HomeRacker lets you build a rack or storage frame to fit your equipment instead of adapting your equipment to a fixed enclosure. Its printable supports, connectors and removable pins suit custom shelves, small homelab setups and workshop storage—but the project does not establish a certified load rating, so heavy or safety-critical equipment belongs on a properly rated commercial rack.

What HomeRacker is—and what it is not

HomeRacker is an open modular system from KellerLab for building custom frames from 3D-printed parts. The core design is free to use, remix and share, with files and documentation available through the HomeRacker GitHub repository; the project also distributes models through MakerWorld. It is useful when a standard enclosure is too large, too small or simply the wrong shape.

Think of it as a configurable printed framework, not a substitute for a certified server cabinet. The project documents rack-like builds and 10-inch equipment models. Its repository description said a 19-inch standard rack was still in development; verify current files and dimensions before designing around that format. A rack-like frame does not by itself guarantee EIA mounting geometry, rack-unit spacing, grounding, cable management, cooling or seismic stability.

How the modular frame fits together

Supports, connectors and lock pins

  • Supports are the structural bars, with lengths selected to set the frame’s spans.
  • Connectors join supports and define the layout. Documented options range from straight extenders to junctions joining as many as six directions. Standard connectors are intended for more load-bearing roles; pull-through connectors allow arrangements such as a 10-inch rack.
  • Lock pins retain the joints without screws or tools during basic frame assembly.

These are design intentions, not a tested capacity rating. The technical specifications list 15 × 15 mm supports, 4 mm lock-pin dimensions, connector walls of about 2 mm and a stated 0.2 mm interior tolerance to accommodate print and material variation. Those dimensions do not establish how much weight a finished assembly can safely carry.

Build dimensions in 15 mm increments

Support lengths use a 15 mm base unit. A three-unit support is 45 mm long. In the repository’s example, two three-unit supports plus a connector that contributes one base unit make a seven-unit span: 7 × 15 mm, or 105 mm. Account for connector contributions when laying out a frame, and check the actual equipment and accessory clearances rather than relying on nominal dimensions alone.

What you can build around the core

The framework can support more than networking gear. Project examples and documented accessories include Raspberry Pi mounts, 10-inch rack components, rack ears, faceplates, airflow panels, Gridfinity shelves and drawers, under-desk drawers, CD shelves and filament racks. Custom adapters can connect unusual hardware to the frame. Treat each add-on as its own design: accessory print requirements and licenses may differ from those of the core parts.

For a small build, a frame might hold a few lightweight boards or a network switch. A wider layout could organize bins or workshop supplies; a deeper one could make a filament rack. These are examples of possible uses, not recommendations for particular loads. Measure device width, height, depth, mounting points, plug clearance and cable bend radius before printing a complete set of parts.

From files to an assembled frame

  1. Define the job. Measure the equipment and decide the frame’s width, height and depth. Note the intended load, where the rack will sit, access needs and ventilation.
  2. Select or customize the model. Start with HomeRacker Core files or the project’s parametric models in the GitHub repository. Confirm the model dimensions and license for every accessory you plan to use.
  3. Choose the required parts. Work out the support lengths, junctions, extenders and lock pins needed for the geometry. Include any shelves, panels, feet or mounts as separate parts in the plan.
  4. Print a small fit sample first. Check support dimensions, connector holes and pin fit before committing to a full frame. Core parts are designed to print without supports, but that does not necessarily apply to every accessory.
  5. Inspect each part. Look for warping, cracks, incomplete layers, blocked holes and poor dimensional fit. Do not install a part that is visibly damaged or does not engage correctly.
  6. Assemble by hand and add accessories. Basic frame assembly is designed to require no tools. Installing fans, shelves, equipment or wall restraints may need tools and separate hardware.
  7. Introduce load gradually. Add equipment in stages and watch for connector movement, pin migration or shelf deflection before leaving a loaded frame in service.

If a lock pin is stuck, the project documentation recommends pushing it out from the opposite side with another pin; a dedicated Pinpusher tool is also documented for removing multiple pins. Avoid hammering a tight pin in or out aggressively, since that can damage the connector.

Printing choices affect fit and performance

Hackaday’s November 27, 2025 feature on HomeRacker notes that the parts are printed at an angle, a strategy intended to improve strength while avoiding supports. Angled layer lines can also make the surface finish less conspicuous. That rationale is not proof that an angled print is stronger in every direction: the result depends on how the applied load meets the layers and on the quality of the print.

HomeRacker does not specify a universal filament or load table. PLA, PETG, ABS/ASA and reinforced filaments involve different trade-offs in printability, toughness, heat tolerance and long-term behavior. Select a material for the actual environment, then test it; do not assume a material label alone makes a frame suitable for sustained load or elevated temperatures.

  • Use consistent, calibrated printing conditions, particularly when changing filament. The project recommends calibrating material flow.
  • For poor bed adhesion, the project’s printing tips suggest adding a brim and keeping the bed clean. First-layer calibration and material-appropriate warping control also matter.
  • Check that pins fit without excessive force and remain seated. Loose fit can point to dimensional calibration or extrusion-flow issues; an overly tight fit can result from dimensional overgrowth or elephant’s foot.
  • For a joint carrying meaningful load, print and inspect a sample before building the rack. Wall count, infill, temperature, cooling, layer adhesion, orientation and defects all affect the result.

Plan for load, heat, electricity and stability

Weight and long-term loading

The official documentation gives no universal safe working load. Printed parts can deform or creep under sustained weight, particularly in warm conditions. Do not assume an untested frame is appropriate for heavy servers, UPS units, batteries, power supplies or dense disk arrays.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Test a sample joint under a cautious, representative load before committing valuable equipment.
  • Increase weight incrementally. Inspect the frame after several hours and again after days for deflection, cracks, joint movement or pins backing out.
  • Spread shelf loads across multiple supports, shorten unsupported spans and add intermediate supports where needed. A non-printed shelf insert may be more appropriate than a long printed span.
  • Keep heavy items low. Avoid cantilevering heavy equipment from one printed faceplate.

Heat and airflow

Do not enclose hot equipment without a cooling plan. HomeRacker documents airflow panels with openings for common 80, 92 and 120 mm fans, but a fan opening alone does not show that a particular build will cool its equipment adequately. Plan intake and exhaust paths, orient fans appropriately and keep vents clear. Keep heat-sensitive plastic away from hot components and account for the selected filament’s heat behavior.

Electrical and tipping hazards

A printed rack is not an electrical enclosure. Provide strain relief for power leads, keep clearance from mains wiring and avoid exposed power strips. Where equipment requires grounding, ground its metal components independently; the printed frame does not provide grounding. Consider fire behavior when choosing materials and locating a build.

Tall, narrow frames can tip, especially when lightly loaded or when equipment is pulled forward. Design a broad base, use suitable feet, keep the center of gravity low and anchor tall assemblies to a wall with appropriate hardware. Treat anti-tip restraint as part of the design, not an afterthought.

When HomeRacker makes sense—and when it does not

Option Best fit Main trade-off
HomeRacker Custom dimensions, lightweight-to-moderately loaded maker projects, unusual adapters and modular workshop or homelab layouts. Capacity and durability depend on design, material and print quality; a build needs testing and may take substantial printing time and filament.
Commercial metal rack Heavy, expensive or hot equipment; formal mounting requirements; or settings where grounding, predictable behavior or rated capacity matters. Less freedom for unusual geometry, and it may mean buying a larger enclosure than a small setup needs.
Ordinary shelving or furniture Lightweight storage when a custom rack interface is unnecessary. May not integrate equipment mounts or modular printed accessories, but can be faster and more durable for simple storage.
Gridfinity-only storage Bins, tools and small workshop components that do not need a larger structural frame. Does not supply HomeRacker’s larger support framework for combining storage with equipment mounts.
RackStack Another modular 3D-printable mini-rack to compare for small homelabs. Its dimensions and compatibility are not established as interchangeable with HomeRacker; check the RackStack repository.

The printer changes the cost calculation. If you already own a suitable FDM printer, a custom part may use material you have on hand. For a one-off shelf, the time and filament for a large build, failed prints, electricity, printer wear, fans, shelves and mounting hardware can outweigh the benefit; a used metal rack or ordinary shelf may be the simpler choice.
