Houston residents brought 132,293 pounds of unwanted electronics to the ABC13 Earth Day E-Cycle Drive on April 24, 2026, setting a new record for the event. The total exceeded the drive’s previous high of 128,699 pounds from 2014, but it did not surpass the separate 138,174-pound Guinness single-day figure cited for 2014.
What happened at the Houston e-waste drive?
The ABC13 Earth Day E-Cycle Drive took place Friday, April 24, 2026, at CompuCycle, 8019 Kempwood Drive, Houston, Texas 77055. Residents delivered unwanted electronics for collection and processing.
ABC13 reported a final collection weight of 132,293 pounds—about 66.1 U.S. short tons. That is a record for this ABC13 drive, according to the event coverage, not evidence that every pound was already converted into new products.

Which record did residents break?

The distinctions matter. The 2026 total was higher than the earlier ABC13 event record, but it was lower than the cited 138,174-pound Guinness figure. The available reports do not establish that the 2026 total received new Guinness certification, so calling it a world-record collection would be inaccurate.
The event’s 132,293 pounds also describe material collected at the drive. They do not establish how much was reused, refurbished, recovered as raw material or sent for regulated disposal.

- Sorting: Equipment is separated by type and condition.
- Data handling: The event coverage says hard drives would be wiped. It does not state the sanitization standard, verification method or provide a certificate for every device.
- Reuse or refurbishment: Functional devices or components may remain in service after testing or repair.
- Material recycling: Devices can be dismantled so metals, plastics and glass are recovered for manufacturing feedstock.
- Residual handling: Some parts cannot be economically recovered and require appropriate downstream disposal.
“Collected for recycling” is therefore more precise than “all recycled.” The reports do not provide a percentage breakdown or identify every downstream processor. CompuCycle’s statement that recovered materials can be used in new consumer products describes the intended processing route, not a documented result for each item.
Why electronics need a different waste stream
Electronics combine valuable materials with components that can create environmental and safety problems if they are dumped, burned or dismantled improperly. A recycling-event explanation from the Oak Ridge Associated Universities notes that some electronics can contain hazardous substances such as lead and mercury. That does not mean every device contains both substances, but it is one reason ordinary trash is a poor default.
Electronics also contain recoverable metals and plastics. Responsible collection reduces the chance of uncontrolled handling while giving specialized processors an opportunity to recover those resources.

Protect personal data before recycling a device
A recycler’s process is not a substitute for preparing your own phone, computer or storage device. Use this checklist before handing equipment over:
- Back up photos, documents and other files you still need.
- Sign out of cloud accounts and remove the device from account-management services such as activation locks.
- Perform the manufacturer’s factory reset on phones, tablets and computers.
- Remove SIM cards and removable memory cards.
- Ask the operator exactly how storage media are sanitized and whether you can receive written documentation.
- For business, medical, financial, legal or government data, use a service that provides documented sanitization or arrange physical destruction when wiping cannot meet your security requirements.
A factory reset is a sensible household precaution, but it should not automatically be treated as verified media sanitization for highly sensitive information.
Check acceptance rules before taking a large load
The available event reports do not publish a complete accepted-items list, fee schedule, quantity limit or residency rule. Do not assume that every television, battery, appliance, light, cable or hazardous item was accepted under the same conditions.

Before transporting equipment to a future collection, confirm the operator’s current rules—especially for:
- CRT televisions and monitors, which may have separate fees or limits;
- lithium-ion batteries, which can ignite when damaged, crushed or short-circuited;
- swollen, leaking or damaged batteries, which need explicit instructions rather than a normal collection box;
- large appliances and commercial quantities; and
- items containing refrigerants or other regulated materials.
Keep loose batteries from touching one another or metal objects as the local program directs, and never place lithium-ion batteries in ordinary trash or curbside recycling unless the program expressly accepts them.

The one-day Houston event has ended. For a current year-round option, check Houston-area government collection information, the manufacturer’s take-back program, a retailer that accepts the specific item, or a verified electronics recycler. Ask five questions before you go:

- Is my exact item accepted?
- Are there fees, quantity limits or residency restrictions?
- How are hard drives and phones sanitized?
- Where do unusable or hazardous fractions go?
- Can I obtain a receipt or certificate of destruction?
Working equipment may be a better candidate for repair, donation or verified refurbishment than material recycling, provided personal data is removed and the recipient can actually use it. Donating broken equipment simply transfers the disposal problem.
What the record shows—and what it does not
The 132,293-pound result shows that a convenient, clearly organized collection can draw substantial household participation. It does not measure the number of residents or vehicles, identify the mix of computers and televisions, or prove how much material ultimately became a new product. Those details were not reported with the event total.
For households, the practical lesson is straightforward: keep electronics out of ordinary trash unless local authorities explicitly allow them, prepare data-bearing devices before drop-off, and choose a channel that explains both security procedures and downstream handling.
