Most robot vacuums provide about four to six years of useful service, according to broad manufacturer guidance from ECOVACS and Dyson. That is a planning estimate, not a guaranteed industry average. Batteries commonly lose noticeable capacity sooner—roughly after two to four years—while heavy daily use, pets, carpet, moisture, poor maintenance, unavailable parts and complex docks can shorten the economic life of the whole system.
The short answer: plan for four to six years
A lightly used, well-maintained robot may last five or six years or longer. A typical household should plan around four to six years. Daily heavy cleaning in a pet- and carpet-heavy home, neglected filters and brushes, repeated collisions or wet debris can make failure—or an uneconomic repair—arrive in roughly two to four years.
These ranges come from manufacturer guidance rather than standardized independent failure testing. “Lifespan” also has several meanings:
- Battery service life: how long the battery retains enough capacity for normal cleaning.
- Mechanical service life: how long motors, wheels, sensors, electronics and the dock function.
- Economic life: how long parts and repairs remain sensible compared with a replacement.
- Support life: how long the manufacturer supplies parts, repairs and usable app support.
A robot can still run after four to six years but no longer be worth repairing if its dock, navigation hardware or proprietary parts are unavailable.

The battery may weaken before the vacuum fails
Runtime per charge is not the same as battery service life. Runtime changes with suction mode, floor type, room layout, brush resistance, temperature, battery age and simultaneous mopping. Dyson’s guidance places typical battery-performance decline at approximately two to four years, depending on use and conditions.
Signs of a worn battery include:
- The robot stops before finishing areas it previously cleaned.
- It returns to the dock repeatedly to recharge.
- Runtime drops sharply rather than gradually.
- It cannot hold a charge or reports charging errors.
- The battery or robot becomes unusually hot.
Check the manual to see whether the battery is user-replaceable; ECOVACS specifically advises this step. A swollen, cracked or overheating lithium-ion battery should be taken out of service. Do not puncture it or put it in household rubbish—contact the manufacturer or an appropriate battery-recycling or hazardous-waste service.
What usually wears out first?
| Component | Typical symptoms | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Filter | Weak airflow, dusty exhaust, poorer pickup | Clean or replace as the manual permits |
| Main roller and side brush | Hair tangles, noisy bearings, deformed bristles | Remove hair and replace worn parts |
| Battery | Short runs, repeated recharge cycles | Verify contacts and settings, then price an official replacement |
| Wheels and caster | Slipping, drifting, failure to climb thresholds | Clear hair and grit; replace assemblies if available |
| Charging dock and contacts | Robot fails to dock or charge | Clean contacts and check dock placement and power |
| Sensors and navigation hardware | Map errors, missed rooms, repeated collisions | Clean sensors, check the map and update software before assuming hardware failure |
| Suction motor and electronics | Persistent weak suction, error codes or shutdowns | Rule out blockages; service is usually more expensive |
| Mopping hardware | Leaks, odours, poor water flow or drying | Clean tanks, seals, washboards, pumps and rollers; replacement may be costly |
Filters and brushes are inexpensive wear items. The battery is often the first major performance bottleneck. On vacuum-and-mop models, the dock can be as important—and as complex—as the robot itself.

What shortens a robot vacuum’s life?
- Heavy daily use: more brush rotations, wheel movement, charging cycles and filter loading.
- Pets and long hair: hair wraps rollers, side brushes, wheel axles and bearings.
- Carpet and high-power modes: increase energy use and brush and motor load.
- Wet debris or spills: can damage electronics and create odours or leaks in combo models.
- Clutter and thresholds: repeated collisions, getting stuck and dragging cords add wear.
- Heat, moisture and poor storage: are hard on batteries and electronics.
- Missing parts or software support: can make a functioning robot uneconomic to own.
Daily cleaning is not automatically harmful; robots designed for automation can handle it. The practical requirement is more frequent maintenance and a model with available consumables and service.
Maintenance that extends useful life
Use the model manual first. Intervals vary with pets, flooring and cleaning frequency, and not every filter is washable.
After each run or several times a week
- Empty the onboard bin unless the dock does it.
- Remove hair, string and fibres from the roller and side brush.
- Make sure the robot can reach and seat on its dock.
- Check the dock bag or water tanks.
Weekly
- Clean or replace the filter as directed.
- Inspect wheels, caster, brush bearings and the dust path.
- Wipe charging contacts and cliff, wall and camera sensors using the approved method.
- Inspect the dock inlet, air channel and wash components on docked systems.
Monthly or when symptoms appear
- Clear hair from wheel axles and brush ends.
- Clean mop rollers, washboards, tanks, seals and drainage areas.
- Look for overheating, leaks, unusual noises and repeated navigation errors.
- Check the app for error codes, firmware notices and consumable warnings.
Intervals are model-specific. For example, ECOVACS gives one DEEBOT X11 OmniCyclone family an example of replacing a roller mop every one to two months and a side brush every three to six months; do not apply those intervals to every robot.
What to check before buying
1. Battery and consumable availability
Confirm that the manufacturer sells a battery—or provides an official repair route—for the exact model. Also verify prices and availability for rollers, side brushes, filters, wheels, mop parts, dust bags, tanks and dock components. The iRobot accessories store illustrates the advantage of a searchable, model-specific parts catalogue.

2. Warranty and service
Read coverage for the robot and dock separately, and check battery and wear-item exclusions. In the United States, iRobot says eligible products carry a limited one-year warranty. ECOVACS generally excludes normal wear, ageing and consumables such as batteries and side brushes unless a defect is involved, and its terms address damage from incompatible third-party components. Roborock’s U.S. page gives a six-month warranty example for qualifying certified refurbished products purchased through listed official channels. Terms vary by country, model and retailer.
3. Dock complexity
Self-emptying reduces daily bin emptying but adds bags, fans and dock electronics. Mop-washing and drying add tanks, pumps, valves, seals, drainage and fans or heaters. These features may be worth the labour saved, but they create more parts to clean and potentially repair.
4. Software dependence
Check whether basic cleaning works without an account or cloud service, how maps and schedules are handled, and whether the manufacturer still supports older models. Do not assume a current app will support a discontinued robot indefinitely.
5. Home compatibility
Check clearance under furniture, threshold height, rug thickness, dark or reflective flooring, stairs, cords and likely wet areas. A robot that repeatedly gets trapped or drags cables experiences more stress than one operating in a prepared space.
Does a higher price mean longer life?
Not necessarily. A premium model may provide better navigation, obstacle avoidance, battery capacity, dock automation, warranty or parts support. It may also contain more pumps, sensors, fans and electronics that can fail. A simple vacuum-only robot can be the better long-term choice if durability and repairability matter more than automation.
Compare total ownership cost rather than sticker price:
Total ownership cost = purchase price + consumables + likely battery replacement + expected repair cost − remaining useful value.

Repair or replace? Use this decision path
- Clean and diagnose: empty the bin, clean the filter, roller, wheels, sensors and charging contacts.
- Replace wear items: fit the correct filter, brush or wheel and retest.
- Test the battery: use a clear area and normal power mode; check for charging or battery errors.
- Use warranty service: especially for a dock, motherboard, lidar or camera failure within coverage.
- Repair when: the fault is a battery, brush, wheel or contact issue; parts are stocked; and the robot otherwise cleans and navigates normally.
- Replace when: the motherboard, lidar, camera system, suction motor or dock has failed; several major systems are failing; parts are unavailable; or repair approaches the cost of a comparable new model with warranty.
Do not mistake a clogged filter or tangled roller for a dead motor. Conversely, a new battery will not restore a robot whose navigation, dock and suction systems are also worn.
Bottom line
Buy on maintainability, not a promised number of years. Expect roughly four to six years, plan for battery decline after about two to four years, and favour models with an official replacement battery, stocked consumables, clear warranty terms and a service route. For premium vacuum-and-mop systems, evaluate the dock as part of the same ownership decision. A well-matched, maintained robot can outlast the average estimate; a complex model with no parts support can become uneconomic much sooner.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a robot vacuum last longer than six years?
Yes. Six years is not a hard endpoint. A lightly used, maintained robot with available batteries, consumables, repairs and software support can remain useful longer.
Is a short runtime proof that the battery is bad?
No. Clean the filter, roller, wheels and charging contacts, check power mode and run a controlled test first. If runtime remains poor, investigate an official battery replacement.
Are vacuum-and-mop robots less durable?
Not automatically, but pumps, tanks, seals, washboards and drying systems add maintenance and failure points. Their convenience should be weighed against that additional complexity.
