A Virginia carpenter’s AirTags helped him trace stolen tools to a Maryland storage facility. Police then searched 12 locations and recovered approximately 15,000 construction tools and equipment, which authorities valued at $3 million to $5 million. The tags led investigators to the first location; police work uncovered the much larger cache.
How the carpenter’s AirTags led police to the first storage facility
The carpenter, a 43-year-old Virginian whose remodeling business employed about 14 people, had already experienced two van break-ins and lost thousands of dollars’ worth of tools. He put AirTags inside some larger tools he still owned. When his van was broken into a third time on January 22, 2024, thieves took some of those tagged tools.
Using his iPhone, he followed the tags’ reported locations through the Washington, D.C., suburbs to a storage facility in Howard County, Maryland. He contacted police rather than going inside or confronting anyone. Investigators obtained a search warrant, and the first location helped them identify other suspected storage sites. Over the following four months, police searched 12 locations, 11 reportedly in Howard County. AppleInsider’s account of the case and Fox Business’s report describe the chronology and searches.

The AirTags did not locate all the recovered property themselves; they gave the carpenter a lead that police pursued through warrants and follow-up investigation.

What police recovered—and why not every owner was known
Authorities reported recovering approximately 15,000 tools and pieces of portable construction equipment, with an estimated value of $3 million to $5 million. That was a police estimate, not an independently audited appraisal. The inventory included saws, drills, sanders, grinders, generators, batteries, air compressors and other equipment. Some items were reportedly connected to thefts dating back to 2014. Police1’s report covers the equipment and theft-date context.
Investigators said the property was believed to have been stolen from contractors, retailers, vehicles, homes and construction sites in Maryland, Virginia, Pennsylvania and nearby areas. At the time of 2024 reporting, about 80 victims had been identified, but authorities warned that many more owners might remain unknown. A large pile of used tools is difficult to return when items lack serial numbers, distinctive marks or records that connect them to a particular owner. Reports from May and June 2024 said the investigation was continuing and no arrests had then been announced. Those reports do not establish the case’s later disposition, so they should not be read as a claim about what happened after that reporting.

An AirTag is not a standalone GPS tracker. It broadcasts a Bluetooth signal; nearby Apple devices can anonymously relay a tag’s approximate location to Apple’s Find My network, where its owner can see a location report in the Find My app. That means updates depend on participating Apple devices passing within range. If none do, the owner may see no fresh location, and a displayed point can be delayed or approximate. Apple describes the system on its AirTag product page and AirTag support page.

This is different from continuous, vehicle-style tracking. The case reports say the carpenter used his iPhone to follow AirTag location reports; they do not establish that he used Precision Finding inside the storage facility. Precision Finding is a short-range feature for locating a nearby tag on compatible iPhone hardware. A map location can point to a building or facility, but it does not identify a person, prove ownership or show which room or storage unit contains an item.
What an AirTag can—and cannot—do for a contractor
An AirTag may be a useful recovery aid for an iPhone-owning tradesperson who wants to conceal a low-cost tag in a selected high-value tool or case. It is less useful when equipment is stored somewhere with few nearby Apple devices, when a thief can quickly find and discard the tag, or when the owner needs live location updates, geofencing or movement alerts. It also does not lock equipment, stop resale or guarantee that police can recover a tool.

AirTags include anti-stalking safeguards: a person may receive an alert if an unknown AirTag appears to be travelling with them, and a tag can emit a sound. Those protections can make a thief more likely to discover a concealed tracker over time. Do not modify or disable safety features to evade alerts. A tracker’s location is a lead for authorities, not permission to search a property yourself.

Make stolen tools easier to identify and recover
For a contractor, the most useful protection is a combination of records, physical security and a safe response plan. Build the inventory before a theft, and store a copy somewhere accessible even if a work van is stolen or damaged.

- Record each tool’s brand, model and serial number; photograph its label and any distinctive wear, initials, engraving or stickers.
- Keep receipts, insurance documents, approximate purchase dates and tool-registration records with the inventory.
- Use lockable job boxes and secure vans inside a locked facility when practical. Remove batteries overnight where that reduces the value of unattended tools.
- Consider concealed trackers for selected high-value equipment, but check them periodically and replace a tag’s battery when needed.
- Keep vehicle and tool-storage keys separate, and use lighting or visible cameras where appropriate.
- If equipment is stolen, file a police report and preserve the report number, tag screenshots and time-stamped location updates. Give the information to law enforcement; do not enter a suspected unit, home or vehicle or confront anyone.
If you believe one of your tools was part of the Howard County recovery, contact the Howard County Police Department through its current official channels and ask about the property-identification process. Be prepared to provide a police report number, serial number, receipt, photographs, identifying marks, and the theft date and location. Do not rely on an old form link unless the department confirms it is current.
Other tracking options for work equipment
The right option depends on the tools you own, the phones your crew uses and whether you need a last-known location or more active fleet tracking.

Electronic tracking works best alongside serial-number records, photographs, locks and insurance documentation. The defining lesson of this case is not that a tag can recover a whole stolen inventory on its own: it is that one usable location lead, combined with careful records and a police-led investigation, can expose a much larger cache.
