A fiber-optic Christmas tree can seem to blink too quickly even when no LEDs are flashing: in this 2013 project, a lamp shone through a rotating multicolor disk, and the disk’s motion changed the colors carried to the branch tips. The builder slowed that disk by varying the AC frequency supplied to its 12-volt synchronous motor. It worked only within limits: below about 30 Hz, this particular motor stalled and reversed.
What makes a fiber-optic tree change color?
In the tree described by Hackaday, the light source and the color-changing mechanism were inside the base. A spotlight shone upward through a translucent multicolor disk. As the disk rotated, different colored areas crossed the beam. A bundle of plastic optical fibers collected the changing light and carried it to points on the branches.
The apparent flashing was therefore mainly a mechanical effect: the color disk moved through the light path. How quickly the colors appeared to change depended on the disk’s rotation and the pattern of colored regions. This explanation applies to that style of tree, not to every decoration sold as a fiber-optic tree; other models may use LEDs, electronic controllers, DC motors, or integrated color modules.

The project’s motor was reported as a 12-volt AC geared synchronous motor. A synchronous motor’s speed is tied to the frequency of its AC supply, provided the motor can maintain synchronism under its load. In simplified terms, for the same motor and pole arrangement, synchronous speed is proportional to supply frequency.

The original project used a 50 Hz signal. That is a fact about this reported setup, not a universal specification: mains frequency varies by region, and the motor and supply arrangement in another tree may differ. As an engineering inference, changing the same motor from 50 Hz to 30 Hz would nominally reduce synchronous speed to about 60% of its original speed. That ratio is not a measured speed result reported for the project.
What circuit did the builder use?
The Hackaday report describes a variable-frequency control using CMOS 4069 inverter logic and transistors arranged as an H-bridge to produce a low-voltage AC drive for the motor. Adjusting the frequency slowed the rotating disk. This is not simply a conventional DC-motor PWM controller: an AC synchronous motor needs an appropriate alternating drive, and ordinary DC-style PWM is not a safe default substitute.

Why the motor would not run reliably below about 30 Hz
In this particular build, the motor became unreliable below approximately 30 Hz, where it could stall and reverse. That is the reported limit for this motor, drive, and mechanical load—not a general minimum operating frequency for synchronous motors.

At low speed, available torque and the motor’s ability to stay synchronized matter. Friction, gear backlash, disk imbalance, and load can all contribute to unstable movement. If the rotor falls out of synchronism, the disk may stop, jerk, or reverse instead of turning smoothly. The usable lower limit depends on the specific motor, gearbox, voltage, waveform, and disk.
How to decide whether this approach fits your tree
Before changing a controller, identify what actually turns the color pattern. The frequency-control idea is relevant only if the tree has a rotating disk driven by an accessible AC synchronous motor. Check the motor and supply documentation rather than inferring motor type from the presence of a transformer or a low-voltage rating.

- Motor type: Determine whether it is AC synchronous, DC, induction, stepper, or unknown. Each requires a different control strategy.
- Electrical ratings: Establish the motor’s voltage and current, and whether its supply is isolated from mains. These determine driver, supply, fuse, and thermal requirements.
- Mechanical access: Check whether the disk, shaft, and motor can be reached without disturbing the fiber bundle or lamp alignment.
- Desired change: Slower rotation, gentler color transitions, lower brightness, and a redesigned lighting effect are different goals and may call for different modifications.
- Reversibility and noise: A removable mechanical change may suit a collectible tree better; added gears or a replacement motor can introduce noise, backlash, or mounting work.
Alternatives to building a variable-frequency AC drive
The original report’s comment discussion includes mechanical and lighting alternatives. These are proposals, not solutions demonstrated or compared in the project.

A generic motor-driver board is not automatically suitable for the original motor. Many boards are intended for DC motors or stepper motors and should not be connected to an AC synchronous motor without confirming compatibility.

Safety checks before opening or testing the base
- Unplug the tree before opening it, and keep exposed wiring away from children and pets.
- Verify the motor supply, transformer output, and isolation; do not assume a low-voltage circuit is isolated from mains.
- Use a properly rated fuse and an enclosed controller. A transistor H-bridge must be designed to avoid shoot-through and excessive heat.
- Test only while observing motor behavior and component temperature. Stop if the motor chatters, stalls, reverses, or overheats; do not leave an unstable motor running unattended.
- Maintain clearance between the lamp and plastic parts. The lamp and its heat are part of the modification’s safety profile.
- Avoid intense, rapid flashing around people with photosensitive epilepsy or known light sensitivity. The project report provides no measured flicker or medical safety assessment.
What the project demonstrates—and what it does not
The project is a useful example of matching a control method to the mechanism: changing AC frequency can slow a synchronous motor, but only while that motor remains stable under its load. The documented result does not establish a universal 30 Hz limit, a fully reproducible circuit, or a safe drop-in modification for other trees. For a specific decoration, identify the motor and its ratings first; a mechanical change or a properly matched replacement motor may be more practical than reconstructing the original H-bridge.
