Yes—but the right answer depends on the Sonoff model and what you mean by “without a bridge.” A factory Matter Sonoff can pair directly with Apple Home, while some older ESP8266- or ESP32-based Sonoff devices can run HAA (Home Accessory Architect), third-party firmware that presents the device as a native HomeKit accessory.
Tasmota alone is not usually the bridge-free solution: it generally needs Homebridge, Home Assistant, MQTT, or another intermediary. Also, avoiding a translation bridge does not always mean avoiding an Apple Home hub. A HomePod or Apple TV may still be required for remote access and hub-based automations.
What “without a bridge” means
There are three separate requirements that are often confused:

- No Homebridge software: the Sonoff itself speaks HomeKit or Matter, so no Raspberry Pi, NAS, Mac, MQTT broker, or Home Assistant server is needed.
- No Matter Bridge hardware: a Matter Sonoff pairs directly with Apple Home instead of relying on an iHost, NSPanel Pro, ZBBridge-U, or similar gateway.
- No Apple Home hub: this is different. Remote access, household sharing, and many automations may still require a HomePod or Apple TV.
In short, “bridge-free” can mean direct device integration, but it does not necessarily mean “hub-free.” SONOFF describes these requirements separately in its Apple Home and Matter documentation.

The best choice for a new installation: factory Matter
If you are buying a Sonoff today, a product explicitly sold with Matter support is normally the safest and simplest route. SONOFF’s current Apple Home guide identifies the MINI-RBS, MINI-D, MINIR4M, and M5 Matter among its Matter-capable products. Confirm the product page and packaging before buying because model lists and firmware requirements can change.
A factory Matter device does not require unofficial firmware replacement. It normally retains manufacturer-supported hardware behavior, can be shared with other Matter ecosystems through multi-admin commissioning, and avoids the recovery risks associated with flashing.
Pairing a Matter Sonoff with Apple Home
- Update the Sonoff firmware and the relevant eWeLink app components.
- Put the device into Matter pairing mode.
- Make sure the phone and device are using the required network. SONOFF’s documented process specifies 2.4-GHz Wi-Fi and iOS/iPadOS 16.3 or later.
- Open Apple Home and tap +, then Add or Scan Accessory.
- Scan the Matter QR code or enter the numeric setup code.
- Assign a room and name, then test local control.
- Add or configure a HomePod or Apple TV if you need remote access and normal hub-based automations.
Matter may expose fewer functions in Apple Home than the original eWeLink app. Check the exact product’s supported device type before assuming that energy monitoring, RF features, scenes, or every multi-channel function will be available.
The clearest firmware option for older compatible Sonoff devices: HAA
HAA is third-party firmware designed to provide native HomeKit support on compatible ESP8266 and ESP32 hardware, including some Sonoff devices. It is the strongest current candidate when the strict requirement is no Homebridge, no MQTT server, and no separate Matter Bridge.
HAA is not the same as Tasmota:
- HAA makes the device behave as a HomeKit accessory.
- Tasmota is primarily local MQTT/HTTP automation firmware. It normally needs an integration layer before Apple Home can control it.
HAA can repurpose older hardware that has no factory HomeKit or Matter support, but it requires replacing the original firmware. You may lose eWeLink cloud features, factory scenes, energy-monitoring behavior, RF functions, or other manufacturer-specific capabilities. A modified device may also lose warranty or manufacturer support.
Do not assume every Sonoff is compatible
“Sonoff” is a product family, not a single hardware platform. Before attempting HAA, verify all of the following:

- Exact model name and hardware revision.
- Processor family: ESP8266, ESP8285, ESP32, or another microcontroller.
- Flash size.
- Relay, button, LED, sensor, and power-meter GPIO assignments.
- Whether the exact board configuration is documented by HAA.
- Whether the required HAA image supports that chip and flash size.
- Whether a known recovery method exists.
The HAA installation documentation specifies different image and flash requirements for ESP8266 and ESP32 families. Chip compatibility alone is not enough: a different board revision can use different pin mappings or bootloader behavior.

Zigbee Sonoff devices cannot become Wi-Fi HomeKit accessories merely by flashing Wi-Fi firmware. Devices using unsupported microcontrollers, proprietary firmware, insufficient flash, or undocumented hardware should not be treated as HAA candidates.
HAA installation: use a model-specific plan
There is no safe universal Sonoff flashing command. The correct image, flash mode, offset, baud rate, crystal frequency, and reset procedure depend on the hardware.
Before opening or flashing the device
- Record the exact model, revision, and existing firmware version.
- Photograph the board and identify the connector or test pads.
- Download HAA firmware and configuration information only from the official project resources.
- Confirm the chip and flash identifiers.
- Save the factory firmware only if a genuine model-specific recovery path exists. Do not assume that every OTA method creates a backup.
- Disconnect the device completely from mains power before opening it.
- Use a correctly wired USB-to-serial adapter with 3.3-V logic for serial work.
- Plan what the relay will do after reboot and power restoration.
Many Sonoff products switch mains voltage. Do not connect an opened mains device to household power while attaching a serial adapter or flashing firmware. Use an appropriate isolated, low-voltage programming arrangement and have permanent electrical work completed by a qualified electrician where required.
Serial flashing
Serial flashing is generally the most dependable route when the device is unsupported by OTA or needs recovery. The usual process involves connecting the correct TX, RX, GND, and power pins, placing the board in bootloader mode, and writing the model-appropriate image. Pin locations differ by model and revision, so do not copy a pinout from another Sonoff.
For identification, commands such as these may be useful, but they are illustrative rather than universal:

esptool.py chip_id
esptool.py flash_idA full erase is destructive and should only be performed when the correct recovery image and procedure are known:

Sonoff DIY OTA
Some older models support Sonoff DIY OTA. The Tasmota documentation identifies the Basic R3, RF R3, and Mini as official DIY-compatible devices, while warning that support depends on the model and stock firmware version.
DIY OTA can be convenient, but it is not universal and may be irreversible. Tasmota warns that this process does not create a factory-firmware backup and may prevent returning to the original firmware. Verify the exact model, stock firmware behavior, current firmware URL, checksum, and size limit from the live documentation rather than copying an old command.
Converting an existing Tasmota device
HAA’s installation documentation describes a tasmota2haa.bin.gz route for some ESP8266 devices and separate boot/application procedures for certain ESP32 hardware. The image must match the chip and flash layout. A device being able to run Tasmota does not automatically prove that it can run HAA.

After HAA boots
The expected sequence is generally:
- Power the device safely in an isolated, non-mains setup.
- Connect to the temporary HAA setup network if one appears.
- Configure Wi-Fi.
- Open HAA Setup Mode.
- Apply the appropriate device configuration or MEPLHAA script.
- Reboot and confirm that the relay, button, LED, and any sensors behave correctly.
- Add the accessory to Apple Home using its current HomeKit setup code.
- Test local control, automations, Siri commands, and behavior after a router or power restart.
HAA’s documentation describes Setup Mode for configuration and OTA updates. The setup code and pairing behavior depend on the release and configuration; do not rely on an old default code from an outdated tutorial.
Add HAA to Apple Home
- Open the Apple Home app.
- Tap + and choose Add Accessory.
- Scan the HAA HomeKit code or enter it manually.
- Assign the accessory to a room and choose a clear name.
- Operate the physical button and relay.
- Confirm the relay’s power-loss and startup behavior before using it in an important automation.
Whether remote control works depends on your Apple Home setup. A direct HomeKit accessory can still require a HomePod or Apple TV for remote access and hub-based features.
HAA, Matter, Tasmota, or a bridge?

When a bridge is unavoidable
A bridge is usually the practical answer when the device is Zigbee, uses unsupported hardware, or must retain factory firmware. SONOFF identifies eWeLink CUBE, NSPanel Pro, iHost, and ZBBridge-U as bridge approaches for non-Matter products.
Homebridge is another option for Tasmota, MQTT, eWeLink, and other integrations. It is free and open source, but it normally requires an always-on computer or server. Homebridge also notes that its community Matter implementation is not CSA-certified and may display an “uncertified accessory” warning.
For a single unsupported Sonoff, buying a factory Matter replacement is often less work than adding and maintaining a bridge. For many legacy devices, a bridge can be more economical and reversible than reflashing each unit.

The device does not enter pairing mode
- Confirm the reset timing and exact hardware revision.
- Power-cycle it safely.
- Check whether the firmware actually booted.
- Read the chip and flash identifiers over serial.
- Reflash only with the correct image and bootloader settings.
- Erase the flash only when a recovery path is confirmed.
Apple Home cannot find it
- Make sure it is not already paired to another Home.
- Put it back into pairing mode and verify the current code.
- Keep the phone and accessory on the same local network during commissioning.
- Disable guest or client isolation.
- Check VLAN multicast and mDNS handling.
- Reset stale failed pairings and restart the Home app or phone.
- For Matter, confirm that firmware and the product’s Matter status are current.
For bridge-based Matter installations, same-subnet discovery, mDNS, and IPv6 can also matter. Homebridge documents these network requirements in its project documentation.

The device appears but the relay does not work
This commonly indicates an incorrect GPIO map, active-low relay logic, a wrong button definition, an incorrect device type, or a configuration that does not match the board revision. Recheck the HAA configuration rather than repeatedly changing Home settings.
Local control works but remote control fails
This is often a missing Apple Home hub rather than a firmware fault. SONOFF states that remote control requires a HomePod or Apple TV configured as a Home hub.
Tasmota works locally but does not appear in Apple Home
Tasmota’s web interface and MQTT operation do not make it a HomeKit accessory. Use Homebridge, Home Assistant, a suitable Matter bridge, or convert the hardware to HAA if the exact model supports it.
Apple Home reports an uncertified accessory
For a factory Matter product, verify that the device is genuinely sold as Matter and has current firmware. For Homebridge’s community Matter support, the warning may reflect the implementation’s lack of CSA certification rather than a defect in the Sonoff hardware.
Safety and recovery checklist
- Never flash an opened mains-powered device while it is connected to household voltage.
- Use 3.3-V serial logic and verify TX/RX/GND before powering the board.
- Assume an incorrect image can make the device unresponsive.
- Do not assume DIY OTA preserved the factory firmware.
- Test startup state, button behavior, and power-loss recovery.
- Do not use modified firmware in safety-critical equipment without fail-safe testing.
- Have a model-specific recovery plan before erasing or flashing.
Bottom line
For a new installation, buy a Sonoff explicitly marketed with Matter and pair it directly with Apple Home. For an existing device, use HAA only after confirming the exact model, chip, flash size, pinout, configuration, and recovery method. Choose Tasmota plus Homebridge or another integration when advanced local automation matters more than avoiding a bridge. If the device is Zigbee or unsupported, a Matter Bridge is usually safer than an experimental flash.
