Power semiconductors help appliances use electricity more effectively by converting and controlling it with less loss. They are the switching devices inside motor drives, compressor inverters, induction cooktops and power supplies. Their biggest efficiency contribution is often enabling a motor or compressor to run at the speed the appliance needs instead of cycling between full power and off. The result depends on the complete appliance—not the semiconductor alone.

What power semiconductors do

A power semiconductor switches or regulates substantial electrical power. Unlike a component handling only a small signal, it must manage the voltage and current used by a motor, compressor, heater or other load. A typical appliance may combine several devices and control circuits to convert mains electricity into the form its components need.

  • Power MOSFETs switch quickly and are common in lower- and medium-power converters and high-frequency designs.
  • IGBTs are used in higher-voltage or higher-power switching, including motor drives and induction heating.
  • Diodes rectify alternating current or provide current paths in switching circuits.
  • Gate-driver ICs provide the signals needed to switch MOSFETs and IGBTs safely.
  • Intelligent power modules (IPMs) package power switches with gate drivers and protection, and may include current or temperature sensing.
  • Power-control microcontrollers generate switching signals and manage motor control, sensor inputs and fault protection.
  • Silicon carbide (SiC) and gallium nitride (GaN) are wide-bandgap semiconductor technologies that can enable lower switching losses or higher switching frequencies in suitable designs.

The devices work as a system: Infineon’s home-appliance portfolio, for example, spans switches, modules, drivers, control microcontrollers, sensors and auxiliary power supplies (Infineon’s appliance applications).

Sensors and a controller monitor the appliance and adjust the switching stage. A separate low-power supply may provide electricity to the display, control board, wireless connection and sensors. Depending on the appliance, power semiconductors may also be found in fan drives, pumps, electronic valves, LED lighting drivers and battery chargers.

That makes appliance efficiency a power-architecture problem, not a matter of choosing one “efficient chip.” Switching devices interact with the controller, motor, compressor, heat exchanger, magnetics, circuit-board layout, cooling and software. A weakness elsewhere can erase a component-level improvement.

Why variable-speed operation can save energy

Fixed-speed operation

A fixed-speed motor or compressor typically runs at one operating speed. When the appliance needs output, it switches on; once the set point is reached, it switches off. The appliance may deliver more heating, cooling or mechanical output than needed at that moment, then cycle again. Starts and stops can bring electrical and mechanical losses as well as temperature swings and noise.

Variable-speed operation

An inverter first creates a controllable DC supply, then uses power switches to produce variable-frequency electricity for a motor. The controller can adjust speed and torque to match demand. Instead of alternating between maximum output and no output, the appliance can run for longer at reduced output.

That approach can improve part-load operation, temperature control and noise, but it is not an automatic energy-saving guarantee. The U.S. Department of Energy’s refrigerator technical-support document explains that variable-speed compressors can better match thermal loads, reduce off-cycle losses and improve heat-exchanger effectiveness; it also warns that additional fan operation can offset some savings (DOE refrigerator technical-support document). Poor control tuning, inefficient motors or auxiliary loads can also undermine the benefit.

How the benefits vary by appliance

Refrigerators and freezers

Inverter drives can modulate compressor speed as cooling demand changes. Electronic fan drives, sensor-based temperature controls, adaptive defrost and controlled anti-sweat heating can further help manage energy use. Variable-speed operation is often useful at low loads, when a fixed-speed compressor might otherwise cycle unnecessarily.

ENERGY STAR identifies variable-speed compressors and brushless-DC evaporator fan motors as design options that can reduce refrigerator energy use (ENERGY STAR refrigerator framework). Its advanced-compressor criteria describe a particular combination of an inverter compressor and sensor-driven capacity modulation, and cite at least a 25% per-unit efficiency increase under the program’s comparison framework. That figure is not a universal saving for every inverter refrigerator (ENERGY STAR advanced-compressor criteria).

Actual refrigerator energy use also depends on insulation, refrigerant-circuit design, ambient temperature, door openings, fan power and control settings. An efficient compressor cannot make up for a poor overall refrigeration system.

Air conditioners and heat pumps

Power semiconductors regulate compressor speed as well as indoor and outdoor fans. They also support pumps, reversing valves and defrost control. Onsemi describes a heat-pump compressor inverter as converting AC into controlled DC and then variable-frequency AC, so the compressor’s speed and torque can respond to heating or cooling demand (Onsemi compressor-inverter diagram).

Seasonal performance depends on more than the inverter: climate, installation, ductwork, refrigerant charge, defrost behavior and control strategy all matter. Cold-weather operation can create thermal and control constraints that outweigh small differences in semiconductor losses. A more efficient power module alone does not establish a heat pump’s seasonal efficiency.

Packaging advances can make inverter hardware more compact. Mitsubishi Electric announced 600-V, 30-A and 50-A DIPIPM samples for consumer and industrial equipment on September 11, 2025, with a footprint about 53% that of conventional products. That is a module-footprint comparison, not a claim that an appliance uses 47% less energy (Mitsubishi Electric announcement).

Washing machines and dryers

Motor drives control drum speed and torque, from slow agitation to high-speed spin. Power electronics may also control pumps, recirculation systems, dryer blowers and, in a heat-pump dryer, the compressor. Accurate control can reduce noise and vibration; a faster spin may also leave less moisture for a separate dryer to remove.

But drive efficiency is only one part of laundry energy use. Water heating, drying, cycle duration and spin performance can dominate. A long, low-power cycle is not necessarily more efficient if pumps, controls and other auxiliaries remain active for longer. Infineon lists drum, heat-pump and water-pump inverter control among appliance applications (Infineon 2025 Home Appliances Selection Guide).

Induction cooktops

An induction cooktop rectifies mains electricity and uses a high-frequency inverter to energize a coil. The coil’s magnetic field induces current in compatible cookware, heating the pan directly. Power switches, a resonant circuit and the controller work together to regulate cooking power, detect pans and provide overcurrent and thermal protection.

ENERGY STAR reports induction cooktops as approximately 5–10% more efficient than conventional electric-resistance units and about three times as efficient as gas on its stated per-unit comparison (ENERGY STAR induction cooking information). This is not a promise of a threefold reduction in household energy costs: fuel prices, cookware, cooking behavior and the measurement boundary affect the comparison. Induction requires compatible cookware, and its switching electronics must be designed to manage electromagnetic interference and possible audible noise.

Dishwashers and water-heating appliances

Switching devices control heating elements, circulation and drain pumps, fans and auxiliary electronics. Yet the main efficiency gains may come from using less water, recovering heat, improving insulation or optimizing the cycle—not from changing the semiconductor that switches the heater. Here, power electronics enable control, but they may not be the largest lever on total energy use.

Small and connected appliances

Power semiconductors also appear in vacuum-cleaner motor drives, air-purifier fans, microwave power supplies, coffee-machine heaters, robotic-vacuum chargers and LED drivers. In connected appliances, low-power supplies and sleep-state controls affect standby consumption. The absolute energy at stake may be small for an individual low-power device, but electronics can still matter for compactness, noise and control precision.

What determines semiconductor losses

Conduction and switching losses

A conducting device dissipates power through its resistance or voltage drop. For a MOSFET, conduction loss is approximately proportional to current squared times its on-resistance, often written as I²RDS(on). An IGBT’s conduction loss is commonly related to its collector-emitter voltage drop and current. Lower conduction loss means less heat to remove.

Switching loss occurs during transitions between on and off. It generally rises with switching frequency, voltage, current, transition time, device capacitance and gate-drive losses. SiC or GaN may reduce losses or allow higher-frequency operation in an appropriate design, but a datasheet figure cannot be translated directly into a household energy-saving percentage. Voltage, current, temperature, switching frequency, load and circuit topology all matter.

Other losses and thermal effects

In bridge and inverter circuits, diode reverse recovery can add losses and electromagnetic interference. Suitable fast diodes, SiC Schottky diodes, reverse-conducting IGBTs or synchronous rectification can help, depending on the circuit. Gate drivers, dead time, sensing, protection and auxiliary supplies consume power too.

Reduced device losses can lower cooling needs, shrink heatsinks or help a designer fit more power into a smaller module. But less hardware volume is not itself proof of lower appliance energy use. Nor does lower average loss remove thermal stress from repeated heating and cooling.

Choosing between silicon, SiC, GaN and modules

There is no universal winner. The choice depends on power level, voltage, load profile, operating frequency, cost, thermal design and the control system. The following are typical tendencies, not fixed rules for every topology.

Technology Strengths Common appliance uses Trade-offs
Silicon MOSFET Mature, widely available and fast-switching Auxiliary supplies and lower- or medium-power conversion and motor drives Resistance and voltage capability involve trade-offs
Silicon IGBT Established option for higher-voltage and higher-current switching Air conditioners, washers, dryers and induction cookers Switching loss can be higher than with many MOSFET or SiC alternatives
SiC MOSFET Can offer low switching loss, high-temperature capability and high-voltage operation Selected premium HVAC, heat-pump, induction and high-power designs Cost, gate-drive and layout demands, and EMI need consideration
GaN HEMT Fast switching can support high frequency, compact magnetics and high power density Compact supplies and selected motor-control or induction designs Layout, EMI, gate-drive, voltage-range and reliability requirements can constrain use
Integrated power module Can combine switches, drivers and protection in a compact, predictable assembly High-volume appliance inverter boards Less design flexibility and potential dependence on a particular supplier; board-level repair may be costly

Infineon’s appliance selection guide lists silicon IGBTs and MOSFETs alongside SiC, GaN and integrated modules across application types, reflecting the range of design needs rather than a move to a single technology (selection guide). Mitsubishi Electric’s April 15, 2025 announcement likewise described silicon RC-IGBT, hybrid-SiC and full-SiC options in an appliance-oriented module family (Mitsubishi Electric SiC module announcement).

How appliance efficiency is measured

Efficiency can refer to several different points in the chain: the switching device, inverter, motor, compressor, useful heat transfer or the appliance’s annual or seasonal energy use. These are not interchangeable. A more efficient inverter may save little if it operates only briefly, while a modest improvement in a component used for many hours could matter more over the year.

  • Device efficiency describes a semiconductor under specified electrical and thermal conditions.
  • Power-stage efficiency includes switches, drivers and other conversion components at a particular load.
  • Appliance energy use reflects the whole product under a defined test cycle or usage profile.
  • Seasonal HVAC efficiency captures performance across varying loads and conditions more usefully than a peak-only figure.
  • Standby power matters for connected appliances whose controls and radios remain available when the main function is idle.

In the United States, the Department of Energy sets test procedures and energy-efficiency standards for more than 70 product categories, including appliances, motors and heat pumps (DOE standards and test procedures). For buyers, appliance-level energy labels or certified annual-use figures are more useful than a semiconductor’s material name.

Design trade-offs and failure modes

For designers, the right power stage follows the real operating profile rather than its peak rating alone. Key checks include load variation, voltage and current limits, switching frequency, thermal path, sensor accuracy, control quality, fault protection, EMI, acoustic noise, reliability, repair strategy and lifetime cost. A faster switch can reduce conversion losses yet raise EMI and layout demands; an integrated module can simplify design while reducing flexibility.

  • Auxiliary and standby loads: Displays, sensors, networking and cooling fans add energy use; connected features can increase standby draw if sleep states are poorly managed.
  • Part-load mismatch: A design optimized for peak efficiency may perform poorly where the appliance spends most of its time at low load.
  • Grid disturbances: Surges, brownouts and harmonics can stress the rectifier, DC link and switching stage.
  • Substitution risk: Replacing a MOSFET, IGBT, SiC or GaN device without checking gate voltage, switching speed, parasitic inductance, short-circuit behavior and thermal interface can cause failure.
  • Repairability: An IPM can reduce manufacturing complexity, but an integrated-module failure may make board repair or replacement more expensive.

What consumers should look for

Terms such as “digital inverter,” “smart inverter,” “eco inverter” and “variable speed” are not interchangeable standards. Check what actually varies—the compressor, fan, pump or another load—and compare whole-appliance performance rather than relying on a technology label.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Compare certified annual energy use or seasonal efficiency for the relevant appliance category.
  • Match capacity and operating conditions to your needs; climate, installation and actual usage affect HVAC performance.
  • Consider noise, warranty, repair support and service life alongside energy consumption.
  • For induction, check cookware compatibility and use the appliance-level energy information available.
  • For connected devices, consider standby consumption as well as operating energy.

The scale of the issue extends beyond one appliance: the IEA’s 2026 policy analysis estimates that appliances account for 45% of electricity demand in buildings and nearly 3 gigatons of CO₂ emissions globally. It says appliances would need to become 30–40% more efficient to support a doubling of annual energy-intensity improvement by 2030 (IEA appliance efficiency policy toolkit). Those are global policy-analysis figures, not measurements for a particular country or product.
