottom layer. This matches the designer’s model-specific recommendation.
- Start at a layer height of 0.2 mm or greater. This is the designer’s recommendation for this model, not a universal setting for every printer or nozzle.
- Begin with a skirt. The designer recommends a skirt; use a brim if the first layer is not holding reliably.
- Preview the sliced toolpath. Check that each shell rises as a continuous spiral and that the slicer has not added unexpected infill or top layers, or produced disconnected wall behavior.
- Slice and review the estimate. Confirm that the parts fit the plate and that the estimated material and time are acceptable before printing.
There is no verified universal temperature, speed, cooling, nozzle diameter or line width for this project. Tune those to your printer, material and slicer. A wider line may make a single wall stronger or more opaque, while a smaller nozzle may reproduce finer ribs; either choice must remain compatible with the model’s wall geometry and the slicer’s spiral mode.

PLA is a sensible starting material for an ornamental sphere because it is generally easier to print than PETG. Translucent PLA or PETG can suit a decorative illuminated effect, and multicolor filament can make the spiral ribs more prominent. None guarantees a clear, evenly glowing surface: ribs, layer lines, extrusion width and the position of the light all affect the result.
Hackaday’s coverage discusses PETG transparency and notes that overextrusion and higher temperature can affect bonding and appearance. That is context, not a validated universal PETG profile. PETG can bring more stringing, adhesion and temperature-tuning challenges than PLA. Do not assume the finished sphere is watertight, food-safe, outdoor-safe or suitable for a lamp installation; none of those properties is established for this model.

Print carefully and watch for failure signs
Watch the first layer closely, then keep the printer and print area undisturbed. The tall, thin shell and ribs are vulnerable to contact: a nozzle catch or bump can bend a rib, detach the part or spoil a long print. Secure loose cables and avoid touching the machine while the shell is rising.
- If the base starts lifting: stop before the shell grows much taller. Clean and re-level the build surface, check first-layer adhesion, slow the first layer or modestly increase first-layer squish if appropriate for your machine. Add a brim if a skirt is not enough, and reduce drafts or temperature swings. Choose bed temperature for the filament and printer rather than copying an unrelated profile.
- If the nozzle catches a rib or wall: stop the print and inspect for warping, a loose base or an earlier collision. Continuing can turn a small defect into a failed print.
- If stringing appears near the top: the model page suggests adjusting seam alignment. Treat that as a way to move or reduce the visibility of an artifact, not a complete tuning fix. Wet filament, excessive temperature and retraction behavior in spiralized mode can also contribute.
- If the sliced part does not fit: change orientation only if the model instructions allow it, or scale both pieces consistently and inspect the joint. A scale change can affect wall delicacy and fit as well as overall size.
- If the shell seems too delicate for its intended use: do not rely on the ribs as a structural rating. Consider a different design with conventional multiple walls or use the C-shell as a decorative object only.
Fit and finish the two halves
Test-fit the halves before using adhesive. The designer says they fit together loosely, so a dry fit lets you check alignment and decide whether a reversible assembly is sufficient. A loose fit is useful for storage or transport, but the halves may separate or leave a visible seam.

For a permanent joint, the designer recommends cyanoacrylate (CA) glue. Align the parts first, then apply a small amount; an internal bead can reduce visible residue where the joint allows it. Avoid flooding the seam. CA can leave whitening or fogging, especially noticeable on translucent filament. Light sanding or paint may help finish the seam, but sand cautiously because the wall is thin. A custom remix could use a keyed joint or interlocking lip for more controlled alignment.

If you add illumination, use a low-heat battery-powered LED or similar suitable module and provide access for installation. The project is a decorative print, not a certified lighting fixture; do not place mains-powered hardware inside the plastic shell without addressing electrical and heat safety.
When this method is—and is not—a good choice
- Good fit: lightweight ornaments, decorative spheres, translucent illuminated objects and large forms where low material use or a ribbed surface is desirable.
- Poor fit: bouncing balls, pressure-bearing containers, outdoor parts exposed to impact or weather, precision spheres, smooth seamless surfaces, or components that need substantial wall thickness, infill or load capacity.
For a more robust or smoother part, print conventional hemispheres with thicker walls and any required internal features, accepting the need to finish the seam and possibly manage supports. A supported one-piece print avoids a joining seam but adds support-removal work and can leave surface marks. Faceted or geodesic designs, ring-built spheres and multi-part panels are other support-conscious options, usually with a different look or more assembly. Resin printing can produce a smooth sphere, but it has its own orientation, support, washing, curing and resin-handling requirements; it is not a direct substitute for this low-material FDM approach.
