House Hushing is Myquillyn Smith’s “backwards decluttering” method: clear the small, visible items from one lived-in area, live with the quieter space for 24–48 hours, then return only what you use, need or genuinely love. It is a reversible visual reset—not a promise to cure anxiety or a substitute for handling a garage, attic or severe accumulation.
What House Hushing means
Smith describes House Hushing as “turning down the visual volume of a room fast.” Instead of deciding the fate of every object before you see the room without it, you temporarily remove decorative and everyday items and let the cleared baseline inform your choices. Smith calls this “Backwards Decluttering” because the first step avoids a long series of exhausting keep-or-discard decisions.
The approach fits Smith’s idea of “Cozy Minimalism”: keeping the most style—your style—with the least amount of stuff. The aim is not an empty, impersonal home. It is a space where the remaining objects have room to function and be noticed.

A small zone can be reset in a day. If you clear a whole room, give yourself the full 24–48-hour observation period before deciding what returns.

-
Choose one visible, lived-in zone
Start with a coffee table, entry table, bedside table, shelf, cabinet or small room. Do not begin with a basement, attic or garage when the job is sorting a large volume of possessions; Smith specifically distinguishes those projects from House Hushing.
-
Clear the visual layer
Remove the small decorative and everyday items from the chosen zone. Put them together in a separate holding area rather than making final decisions one object at a time. Leave the surface or room empty enough to read clearly.
-
Clean while it is empty
Vacuum, dust and wipe the exposed surfaces. The cleaning is part of the practical reset: it is easier to see the room’s shape, light and useful space when dirt and objects are not competing for attention.

Live with the quieter baseline
Leave the area alone for a day or two. Notice what you actually miss, reach for or need. A temporarily bare room may look unfamiliar; resist refilling it simply to remove that feeling.
-
Return only earned items
Bring back objects that serve a use, meet a real need or give you genuine pleasure. Items that do not qualify can be donated, recycled, discarded or moved to a more suitable location.
-
Close the holding area
Set a short decision window and complete the outbound actions promptly. The staging area is meant to make decisions reversible, not to become a permanent new pile.
What to put in the holding area
The holding area is for the items you removed from the selected zone, not an invitation to empty the entire house. Use a basket, bin, box or clearly marked floor area that everyone in the household understands. Keep the contents together so you can test the room without losing track of anything.
During the observation period, ask of each item:
- Did I need or use it in this space?
- Did I genuinely miss seeing or having it?
- Does it support how this room functions now?
- Would another room, person or recycling stream be a better destination?
These are decisions after you have experienced the benefit of the cleared space, rather than guesses made in the middle of a crowded surface.

Can House Hushing calm your mind?
It is reasonable to describe the result as feeling calmer or as reducing visual noise. A quieter-looking room can make it easier to focus on the room’s purpose, but no controlled clinical study or authoritative health statistic establishes House Hushing itself as a treatment for anxiety or a mental-health condition. Treat calm as a possible subjective response, not a medical outcome.
The broader quiet-home context is separate from the decluttering method. The Guardian reported that 10–25% of products in each Quiet Mark category are certified as the quietest. It also reported that one in six Britons had moved home for noise reasons, based on 2018 research commissioned by double-glazing company Everest. That company-sponsored figure is not a clinical finding and does not measure House Hushing.
What House Hushing can—and cannot—solve
| Question | House Hushing | What requires another approach |
|---|---|---|
| Scope | Visible clutter in a living room, bedroom, home office or small zone | Large-volume sorting in a basement, attic, garage or severely accumulated home |
| Decision load | Clear first; decide after experiencing the room with less | Category-by-category inventory, estate work or a comprehensive clean-out |
| Reversibility | Removed items stay together temporarily and can return | Permanent disposal, relocation or a long-term storage system |
Fran May told The Washington Post that House Hushing helped her focus first on what she needed in a space and then on what she loved living with. That sequence explains the method’s strength: it refreshes a room and reveals its capacity. It does not, by itself, address unsafe conditions, compulsive accumulation, a family member’s property or the logistics of disposing of a large quantity of material.
House Hushing versus reducing actual household noise
House Hushing concerns visual and functional clutter. It will not quiet traffic, plumbing, appliances, neighbors or building systems. If sound is the problem, investigate the source separately—through maintenance, building improvements or appropriately certified products. Quiet Mark certification, for example, belongs to the product-noise conversation, not to the decluttering reset, and no appliance is required to hush a room.
The book behind the method
Smith develops the approach in House Hushing: The Simple Method to Declutter and Decorate for a More Peaceful Home. Publishers Weekly lists Revell, $29.99, ISBN 978-0-8007-4475-5, and describes four parts: backwards decluttering, quiet decorating, soulful styling and living seasonally. Price and availability can change by retailer and region.
A practical stopping rule
Stop when the selected zone works better with fewer objects. House Hushing is successful when you can see and use the room more easily—not when every possession in the home has been classified. If the holding area grows beyond what you can process promptly, pause the reset and choose a separate, larger decluttering system for the remaining volume.
